CANADA CELEBRATES 150 YEARS - UNG Magazine S2017

Page 1

CELEBRATING CANADA AS A COMMUNITY Having lived in Canada for over 35 years - first as a foreign student, then as an immigrant - Canada is dear to my heart. I grew up in Hong Kong when it was still a British Colony, so I’ve been influenced by eastern and western multiculturalism, as well as by an economy driven by entrepreneurs and small businesses, and founded by many immigrants, including my parents.

P. 4 First Nations - Canada 150 P. 5 Uxbridge 150 Years Ago P. 6 UNG Membership Listing P. 10 Canadian Music Identity at Confederation P. 12 Canada 150: Uxbridge Sings

In 1980, when I had the opportunity to go abroad to pursue higher education, I decided on Canada. Their world acclaimed peacekeeping missions, diversity, and quality of education made it my uncontested country of choice. By 1989, I was a proud Canadian citizen. As Canada celebrates 150 years of Confederation, we dedicate this issue of our magazine to showcasing Uxbridge’s anticipated events and activities. Festivities like the Rotary Club’s Big Band Dinner and Dance, The Great Canadian Uxperience, a euphony of performances by Uxbridge’s award winning choirs, the annual Canada Day party in Elgin Park – which features the first ever parade – as well as the Canada-themed Uxbridge Fall Fair will make our town a hub of activity for residents and visitors. In addition to these events, initiatives like the Active 150 and tree planting challenge serve to enrich our planet and bodies, and the Scugog Island Pow Wow reminds us that there were people who called this land their home for thousands of years before Confederation. Take the time to celebrate living in this exceptional country with our remarkable community. Sincerely, Annie Hardock, B.Math Founder & Chairperson Uxbridge & Area Networking Group

FIRST NATIONS - CANADA 150 Celebrate the Nation, Honour Its People While Canada is celebrating its 150th year as a country, it’s important to remember that Confederation did not suddenly make this land a home. For the First Nations people, it had been home for millennia. The lands that make up today’s Durham Region have been occupied by various indigenous communities throughout time, including the Ojibway Nation - one the the largest native populations in Canada. A little history… The Mississauga - a branch of the Ojibwa Nation - moved to this area from north Lake Huron in the beginning of the 18th century. They settled in and around Lake Scugog, where rich soil and bountiful resources accommodated their way of life. However, this peaceful period was short-lived. Initially, the Mississauga and Anishinabeg had come south during the conflict with the Five Nations. The Anishinabeg populated all of southern Ontario. The Mississauga became associated with the entire Lake Ontario frontier. Over the course of the next two hundred years, a treaty process took up their land. The people themselves would be forced to abandon their homes and move onto reserves. Game population dwindled, and by the mid-1800s, there was relatively little left of the natural resources that had unfailingly sustained the Mississaugas for over a century. But they overcame, and continue to overcome. Despite facing the same devastating obstacles as many other First Nations groups in Canada, the Mississaugas are reinvigorating their community and revitalizing their culture. Elder teachings are held in the community to nurture their language, and in 1997, they spearheaded development of the Great Blue Heron Casino to help nurture opportunity and advancement. Today, Durham Region enjoys a warm relationship with this remarkable community based on trust, and mutual respect. Acknowledge, Honour, Celebrate To honour and celebrate Canada’s first residents, add the annual Scugog Island Pow Wow to your list of 150th celebrations. This event attracts an international audience and is held every year on the third weekend in July. (That’s the 15th and 16th, this year.) Thanks to the Scugog Island First Nations for their help with this article. To learn more about the Pow Wow and the Scugog Island First Nations, visit www.scugogfirstnation.com.

UXBRIDGE 150 YEARS AGO Today, Uxbridge is a booming town, with many thriving businesses and a very tight knit community. But, what was Uxbridge like 150 years ago? What was around? In 1867, Uxbridge wasn’t even called Uxbridge; it was known as Wixan’s Bridge, and it was incorporated as a municipality in 1850. When looking at early records, the first public building in the community was the Quaker Meeting House, built in 1820. It was the original networking hub within the area and was used as a place for locals to meet and socialize. When 1867 came along much had changed, however, Uxbridge still remained a fairly small town. Commercial buildings consisted of 12 Main St. North, which was built by the merchant in 1862. Along Brock St. W., where there are currently many businesses, there was only a grocery and a dry goods business located at 80-82 Brock St.W., and Low’s Furniture, which dates back to 1850, and still remains a vibrant family-owned business that’s now been part of the community for over 150 years. As far as churches go, Trinity United Church was the only church within the township and the congregation was founded in 1858. While we think of the Uxbridge Library as a historical centerpiece of the town, it was not built until 1887. The Hobby Horse Arms Pub as we know it today was previously a Hotel, built in 1868, and was originally located around the corner on Brock St. E near First Avenue. This structure had a long history as a hotel and later a livery stable and home in that location. In 1981, it was purchased and moved to its present site to avoid demolition. One notable home business that was part of Uxbridge in the early years was Benjamin Davidson’s beekeeping. His home was built in 1869 and for many years beehive boxes could be seen on his property. With so many changes through the years, networking has remained a key part of a successful business in Uxbridge, and around the world. So how do you want to be remembered in 150 years? This article is a creative collaboration by Sari Pandopulos of Trailblazer Creative/Uxbridge App & Kevin M. Brown (USS Co-op Student).

CANADIAN MUSIC IDENTITY AT CONFEDERATION by Kathy Normandeau I became curious about a national identity in music at the time of Confederation and found that indeed music reflecting our diverse settlers’ experiences abounded. The need to embrace the Canadian landscape required musical expression through songs, fiddle tunes and was recorded on sheet music, piano music and orchestra. Thanks to the Library and Archives of Canada (www.collectionscanada.gc.ca) I found many pieces written in 1867. In the year of Confederation the popular Maple Leaf Forever was written by Alexander Muir as well as This Canada of Ours by JD Edgar and EH Ridout. The Canadian Boat Song was also written in 1867 by Thomas More about rowing cheerfully up the St. Lawrence river as was the Civil Service Galop by R.H.Brown in honour of the work “our wonderful civil service was doing.” There were longer musical pieces written specifically to engage points of view such as the comic opera Converting a Nova Scotia Fisherman by Jean Baptiste and Elzear La Belle, Much of the music was written for performance at the piano. Piano Manufacture was a top employer in the original four provinces of Canada from 1832 to 1914. The Uxbridge Cabinet Company, later known as the Uxbridge Piano and Organ Co., was very busy during that time and began building some of the prettiest reed organs available. The tradition of music in Uxbridge was well established by 1867 and the Ontario Hall had been built by then as a meeting place for musical entertainment. The Uxbridge Music Hall now stands at this location. Yes, Canadians wrote music about their countryside, their people, and their opinions.

CANADA 150: UXBRIDGE SINGS! With an impressive spread of award-winning choirs to its name, it’s no wonder Uxbridge’s Canada Day Celebrations will feature music. There’s never been a more patriotic time to see our local talent perform. The sweet-sounding celebrations kick off on April 29th with the One Voice Singers, who will showcase Canadian songs in their performance, Oh Canada! Still Strong, Still Free. Music Director, Charles White, looks forward to the event, saying that while he always likes to include some Canadian repertoire in each of the choir’s concerts, “it is a particular pleasure to plan an entire show featuring Canadian themes by Canadian composers and arrangers.” The choir’s set-list hones in on our country’s beginnings. “Two modes of transportation were very important in the early development and settlement of Canada – water and rail.” White says. “All The Little Rivers by Larry Nickel speaks of the importance of transportation by water, and Canadian Pacific by Ray Griff, emphasis the significance of travel by rail.” Actor Kenneth Welsh will be joining the Monday Morning Singers as they pay homage to Canada’s First Nations. Their set list includes, Snowforms, by R. Murray Schafer, which is sung using Inuit words for snow, and Watane (Iroquois Soundscape), by Mark Sirett. Other special guests include Inuit artist, drummer and throat singer, Louisa Gillespie, as well as Edward Tait (double bass), Harcus Hennigar (French horn), Joan Andrews (flute), and Dan Simmons, (percussion). The Uxbridge Chamber Choir’s 150 Years of Canadian Music will give their audience a harmonious tour through the decades, featuring the loon-song melody, Keewadin by Harry Freedman, as well as music from the inspired and influential Canadian composer, Harry Somers.

Linda Morrison, Music Director of the Pineridge Chorus speaks to the enthusiasm felt by music-lovers about these musical tributes. “Preparing for - and singing at - these events will allow us to demonstrate how much we enjoy singing, especially about our wonderful country.” Their set list includes a highly-anticipated four-part harmony version of O Canada, which you can hear on two separate occasions: first at the Foster Memorial and then again at their Canada 150 Tea. The passion and dedication of these choirs shows that music isn’t just an interlude to Uxbridge’s celebrations, but a driving force behind them.
