Newsletter Friday, 15th February 2013 Dear Parent/Carer On Monday we held our Academy Consultation Evening for parents of pupils currently at primary school in Year 5 and 6. The meeting was well attended with over 30 parents present. A presentation about the proposed move to Academy was made by members of the Senior Leadership team and governing body and this was followed by an interesting and informative question and answer session. Parents who approached staff after the meeting were very positive about the proposed change. The consultation period ends after the half term break and governors will meet on 5th March to discuss the outcomes of the consultation. I would like to wish you all a very enjoyable half term break. Nadine Powrie, Headteacher Teachers never stop learning Dawn Hayward, Aspirations Academies Trust, attended the school this week as part of a series of 6 x 2 hours training sessions with 20 members of staff. The focus of the training was the engagement of students in the classroom. Working in groups, staff produced a model of an engaged and disengaged class. Discussion followed and staff went away with ideas to further enhance outstanding engagement in the classroom. These images show the innovative work produced by staff during this training. The Curriculum There has been a lot of focus on the subjects schools can provide in their curriculum and what exams will be on offer. We have always believed that our curriculum should offer our students the best routes into college, apprenticeships and employment. As a result of this we have focused on providing a range of academic GCSE supported by a small selection of BTEC subjects. When students leave Neville Lovett they have qualifications they can use not a fist full of empty qualifications. We will continue to provide a curriculum which delivers consistently high standards in the core subjects of English, maths, science, history, geography and modern languages. These will be supported by our commitment to the arts and performing arts, PE and Product design. As students make their option choices these subjects will be supplemented by new ones such as engineering and photography depending upon the interest and profile of the year group. As we explore conversion to becoming an academy this will have no impact on what we believe ,and Ofsted tells us, is a curriculum provision which sets consistently high expectations to achieve outstanding results. Mr Andrew Campbell, Deputy Headteacher (Curriculum) Internal Progress Checks Year 9 and 10 internal progress checks will take place in the Sports Hall during the first week after half term. Date

Newsletter Friday, 15th February 2013 Governors On Wednesday of this week three governors from our Governing Body attended the Hampshire Secondary Schools Conference. This was an excellent forum for us to listen to speakers from the world of education and to liaise with governors from other Hampshire schools. "Accountability, Shaping the Future and Doing What works" were the main topics and these gave us plenty of food for thought and lots of homework! Sue Hackman, Chief Adviser for Schools Standards at the Department of Education, was excellent and Mrs Powrie has subsequently advised us that when she was seconded to the DFE she had felt privileged to work with her; a very passionate, determined and extremely informed woman. Alumni News Congratulations to former Neville Lovett Student Yasmin Parsons who won the Young Sports Woman of the Year Award 2012 this week at the Portsmouth News awards. Yasmin plays Netball for Team Bath (where she goes to University) and played for the England U21 team. PE News On Tuesday 13 February we took a mix of year 7 and 8 students to the area cross country event which was held at Bay House School. Conditions were difficult with the ground being very wet and it was also bitterly cold. The top 16 runners from each age group qualified to represent Gosport and Fareham Schools at the County championships on the 7 th March. Four of our students managed to qualify which was an excellent achievement, they were Katie Pratt, Leah Ilsley, Joshua Osborne and Max Alderson. Well done! Thank you to all the other students who represented the school so admirably. PE Kit - Please ensure that students bring in the correct equipment for PE. Trainers must be worn as plimsolls are not appropriate footwear for the activities we undertake and do not provide adequate foot support.
