Newsletter Friday, 21st September 2012 Dear Parent, Carer We approach the end of the third week of the autumn term and the school continues to have a wonderful buzz in the air. The students are working exceptionally well towards their challenging targets and the new extra-curricular programme is proving very popular; there is something for everyone from sport to Science. The standard of uniform remains very good and we will continue to monitor and maintain this high standard. You will have seen reports in the press concerning changes that the Government plan to make to the exam process and I would like to reassure parents and students that you will be kept well informed by us regarding these changes and the impact on our students and their families. I would like to wish you all a relaxing weekend. My Senior Leadership Team and our Board of Governors will be meeting over the weekend to discuss strategies for the coming year as we continue our uncompromising drive towards becoming an outstanding school providing the very best education for your children. Nadine Powrie Headteacher Year 11 Having only recently taken over as progress leader for year 11, I am starting to get a feel for the dynamics of the year group. I have taught some of them over the last 2 years, so I am familiar with the year group. The year 11s are an outstanding year group with much potential. In fact the senior leadership team strongly believe that at least 85% of them can achieve 5 A*-Cs including English and maths with all of them achieving 5 A*-Cs. In this week’s assembly I highlighted the importance of them being motivated, ambitious and rapid in their learning. It is common knowledge that we have high expectation of each student at the school, therefore we are always challenging them to achieve more. The students know that they have less than 270 days until their final exam, so working hard now will pay off when they get their excellent exam results in August . The year 11s are very fortunate to have Mr Campbell Deputy Headteacher as another senior leader of the year group, his vast experience will be invaluable. I appreciate your continued support, let’s all work together to ensure your child gets the results they deserve. David Butterworth, Assistant Headteacher—Progress Leader Year 10 Work Experience Information Evening There was a packed school hall on Thursday evening for the information session for parents and students in year 10 who will complete their work experience next year. Attendance was in excess of 90% of the year group. Thank you to Miss Richardson, Miss Galan, Mrs Sherwood, Miss Fallon, Mr Freeman and Miss Piper for their organisation of the event. Representatives from EBP gave a brief explanation of their role and explained how parents could access WEXonline to explore the options open to students as they seek a work placement. Parents and student then had the opportunity try out the WEX system using the school computers ensuring that they could log in as required and have any questions answered. Year 11 Bring a Parent to Science Evening The Science Department welcomed parents and students to the Science Block on Thursday where information was provided regarding the new AQA Science Course that Year 11 students will be taking. As well as providing a great amount of useful information there was the opportunity to participate in some ‘hands on’ Science including ‘Where is the starch stored in plants?’ and ‘Energy changes in chemical reactions’. Thank you to the Science Department for arranging this very successful evening.
