Dear Parents/Carers, Welcome to this week’s newsletter. I trust that you are finding this to be a useful source of information. Please let us know if there is any additional news you wish to see included. You will see that we have had another busy and eventful week at Neville Lovett. Nadine Powrie Headteacher Important Information: Open Week This week we opened our doors to prospective parents. The open evening was a success, each department had set up a wide range of activities to present their programmes to potential future students. Thank you to all staff and children who have helped us throughout the event. If you have friends who have not been able to visit during the week please tell them to contact us to arrange a tour at their convenience. Planners to be signed for Monday Morning Please do not forget that all students need to have their planners signed by parents for Monday morning tutor period. Failure to do so will result in a 15 minute detention after school. Year 7 Literacy So, why is snot green exactly? Do spiders have ears? Answers to these questions can be found in the Science Museum's fantastic new non-fiction text 'Why is snot green?' This is only one of a whole array of fiction and non-fiction texts available for our year 7 students to choose from...for FREE! The ever popular 'Booked Up' scheme has surpassed itself this year with a whole variety to entice and enchant even the most reluctant readers: 'The name of this book is...secret!' 'How to train your dragon' and 'Kick off!' are just a handful of the 16 books that year 7 have chosen from. We are excitedly awaiting our delivery of texts after half-term, and these books will be used to enhance Literacy and reading skills within English/Literacy lessons, tutor periods and also in after school clubs. Year 11 College Open evenings We are delighted that so many students have taken the opportunity to visit local Colleges over the past 3 weeks. This has created a lot of discussion about “Life after Neville Lovett” and has helped students to appreciate the range of opportunities open to them in this area. We have had presentations in assemblies by staff from Fareham college, Itchen College and Havant College. Open evenings next week are on Tuesday 18th October at Itchen College and Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th at Barton Peveril College. Most colleges have further open evenings later in the year. All students were given a list of local establishments and the dates of their open evenings. We encourage students to visit as many colleges as they can to help them to be in a strong position when it comes to making a final choice. Year 11 Exam All Year 11’s will be sitting their GCSE Mathematics examination in November. Their first paper is on the 9th November 2011, and the second paper on 14th November. They will need to have their own scientific calculator for the second paper as the school will not be able to provide them. Can you please encourage your son/daughter to revise by using www.mymaths.co.uk, www.samlearning.co.uk, mathswatch (on VLE) and looking at their notes. Revision guides are also on sale for £2.75. Year 11 Interviews All students in Year 11 have a scheduled interview about their academic progress after ½ term. These interview will be conducted by either Mrs Campbell (Head of Year 11), Mr Campbell (Deputy Headteacher), Mrs Powrie (Headteacher). Parents have been invited to attend but it is not compulsory. School Trip to France Next Friday 71 students and nine members of our staff will leave for France. They will have the opportunity to visit Mont St Michel, the Eiffel Tower, enjoy a five day long trip in this beautiful country, and even to spend a day at Disneyland. Parents, please do not forget that passport, EHIC and behaviour agreement will need to be brought in to reception by Monday 17th October. We wish them a safe and wonderful trip! -
