LAW OFFICE OF EDWARD W. NEUFVILLE III
A LETTER FROM ATTORNEY NEUFVILLE Reflections on 20 years of serving you~
The past few years have been difficult. There is no way around this statement and point of reflection. Since 2019, the COVID pandemic has had a terrible grip on the entire world. The pandemic has affected our communities, families, institutions, and all facets of life. As we rise out of this period, while COVID remains with us, we give thanks for being able to come out of it and, at the same time, mourn so many that we lost during this period. I invite you to reflect on these years, mourn them, and then let us move forward and prepare for this new life and world we have been presented with.
With that….It has been 20 years since I opened my Immigration law practice in Maryland. First, I want to thank God, who, through his mercies, have allowed this to happen for me. Secondly, to you, my faithful and dedicated clients who have kept your faith in my team and me. Finally, I would like to thank my family, immediate and extended, who have supported me along this entrepreneurial journey~ Merci.
In 1990, at the height of the Liberian civil war, I was sent out of the country with my two sisters to the United States, leaving our parents and home behind in search of a safe home and country. We arrived at JFK airport in the Winter with no coats and no luggage, having secured passage through generous donations from abroad. I don’t have to get into too many details because many of you have experienced this to varying degrees and with minor twists on ports of arrival. Simply put, we were looking for a safe and secure place to live, work, learn, and, at my age, play. The desire to live a life of purpose, free from harm, propelled my parents to allow their 3 minor children to board a plane and travel to the United States for a better life. The road was not easy; getting out of Liberia was not going to the airport, it was closed, the visas were not easy to get, we were denied several times, and the passage was not easy to secure….the list goes on and on. It was hard, it was challenging…it is a similar story for you and your loved ones.

Through the support of many people, whom I cannot begin to name, but who have invested in who I am today, I am here serving as your Attorney and Counselor. Through the United States immigration process, I have attended two of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the United States, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and Washington and Lee Law School. I have run track at the highest levels, from high school, Sumter High, South Carolina, to being inducted into the Hall of Fame at UNC Chapel Hill to representing the country of my heritage Liberia at the 1996 Olympics. As an immigrant to the United States, I was able to open my own law practice when I was told that as a person who stutters, I would not be able to practice law and could not get a good placement in a law firm. The immigration process has allowed me to be honored by my peers as a Super Lawyer for 18 years running, I have served on several legal committees on my State of Maryland Bar Association and the AILA committees. The law firm has been featured in several notable news publications, the Washington Post and the New York Times, and featured on Nightline News, talking about Stuttering. His journey to the United States was nothing short of a miracle with only one goal on his mind - asylum. Our client was referred to the Law Office of Edward W. INTERVIEW WITH
MICHAEL KRASUSKI University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law - May 2024 History Major Davidson College -BA
How did you learn about Neufvillelaw? Through a Symplicity listing of the internship.
What made you want to work for this firm as a Summer Intern? I decided that I wanted to be an immigration attorney after a year of participating in the immigration clinic at my law school. I wanted a small firm in particular because of the accessibility to direct mentorship from the attorney and hands-on case work.
What made you want to work for this firm as a Legal Clerk? As a Legal Clerk for the school term I wanted to work part-time during the school year to continue building practical experience in the field and expand the range of work products and soft skills for working in the office and interacting with clients.
What skills did you come in wanting to learn at the law firm? Practice with immigration legal work products, especially brief writing and application preparation. Understanding the interaction between agencies, such as USCIS, ICE, DHS, and CBP.
What have you learned that you had not anticipated would be part of the internship and clerkship? I have learned about the business of running a law firm. I.e., what client-related obligations are the most time consuming, what is a reasonable fee to charge. I also through experience have learned which issues are urgent to bring to the attorney’s attention and which issues can be handled by the law clerk alone.

What do you like about working in the Washington DC area?
Anything else you would like to add?
Proximity to culture, excellent international cuisine, and
the firm.
11
I look forward to a productive spring semester with
an extensive network of attorneys in the immigration field. I also appreciate how kind the attorneys are to one another in the immigration space. There is no adversarial competition that is seen with lawyers in other fields.
What have you contributed to the firm over this period? Completed numerous immigration applications for an attorney, such as naturalization, work permits, waivers, change of address, and green card applications. Completed client filings for court in cancellation of removal and asylum cases. Completed motions that have been filed in court. Calling and emailing clients with pertinent case information. Sending letter requests to agencies pertinent to clients’ cases, such as USCIS, ICE, and DHS. Identifying potential areas where the firm could improve its efficiency, workflow, and client relations.
What are your next steps? I plan to continue in the immigration field and am open to working in any geographic location; however, the Washington, DC, area is my preference. I am open to working in the private, government, or nonprofit sectors to continue building experience.
What advice would you give to new interns/clerks/fellows? Law clerk/fellows: Be prepared for a fast-paced environment with a lot of moving parts. Be prepared to do different types of work, from administrative tasks like scanning, answering phones, and maintaining client files, to legal work, to managing client relations. relations. Legal Interns: Take in as much knowledge as you can. Skills learned in this firm can be applied to any line of legal work. Writing and research skills will improve as will soft skills in communication, professionalism, and stress management.
