A thought on Work-Life Balance Article by: Sonia Blacker

Work-life balance; a topic we all consider, reflect upon and strive for (a lot!). Some think there needs to be a separation of work life and personal life in equal portions. Contesting one against the other to achieve their definition of what this is.

You decide to take the opportunity and rearrange your work. You are getting married and need to do a menu tasting at the restaurant you have chosen. The only availability is next Tuesday afternoon.

Others say it’s a myth. Jack Welch, former CEO of GE is one example, “There's no such thing as work-life balance, there are work-life choices, and you make them, and they have consequences.” More still, believe that work-life balance is not an achievement but a cycle.

That’s life!

Life is filled with making decisions about work activities and professional development goals, family responsibilities, social activities, and ‘me’ time, all competing against each other.

That’s life!

“I am so busy with work, there is so much to do” “I’ve been working long hours for a long time” “I don’t get time to do the things I want to do”

We prioritise the things that are important to us at the time. We make a choice about what we will spend our time doing.

Sound familiar? It’s a choice …. I think it’s a mindset, and I think it can be achieved.

If you feel that you are not achieving work-life balance.

Work-life balance is an attitude and it’s about priorities. So, you are sitting at your desk writing an article for the newsletter and the power goes off. That’s life! You decide to deal with the power outage rather than continuing with work. You have been wanting to take painting classes for ever, and you see a great discounted deal on a five-course that is being held from 4-5pm on a Wednesday. That’s life!

Give it a go!on | P&C newsletter A thought Work-life balance | P&C newsletter

You decide to take the time as annual leave to attend. You work part time and normally have Monday off but are asked to work one Monday to get a report completed by its deadline.

You do work on the Monday and take the Tuesday off instead.

Consider, what are you willing to sacrifice and how long for? How can you adjust your priorities to feel more balanced? reflect on what aspects of work and life that could change to better align with your priorities. How much time do you want to spend doing hobbies, study, social activities? keep in mind, it needs to be a conscious process and it takes time to action and make the shift. Set boundaries and stick to them, speak up and communicate how you are feeling. This is a continuous cycle, not one achievement alone.

Lockdown Trouble Shooting Guide We have thought of some problems that we may all face and have suggested a strategy If you can’t stand staring at the screen anymore:

If you miss being with people:

At some point in the day, get up and move. If you can go outside, walk, run, bike ride, trampoline. If you have tighter restrictions, walk around the house, short exercise, like star jumps can help.

Work beside someone else where possible – a sibling or parent or partner, even a furry/feathery family member. Spending the whole time by yourself isn’t great for many of us. You don’t have to talk, even sitting next to someone else (at the dining table, kitchen bench, study) can make you feel better. If you are unable to see someone in person, video call them.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with tasks: Make a list of everything that is causing you stress or anxiety at the moment. Be as specific as possible. a) Go through the list and identify things you can’t control and cross them out or put a massive LATER next to them. E.g., “Ending lockdown” is largely out of your control. b) Number the remaining items in terms of priority/importance.

If you can’t see the end of this, or are feeling things are always going to be the same: Use your phone or get an ‘old school’ paper calendar, or make one and cross off the days as they go. Highlight things you have to look forward to. Where possible, highlight the days when things end.

Work through the list and cross things off as you go. Have it next to you or at your workstation/desk. Lastly, reach out to your manager. If you’re feeling stuck with negative thoughts: Listen to your thoughts and decide which ones are helpful and which aren’t. “This is never going to end” is a thought. It’s not actually true so we acknowledge it, thank our brain for it, say it’s not helpful and move on. NOTE: This is only one strategy – talk to someone (parent/GP/Exhale People) if this is ongoing.

Health, Safety and Wellbeing 5 Elements of essential wellbeing Article by Jackie Mitri

We want to look after ourselves and our well-being, but have you ever sat down for a second and thought about what wellbeing is and what it means to you. I used to think that wellbeing was mainly centred around physical and mental health, but it is so much more! Wellbeing is not just the absence of disease or illness. It’s a complex combination of a person's physical, mental, emotional, and social health factors. In short, wellbeing could be described as how you feel about yourself and your life. An Australian consumer study into wellbeing showed that: 58% respondents wished they could spend more time on improving their health and wellbeing. 79% of parents with children aged less than 18 years of age wish to spend more time on improving their health and wellbeing. 83% are prepared to pay more money for products or services that enhance their feelings of wellbeing. The 5 essential elements of well-being are: CAREER - How you spend your time daily and give back to work ultimately shapes your life. Those with a high career wellbeing wake up everyday feeling excited and enthusiastic about how they are going to spend their day. They are excited to influence the world in a positive way and are passionate about their work. So, the question to ask yourself, are you passionate about what you do? What does ultimate career wellbeing mean to you? Is it status, money, helping others, getting the results you want in work and projects? PHYSICAL- Having good health and energy to get things done on a daily basis. Exercising regularly, maintaining a balanced and healthy diet, and getting enough sleep will assist you to in having a positive physical well-being. Do you look and feel your best? Do you have enough energy to get through the day? Do you get enough sleep? Are all questions which determine your physical wellbeing. SOCIAL – Our social wellbeing is highly influenced by the people around us, like our friends, co-workers, family, and intimate relationships. Our relationships should elevate and motivate us. Its all about having strong relationships and love in your life. Who do you surround yourself with? Do you have a person or people you can talk to about anything? Do you have that support and love when you need it?

Health, Safety and Wellbeing | P&C newsletter

COMMUNITY – People who thrive in their community life, contribute to their community based on their strengths, likes and passion for the better of the others. Your involvement may be small but can still have a major impact. The efforts of people with a thriving community element of wellbeing are what create communities we cannot imagine living without. Do you feel a sense of connection within your community? FINANCIAL – This is all about managing your economic life. To achieve financial wellbeing, financial security you must understand how to manage and spend your money. The financial element is important. Money does not buy you happiness, but you will be happy when you master your finances and ensure your basic needs are met. Have you mastered your finances? MENTAL- It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life and underpins all other elements. Usually if we are fulfilled in the other elements of our life, our mental wellbeing is fulfilled. HOW DO YOU RATE? Once and a while it is a good idea to sit an reflect where you are at in terms of your overall wellbeing. You can use the following guide as to rate each element of your wellbeing. I feel extremely fulfilled I feel quite fulfilled I feel fairly fulfilled I feel a little bit fulfilled I don’t feel fulfilled. After you assess your own wellbeing have a look at your results. Where do you think you could improve? It could be things such as mastering sleep, focusing on career goals, contributing more to the community etc.. After you have created and mastered your areas of focus come back and rate yourself again and see how you have progressed. Use this as a guide to keep mastering your wellbeing, because everyday you are important and you deserve to be the best version of yourself.

Off the clock: getting to know Paul Brydson In this segment of 'off the clock', we interview Netwealth team members to discover their likes, passions and hobbies outside of work. In this episode, we chatted to Paul Brydson, Netwealth's Senior Developer.

What is your favourite food and why?

Favourite food – I really enjoy Middle Eastern food. There is a restaurant in Sydney Rd called Alaysia’s that I enjoyed going to. Stuffed vine leaves, dips, tabbouleh, sliced lamb. Yummy. If you could go anywhere right now, where would it be and why?

I would love to go to Tasmania and do the 6 day walk on the Overland Track. Earlier this year I did a 3 day section of the Great Ocean Walk past Apollo Bay. What is one thing your colleagues don’t know about you?

In the late 70s I played in a northern suburbs A grade cricket premiership team (Preston Socials) and my brother and I coached our club’s u/14 and u/16 cricket teams to the grand final. Injuries incurred playing cricket in pre-helmet days included having my nose broken, lip split and teeth knocked out by bouncers. I did manage to hit the ball with the bat occasionally. How do you like to unwind after work?

Outside work I like bushwalking, bike riding on rail trails, photography, reading and go camping with family and friends. Name one thing you enjoy at Netwealth

The thing I most enjoy about working at netwealth is working in a team that supports one another to produce useful apps.
