GOING WITH THE FLOW.... When I became a mother over 20 years ago, I knew my priorities were going to change forever. Still committed to my career, I was also wholly devoted to my son, and after less than a year of making the long commute to Toronto, I decided that if the rules of the game weren’t working for me, I’d make my own. I didn’t have to lower my standards, but I would need to adjust them. Today, it’s been over two decades since I started Uxbridge OnLine, 18 years since I founded the Uxbridge Networking Group and five years since I established Abacus Brain Study in Uxbridge. My son – the person who opened my eyes to the importance of quality of life – he has recently graduated from university, and again, my priorities change.

It’s the 25th anniversary of my foray into self-employment, and it has given me occasion to reflect on the challenges and triumphs of being a woman and business owner – and that’s what we are going to address in this issue: Women in business. Of course, at its heart, the UNG is about community. Over the years, hundreds of men and women have found a space and a voice for their small and home-based businesses within the UNG, and I am grateful for every one of them. They’ve given my vision life and purpose. Here’s to another 25 years! Sincerely, Annie Hardock, B.Math Founder & Chairperson Uxbridge & Area Networking Group

MEET THE UXBRIDGE & AREA NETWORKING GROUP What is the Uxbridge & Area Networking Group? We’re small and home-based business owners who meet monthly, building our network of business connections. We exist to: • Share ideas, expertise and experiences • Make introductions to others in the community • Provide cost-effective ways to promote members’ businesses Who are our members? We are Entrepreneurs, business owners and operators, as well as local representatives of larger organizations. Our members include individual sales professionals, business service providers, network marketing organizations and companies who provide consumer services. Most members are from the north Durham area, however we support a larger ‘ecosystem’ with members travelling regularly to our meetings from other communities. When are the meetings? We meet once a month (other than July and August), either for breakfast or lunch (see Page 1 for meeting details). How do I get involved? Join us for your first introductory meeting!

CARPE DIEM FARM: MORE THAN A NAME, IT’S A PROMISE Even without considerations of sex and gender, Julie Belli’s chosen profession was bound to be a challenge. As the owner and tireless operator of Carpe Diem Farm, Julie has her work cut out for her. Luckily, she likes hard work. More than that, she lives for it. Julie’s passion, vision and practical know-how have earned her accolades for her incredible sheep cheese, having sold her products locally and throughout Southern Ontario - and it all comes from the small inspected processing plant on her farm in Uxbridge, Ontario. So far. Her success combined with her enterprising spirit has encouraged her to take her business to the next level, and in August, Carpe Diem’s farm store and cafe opens on 170 fertile acres just outside of Sunderland. But for Julie, it’s not about business. It’s about following her bliss, despite the odds. And the odds were not stacked in her favour. Having grown up in a busy metropolis just outside of Liverpool, Julie wasn’t born with dirt in her bones. Even when she moved to Canada, she worked in and all around Ontario as a project manager. However, as her family began to expand, she and her husband - an electrician by trade - moved further and further out of the city until they found themselves just outside of Uxbridge. And even then, farming wasn’t something she’d actively considered as a career. It was something that just happened, a little like falling in love. Exactly like falling in love, actually. She may not have been born with dirt in her bones, but it was definitely in her heart. One day she was agreeing to take the chicks her son’s class had hatched but didn’t have a home for, and the next she was shoving a couple goats into her husband’s car after impulsively buying them at an auction. “Shortly after I came home with a Black Angus.” she laughs. “It’s a slippery slope.” That was over a decade ago. Today, Julie’s passion is a family affair. Her husband and her children (who are now in their early twenties), help around the farm, and this summer, her nephew - a professional espresso technician from Italy - will be working his java genius at their cafe. The cafe will also feature organic goodies including gelato, juice and kombucha popsicles, as well as paninis wraps, sausage, salads, kefir and of course, their famous sheep cheese - and it’s all made using organic practices, and it’s all sourced directly from the farm. In other words, it’s all good. And it gets better: Carpe Diem’s Sunderland spot will also serve as an incubator farm, allowing aspiring farmers to work their own plot of land to see if it’s sustainable for them. TOWNSHIP OF UXBRIDGE TO HOST BUILDING BUSINESS FORUM Local entrepreneurs and business owners have the opportunity to network with and learn from of north Durham’s leading business people at the 5th annual Building Business Forum. The half day conference is designed to inspire and support entrepreneurship while helping local businesses to make strategic connections and find new business development resources. The goal of the event is to help build a stronger rural economy and healthy business environment throughout North Durham. This year, the event is hosted by Township of Uxbridge at St. Paul’s Church in Leaskdale. It is taking place on Friday October 21st at 8:00 am. The theme of the event is “Growing Beyond Your Borders”. Growing beyond your borders can be different for every business or entrepreneur. It does not necessarily refer to physical borders but rather how to expand a business into new avenues and overcome challenges that may be inhibiting business. “We hope that we can encourage people to start companies or grow their business by listening to local success stories and showcasing successful businesses”, says Nancy Rutherford, Manager, Economic Development at Region of Durham one of the forum coordinators. “We know that when we bring local entrepreneurs and business people together exciting ideas are generated. The connections people make when networking really help support them with their day-to-day business decisions.” The north Durham Building Business Forum is a partnership between the Economic Development Advisory Committees of the Townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge. These committees work with township and Durham Region staff on economic development activities for north Durham. For more information see our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/buildingbusinessforum. For details about the 2016 Building Business Forum event sign up to the Agriculture and Rural Affairs e-newsletter at https://www.investdurham.ca/BusinessResources/BuildingBusinessForum.aspx.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS Women have come a long way since joining the cult of domesticity prevailed as their only career option. The end of WWII saw more women entering the workforce than in any other time in history, and the feminist movement of the 1970’s sparked new legislation that nurtured equal opportunity employment. From the 1990’s to early 2000’s, women gained even more traction in business with the percentage of female entrepreneurs rising steadily, if not dramatically. While there’s still a ways to go before equal opportunity is status quo, today glass ceilings are more brittle, and wage gaps are closing, thanks in no small part to the continuous efforts of women entrepreneurs and business owners. Check out these facts and see the integral role women play in today’s world of business, despite (or perhaps because of) the challenges they have – and still – face. FACTS: Canada is home to 950,000 self-employed women, who make up about one-third of all self-employed people here. Around the world, women are paid less than men, in most countries earning on average 60%-75% of men’s wages (2015). According to Industry Canada, 47% of small to medium sized businesses are entirely or partly owned by women. 51% of Aboriginal-owned small to medium sized businesses are owned partly or wholly by women. When a woman does decide to start a business, she tends to stay in business longer (i.e. their survival rates are higher). Majority female-owned firms were just as likely to seek to finance as majority male-owned firms in 2007 but were less likely to be approved for debt financing than majority male-owned firms. (Facts gathered from Revenue Canada, The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, and the World Bank Gender Data Portal.)

CARPE DIEM FARM: MORE THAN A NAME, IT’S A PROMISE (Cont’d) “There’s a massive disconnect between what we learn in school - what we think farming will be - and what it actually is.” Julie explains. “The incubator farm allows people to see if they can handle an acre for a couple years. It lets them see if they can make a go of it; lets them see if they want to make a go of it - and they can do it for free in exchange for giving back a few hours to us. This way, they can risk a fall without losing everything and giving up.” Those that farm their plots can use Carpe Diem’s farm shop to sell their goods, or they can take it to a farmer’s market. Some might call this venture agricultural philanthropy, but Julie just calls it good sense. The incubator plots will not only nurture a love for the land, but they will also provide newbie farmers with a safe opportunity to test their skills, while simultaneously encouraging sustainable, local, environmentally conscious practices. “I want the farm to be a hub that encourages people to unplug. It’s a place they can come for reprieve, by themselves or with friends or family, to connect with the earth. They can take workshops to grind their own flour, make their own bread, brew their own kombucha and husk their own corn to make popcorn. I want to create a community space where people can enjoy life on its simplest terms.” After 15 years of what Julie calls “semi-sustainable” farming, the growth of Carpe Diem in the last two years is nothing short of impressive. Julie owes it to having a plan. Sort of. “I actually don’t have an exact step-by-step plan of how I intend to get where I want. I just have an ultimate life plan, and I work backwards from that. Anything that doesn’t support that vision, I don’t do. As I go along, I’m constantly adjusting things to bring that life plan into fruition.” In addition to the farm shop, cafe and incubator plots, Carpe Diem will also have a classroom where people can take cooking classes from industry professionals and host events, like art classes, book readings and workshops. Despite being a first generation farmer, and though she’s still a relative novelty in conventional farming - which is still dominated by men - Julie is in fine company among other women and like-minded individuals in smaller-scale organic operations, for whom creating sustainable crops, inclusive communities, and abundant opportunities is business as usual. To learn more about Julie and her farm, visit carpediemcheese.ca or drop in to visit the farm shop and cafe. They are located at the corner of highway 12 and the 10th concession just north of Sunderland, and are open from Friday to Sunday during throughout the summer until October. For the latest news from Carpe Diem, ‘Like’ them on Facebook @carpediemfarm.

We talked to some of the most inspired and most inspiring business women - and business owners - around town about what it means to be a woman in business. Here’s who they are, and here’s what they had to say. Raquel Bruinsma has been helping businesses and individuals acquire skills to save lives. With over 25 years as a frontline emergency responder, Raquel understands how basic knowledge of first aid and CPR can be the difference between life and death. It was her desire to make these life saving skills affordable and accessible that prompted her to become a Canadian Red Cross Training Partner and open Compressions 4 You in June 2015. After Raquel graduated from ICD College in her studies of Police Science and Law Enforcement, she pursued her passion for law enforcement and worked in the private security sectors. Decades of experience making quick, informed decisions on the frontlines has made Raquel an ardent advocate of first response training. It is her belief that with a little training, and a lot of heart, anyone can be a hero. Raquel on advice for women starting their own businesses... “Don’t get discouraged! You envisioned a dream, so let that be your focus and you can accomplish anything. Be respectful to others, and always trust your instincts. Educate yourself and never stop learning and believing in yourself.” Learn more about Compressions 4 You at compressions4you.ca. Linda Woolley is proof that homegrown can mean big business. What started as a homebased business has – over the course of several incarnations – developed into Nortek, a globally recognized business she now co-owns with her son. By combining her extensive background in technology with her ability to not only foresee, but create industry trends, she’s brought the high tech prowess of Nortek people management software to the world market. Of course, her success story seems simplistically streamline on paper, but in reality, it took a lot of hard work, vision and time to build her brand into the force it is today. Since her beginnings as a business owner in 1974 with five employees, she and her vision have grown, adapted and thrived in an ever-changing market. Linda on what inspired her to start her own business... “Rather than feeling my career was stymied by motherhood, becoming a mother is actually what inspired me to get into business for myself. After my second child, I had no desire to return to the limited flexibility of the workforce, but I still wanted to further my career. In the mid-70’s, I joined forces with a group of other women, who ultimately ended up working for me, making us an anomaly in the market: an entire company of all-female programmers, working primarily from our own homes, for large companies, and committed to our career as well as our families.” Today, Nortek employs over a dozen people – both men and women - including graduates mastering their skills in the Uxbridge office, and senior staff who often work from their homes. Learn more about Nortek at www.norteksolutions.com. Dale Hickey is the owner of Ron Noble Insurance in Uxbridge, and is backed by 36 years of certified experience in the insurance arena. She quickly developed a love for the industry at the very first insurance office she worked in, and knew as her career progressed where she ultimately wanted to end up. The purchase of Ron Noble Insurance 15 years ago was the beginning of bringing that goal into fruition. Clear plans, constant effort and an unfailing drive to be among the best in the industry contribute to her incredible success. Continuing to see the business succeed for her loyal customers - old and new - as well as for the 12 staff members she employs is what keeps her motivated and inspired each day. Supporting her community continues to be a top priority.

Dale on her hopes for the future of women in business: “While I have not experienced any career obstacles due to being a woman, I know there are many who do. I would like to see women who are educated and qualified be given equal opportunity and equal compensation for the positions they hold not just in the insurance industry but in other business segments as well.” Learn more about Ron Noble Insurance at ronnobleinsurance.com.
Kathy Normandeau has been helping people make beautiful music for over three decades. Her passion for music began more than 25 years ago when she graduated from George Brown College with a certificate in Piano Technology - and even before she graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Music with a diploma in piano teaching 15 years prior to that. Her love of music was developed and nurtured by her own piano teacher, Alice Cestnick. It’s an enthusiasm she passes on to her own clients, some who have gone on to enjoy music careers of their own. As the first female craftsman with the Ontario Guild of Piano Technicians, Kathy spearheaded her way into a traditionally male-dominated trade. Since then, many more women have decided to pursue a career in piano technology as a means of bettering their understanding of their craft. Kathy on embracing womanhood in business: “The playing field has become a lot more level, and women should never have to pretend they aren’t women. If you’re a woman and you want a family, don’t feel like you have to sacrifice or hide your family for your career. Family and a successful career are not mutually exclusive, as long as you have a great passion for your business to see you through the tough times.” Learn more about Kathy’s services by emailing her at uxbridgeintune@gmail.com.

WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE 2016 marks the Uxbridge Fall Fair’s 152 year, and they’re celebrating by putting the spotlight on women in agriculture. The Canadian agriculture industry employs just over 2 million Canadians, and over one-quarter of the nation’s farmers are female. This means hundreds of thousands of women are working the fields in over 50 million hectors of prime Canadian agriculture land, raising livestock and producing enough food to feed not only the country, but to export to 169 other countries as well. Join the Uxbridge Fall Fair on September 9th, 10th and 11th to support and celebrate women in agriculture as they showcase their industry prowess in live shows, contests and demos.
