Newsletter Friday, 15th March 2013 Dear Parent/Carer It’s been 25 years since Red Nose Day first burst onto our screens and tonight will, once again, see the nation pulling out all the stops and raising funds aimed at transforming the lives of countless people both here at home in the UK and across Africa. This week I would like to highlight a very difficult and sad situation currently being faced by a family within our very own school community. Sam John is a Year 11 student and his brother, Matthew, is in Year 9. In 2006 Sam was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour and for 7 years Sam has undergone a gruelling regime of treatment including 2 years of chemotherapy. Mr and Mrs John, Sam’s parents, have contacted the school to explain that Sam’s tumour has started to become more active and that further urgent treatment is now imperative. The NHS does not have the equipment to provide the level of treatment and care required meaning the only option for the family is to take Sam to America where the facilities are available. The fundraising appeal to help send Sam to America for treatment is now picking up pace and students and staff within the school are all very eager to support the fundraising activities being planned by the family. The aim is to raise in excess of £100,000 by 31st May 2013 to enable Sam to have this vital treatment. The fundraising campaign is called ’Mission for Sam’ and we would appeal for any support you can offer. A website for the appeal is currently under construction and we will let you have the details when they are available. In the meantime if you wish to make a donation the bank and Paypal details are as follows: Lloyds TSB in Fareham Paypal Account:

Newsletter Friday, 15th March 2013 Governor News Governors continue to take an active role in the life of the school and I attended Year 8 parent’s evening on 13th March 2013. It was wonderful to see so many parents in attendance and those I spoke to were very complimentary about the school. One of our Governors works for Barclays Bank and to support the school’s campaign to raise money for ‘mission for Sam’ he has arranged for the Premiership trophy to visit the school on 25th March. The PE Department is going to maximise the fundraising potential of this visit. Watch this space. Elizabeth Webb, Chair of Governors Year 7 Bring a Parent to Science Evening Once again this annual event proved very popular with students and parents. Over 70 people attended to join in the evening’s activities. It was a huge success, with everyone participating in practical activities including Extracting DNA from a Kiwi Fruit; Making and Testing your own Indicator from Red Cabbage; Investigating how to make an Electromagnet stronger and what can a Van der Graaf generator do? The science teachers were very impressed by students showing their parents how to complete practical work safely and have fun in science at the same time! A few parents even asked if they could come back to school!! Here are some comments from students and images of the evening: “The science evening was really fun as it gave our parents a taste of what the science is like taught in the school. My favourite experiment was with Mr Snoswell because I got to give my sister an electric shock. As well as that my hair went very frizzy!” Charlie Niker “At the fantastic science evening I had a blast. I especially enjoyed learning about the Vander Graph. This is because I attempted to shock my friend but I lent to close to the table and the metal frame gave me an electric shock. I loved the whole evening and so did my parents. I would definitely do it again.” Melody Watson “I found all of the experiments fun and exciting but my favourite one was the one with Mr Patel because I showed my dad what to do. Also I could explain what we do at school to him” . Oliver C
