From the President Doug Worrall March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. April showers bring May flowers. or so the weatherman would like to have us believe. While neither of these pearls of wisdom are 100% accurate, spring is HeRe! So while we were dealing with the cold in March, Phil and Josie Grandfield soaked up the sun at Amelia Island and you can read about everything PoRSCHe that happened there in this issue. our inaugural De at Dominion Raceway, right here in our region, just south of Fredericksburg, took place in the beginning of April. We’ll have recently wrapped up our big Annual Charity event at the luxurious Greenbrier Resort as well. So we’ve been a busy group. But wait; you ain’t seen nuthin yet!
New FSR President Doug Worrall and past president Jason Horner
If you’re itching to have some fun in your car(legally of course), we hope you can join us for our fun run after the Williamsburg breakfast May 6th. or, if you like to exceed the posted speed limits(legally again), come out to VIR for our HPDe May 26-28 and get your car on the track.
In June, we’ll have another opportunity to get to the track at VIR with the PCA zone 2 Club Race and Advanced HPDe. you can come out as a spectator and see some Porsches go really fast in actual races. or, if you’re an advanced group driver, you can drive really fast….minus the racing part. There will also be an event at a much more leisurely pace in conjunction with the BMW club in June. We’ll get together like we did last summer for a multi-marque Bar-B-Que at the home of a BMW club member.
And of course, join us for our Williamsburg or Fredericksburg breakfasts the first Saturday of each month. Then our Chesapeake or Richmond breakfasts the second Saturday of each month. Bring your Porsche out to see some old friends or make some new ones! Keep the shiny side up!

February 2017 Membership growth is tracking with increased Porsche sales, particularly four-door models which now outpace the iconic 911 and Boxster/Cayman combined. one exception was 2015 when membership spiked as a result of the 60th Anniversary 911 GTS Club Coupe sale and raffle. By a wide margin, 40% of new members indicate they joined PCA based on member referrals.

•Fun Fact: The First Settlers Region (FSR) has 692 primary members and 1,073 total members making us the fourth largest region in zone 2. FSR hosts up to 60 events per year. Potomac is the largest of the ten regions with over 2,300 primary members and hosts up to 100 events per year. PCA National is also growing to accommodate membership growth. For 50 years, PCA operated out of the homes of volunteers. Today, PCA is gearing up - adding staff and expanding its office in Columbia, MD - with a goal of serving 100,000 primary members by 2020.

•Fun Fact: First Settlers has experienced more than 5% growth for the past several years. Currently, there are 143 Regions in 13 zones across the U.S. and Canada. Growth means some Regions and zones may divide to better serve its members. •Fun Fact: First Settlers has split twice to create Blue Ridge in 1980 and Shenandoah in 1995. PCA recognizes an important element of growth is to keep members happy and renewing. A growing membership will require more events for regions and National. one example is growing National technical seminars from three to four with the addition of a Tech Tactics at the Porsche experience Center in Atlanta. Regions are encouraged to add events that appeal to families and SUV owners. PCA is making investments in communication tools and social media. Members will receive a redesigned and upgraded membership card upon renewal. PCA members are the key to the club’s success. This would not be possible without volunteers to plan and execute the various events. The risk management strategies incorporated in event planning coupled with the strict adherence to safety by participants have resulted in an outstanding safety record. PCA enjoys one of the lowest insurance premiums in the car club world thanks to its safety record. This savings allows PCA to return money to Regions in the form of subsidies that reduce the cost for events. It’s a win-win for everyone!

200 yards of Porsches By Michael Beaudrias Bettie and I are just back from our annual trip to Amelia Island for the Concours (and auctions!) where the highlight this year was the first PCA Werks at Amelia.
last, but not least, the PCA Werks which was held on a golf course right across the street from Gooding on Friday. I am told there were 600 cars registered and that sounds right as there were four rows that extended all the way down the fairway. Unfortunately our camera battery died so I could not take pictures but I suspect PCA will publish many as there were many talented looking cameramen in evidence. My sense was it was 90% 911s including a group from The Ingram Collection (which we need to get back and see!). There seemed to be very few “spectators” as most appeared to be attendees looking at (and talking about) one another’s cars.
The Concours is well worth going to as it is essentially two fairways of 300 + cars of every type from 1900 to brand new on the Ritz Carlton golf course. every year has a theme and an Honoree. This year Al Unser was featured and they had a display of 20 or so cars he had raced from Dirt Track to Indy 500 winners. They also celebrated the Cars of Brumos Racing and had a number of their historic race cars. I took some pictures but you get a better sense of the scope by going on-line and seeing all the professional photos. There are about 25,000 attendees but it does not feel as crowded as Pebble Beach as things are pretty well spread out.
If you are thinking about going (and it is something we high recommend for your bucket list), it is about 600 miles/10 hours from Midlothian an easy but boring drive down 95. Hotels (Ritz, omni) are pricey and likely sold out. Not much more Hotel wise on the Island (or nearby) but there are a lot of Condos/Houses for rent which allow you to walk/shuttle to everything. We are fortunate to have relatives in Brunswick and friends in Jacksonville. Tickets for the Concours are $120 day of but $85 in advance.
The auctions are another highlight and we make a point of going to Gooding when we can. There were Porches ranging from a $60,000 1986 911 Carrera to $5,700,000 for a 1998 911 GT1. I made Bettie drop out at $5 million. Again best to go to the Gooding site and see all the results with better pictures than I took although I do have a picture of Caitlyn Jenner and her 2011 997 GT3 RS. Being only interested in the car, Bettie had to point out to me who the owner was.
you should Go!!
Tech Q&A Submit your question for future issues to the editor at drmcteu@gmail.com
Question: Supplied by Rob Marshall “Coke considerations on Porsche's newer Direct Injected (DI) engines: How much of a concern is it? What is the de-carboning interval? What is the recommended method (Walnut shell blasting etc) and average cost.” Answer: Great question Rob. Carbon build up is definitely a concern on any gasoline direct injected engine especially with the high ethanol content in today’s gasoline. Porsche’s DFI engines are no exception, in fact high performance engines are probably even more of a concern because carbon deposits on valves, injectors and pistons can eventually break apart and work themselves deeper into the combustion chamber. If this occurs the carbon deposits can etch the cylinder walls leading to loss in compression, and the high-quality Porsche performance that you are used will fade, possibly even cause engine failure. Carbon buildup is more problematic in direct injected engine because the fuel injectors spray fuel directly into the combustion chamber and not on the back of the intake valves, which actually helped to clean off the carbon deposits in port fuel injection engines. With no fuel being sprayed directly on injectors, carbon, which forms from unburnt fuel, can build up rapidly on the back of the intake valves. Direct injected engines have many benefits including are more power and better fuel efficiency and throttle response, however carbon buildup is one of their downfalls. I think you’d be hard pressed to get service interval maintenance from the manufacturer on this topic, as most manufacturers usually “punt” on topics like this. To our knowledge there is not a walnut shell adapter for the Porsche DFI engines, but that is one traditional way to handle it. Manual cleaning of valves is another method to eliminate the carbon build up. Both methods are very time consuming, require removal of the intake manifold and are expensive.

We prefer a chemical cleaning process made by BG Products. A specialty tool connects directly to the intake manifold and delivers a dose of BG GDI Intake Valve Cleaner in 20 – 30 second intervals until 22oz are run through the system. If the performance seems really bad then a BG Fuel injection and Combustion Chamber Cleaner can also be used. The final step is a can of BG’s 44k Fuel System Cleaner into the gas tank to help continue the cleansing process. BG recommends this service every 15,000 miles. We feel running the full intake service every two years would be appropriate and a bottle of fuel system cleaner in between the intake service’s will suffice. of course, there is no harm in running the full intake service annually to ensure optimal performance. The intake service starts at $169 for a threestage cleanse. This service can also be run on non-direct injected engines as they are still susceptible to carbon build, with today’s ethanol/gasoline mixture playing a factor. lastly - don’t forget – these are high performance vehicle’s so a good old fashioned “German tune-up” is also necessary from time to time. So, put the right foot to the floor and clean out that carbon build up! Unfortunately, we don’t have before and after pictures from Porsche engines, however the photos below will give you an idea of the severity of carbon build-up in a short amount of time. lots of work and planning goes into the Spring Charity event but it pays off! everyone had a great time enjoying one of America’s most famous resort locations and driving on the local roads. We raised a lot of money for our charities and had fun doing it. It really is all about the people and we have some great ones in this club! A special thanks to Mike Ball for bringing his camera and taking great pictures of the weekend. you can find more photos at this link: reg@nikonimagespace.com and searching for “2017 FSR PCA Greenbrier.

The rain was still coming down on Sunday morning when we checked out and packed our trunks for one more fun run through the mountains. The last stop was in Paint Bank, Virginia and the Swinging Bridge restaurant for some great home cooking. Paint Bank is a tiny hamlet at the intersection of State Routes 18 and 311 – both of them very twisty country roads. The spot is so isolated that it became known as the “Union Hole and a place for deserters and resisters during the Civil War. It has been a site for mining and forestry and, today, the local Fish Hatchery raises brown, brook and rainbow trout used to stock stream in nine counties. I recommend the buffalo burger; with fresh meat raised at a farm just up the road.

Spring Charity Event at the Greenbrier Resort The Greenbrier Resort has been a special place since it first opened its doors to visitors in 1778. In the early days, the Greenbrier Resort was noted for its ‘healing waters’, inviting people from the low-country into the West Virginia Mountains for fresh air and warm water from White Sulfur Springs. In later years, the Greenbrier attracted celebrities, royalty and 26 U.S. presidents. And now the iconic Greenbrier Resort can add the First Settlers Region of the Porsche Club of America to their list of important guests! We parked our Porsches in the front of the main resort building for three days, enjoyed great food, high tea in the lobby, gambling in the casino, and fun with our friends. We gathered again on Friday evening in the lobby bar for our tour of the famous Greenbrier “Bunker”. In the late 1950’s, the U.S. government – specifically President eisenhower – approached the Greenbrier for assistance in creating a secret emergency relocation center to house Congress in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. The facility was ready in 1962 and came close to being activated during the Cuban missile crisis. The bunker was kept stocked and maintained in secret for 30 years until the secret was revealed in a Washington Post article in 1992. Today, the “Bunker” is the most popular tourist attraction at the Greenbrier. The First Settlers Region private tour culminated in a dinner of gourmet pizza in the Culinary Academy housed in the former Bunker dining facility.
The festivities on Saturday night started with a unique, fun experience with a scavenger hunt around the Greenbrier Resort. We divided into teams, not paired with our spouses, and headed off for the challenge!

PCA Is Growing Thanks to You! The Porsche Club of America (PCA) began in the DC area in 1955 and produced its first issue of Panorama that same year. PCA’s first gathering of 12 members has now grown to become the largest single marque car club in the world. Current membership in the United States and Canada is over 75,000 primary members or households. When you add affiliate members, total membership is approaching 120,000!
