Dear Parents/Carers, This week we had our Year 8 Parent’s Evening and the number of parents who attended exceeded 80% for the first time. Parents have been very complimentary about the automated appointment booking system and the extended hours for the evening were also well received. The Science Department invited parents for an evening of Science and to see so many parents attending and engaged with the learning of their children was wonderful. There are more plans for other departments to open their doors to parents in the future. Nadine Powrie Headteacher Important Information: Important Dates for your Calendar: Wednesday, 28th March from 4.00 to 7.00 pm: Year 8 Options Fayre Wednesday, 2nd May : Year 7 Parents Evening Humanities Parental Workshop - Tuesday 20th March 4pm – 5pm. Invitations have been sent out inviting selected parents to come into school to meet the teachers and find out how the school is supporting their child and what they can do at home, it is a great opportunity for parents to help their children make progress in Humanities. Year 10 Camp International On Thursday Camps International came to talk about the way to raise the money for their trip to Kenya. 8 students and one parent attended. The students were Kelly Chandler, Sam Lewry, Michael Desouza, Faith Ali, Freya Flewitt, Finn Truman, Nathan Scott and Lilly Thomas. Obviously to raise the £3800+ pounds they need they are going to have to work hard and will be looking for your support and help. Please look out for the events that they will be doing and support them as much as you can. Some of the events that they are already thinking of are some sporting challenges, inset car wash days, car boot sales as well as various individual sponsorship challenges! They will be setting up a Facebook page so you can follow them! More news to follow so please keep an eye out and support them as much as possible. Biomed trip –Blood – The Red Stuff On Thursday 8th March Year 8 Students took part in a Science Trip to Southampton University. They had the opportunity to participate in a lot of activities, devised by Medical Students, as part of their on-going training and development. This visit also provided an excellent opportunity for aspiring doctors to meet the medical students away from the exhibits and to just have a chat with them. It gave them a chance to find out what they did to get them to medical school. Students really enjoyed the experience: “The students there answered our questions to make sure we know what they are talking about. The experiments were loads of fun and it wasn’t boring! Wish we could do more trips like this in the future.” Amber Jones “I liked all the activities. It was good to get involved. I wish it had lasted longer and we had more time to do everything.” Sophie Stewart Young Citizen of Honour Award! Congratulations to Patrick Stewart who has been named the Fareham Young Citizen of Honour. He is receiving his award from Princess Anne on 20th March at HMS Collingwood when she is in the area for the opening of Fareham’s Queens Jubilee events. There are further ceremonies and events for Patrick to attend including meeting the Mayor of Fareham, tea in the mayor’s parlour and meetings with local MP, Mark Hoban in May. We are very proud of him, well done Patrick! Brain Tumour Research—Updates Craig Gibbons who visited us as a patron of the charity two months ago has qualified for the 4 x 100m relay quartet at this year’s Olympics.! Well done Craig! The major fundraising event will take place on Friday, 30th March and is called ‘Wear a Hat Day’. Details will follow, but it is a fun way of supporting a good cause so be ready to participate. The tutor group who raise the most will have a trip to Portsmouth University to view the research laboratory!

Theme Days Following the success of the Human Rights theme day, another day this week was devoted to Multi-Culturalism where students engaged with the ideas of “What does it mean to be British?” The students considered ideas surrounding: Is there anything distinctive about being British? How do other cultures differ from ours? We looked at isolation, separation, assimilation and integration. One of the highlights was completing the UK Citizenship test and evaluating if it was an effective way of testing whether someone should be granted citizenship. There is one further Theme Day planned for the Summer term which will focus on the work of charities. Bring a Parent evening On Tuesday, 13th March we organised a Year 7 ‘Bring a Parent’ evening in Science. The event was a tremendous success. There were over thirty students and their parents who attended. Everyone enjoyed themselves. All the parents said that they would like to see events like this in the future. One commented that "It was nice to spend some time with my daughter." Thank you to all those who attended the evening. Students of the week: Year 7: Jamie Hodgson, Freyah Tyrell, Amber Dawson, Amy Bishop, Eleanor Humphries, Josh Cingoz, Charlie Limburn-Green, Daisy Perrett for outstanding contribution to the SAS garden getting vegetables planted and keeping it clean after the winter. Year 8: Toby Roe, Amber Jones, Jessica White, Matt John, Sasha Nicholls, George Rogers, April Brown, Joshua Maginnis, Aaron Blay, Rachel Stansfield for being excellent ambassadors to the school and helping with interview candidates last week. Well done to you all! Year 9: Gemma Neal for being proactive in raising money in preparation for sports relief. Year 10: Josh Chapman for the work and comments that he made for the theme days. Year 11: Gemma Dawson, for being a first class student. Thanks to her hard work, commitment and strict revision programme she managed to go from a D to an A in her History examination (resit). Her dedication is a credit to her and she should feel very proud of the results of her efforts- well done, Gemma!
