Dear Parents/Carers, I would like to congratulate all of our students for their hard work during the past six weeks of term. We are continuing to make good progress. I hope you and your children have enjoyable and restful break. Nadine Powrie Headteacher Important Information: English and Math Review from the Local Authority Both subjects had a “Mini Ofsted” on Wednesday 20th October. The feedback was extremely positive. Let us not forget that both departments achieved above 70% in this summer GCSE exam. The inspectors were particularly impressed with the highly consistent journey of both departments: “variety of teaching approaches”, “students are making good progress in lessons”, “good verbal and written feedback to students”, “staff have great working relationship with students”. So a huge well done to all the staff and students in the English and Maths departments. Mathematics All Year 11’s will be sitting their GCSE Mathematics examination in November. Their first paper is on the 9th November 2011, and the second paper on 14th November. They will need to have their own scientific calculator for the second paper as the school will not be able to provide them. Can you please encourage your son/daughter to revise by using www.mymaths.co.uk, www.samlearning.co.uk, mathswatch (on VLE) and looking at their notes. Revision guides are also on sale for £2.75. Science
Year 11 Double Science retakes will take place on the 15th November. You will be receiving a letter to confirm which retakes your child is taking.
Year 10 Double Scientists have 2 modular exams on the 15th November- Biology 1a and Chemistry 1b these count towards 25% of their GCSE. Make sure students are revising following their teachers instructions!
Year 9, 10, 11 Revision guides: students who have already paid for revision guides will be able to collect them from their class teachers immediately after half term. Any students who have not paid their £2.75 should do so before the 9th November to meet the next order deadline. Any queries please contact Mrs Atkins
Humanities
Year 11 Geography students: revision sessions happen after school every Thursday in A11.
Year 11 History students: revision sessions happen every Friday after school in A14.
All Year 7 and 8: Geography in the news. Have you read or seen a news article that is linked to geography? If so, please bring it in and give it to Miss Allbut in A11. Keep an eye out for any ‘freaky’ weather or natural disasters!
BTEC CCLD Let us remind you that it is essential that all KS4 CCLD students keep to deadlines set for their coursework. If they are falling behind please encourage them to go to Homework club or to come after school and work in A12, particularly if they need help from the teacher. Homework is always to keep up with the coursework we are currently doing. For Year 11 it is Unit 2 Assignment 1 Pass 1 and for Year 9 and 10 it is Unit 1 Assignment 1 Pass2.

Newsletter This Week’s Events:
Year 10 EBP Day On Wednesday fifty Year 10 students were able to participate in a ‘Meet a Professional Day’. They were a credit to the school and themselves. The professionals who were there were very positive and said what polite and articulate young people they were. Religious Studies Special mention to Amy Bishop in Year 7 for her beautifully painted presentation for her Island homework. Also well done to all the year 7s in RS who produced posters and power points for their presentation homework. We were also particularly proud of those students who were very reluctant to stand at the front of class and give a talk but they conquered their nerves and did very well. First Aid Course All the Skill Force students have passed their First Aid course. They are: Charlotte Parsons, Tom Keech, Liam Marshall, Michael Moore, Katie James and Michael Wood. Students of the week Year 7: Ryan Jones, goalkeeper for Crofton Saints – Won 6-2 and he saved loads of potential goals, and Jessica King, who got up and gave an amazing singing performance in her music lesson Year 8: Jason Prescott Year 9: Max Ayling, who has an excellent overall attitude to work and gave a tremendous anthology of poems to Miss Piper in English. Year 10: Jack Bevan for passing his first aid certificate, which he took at Skill Force. Year 11: Anna Mcardle, who is a top student right across the board but is also an Explorer Scout, is involved in the in Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and plays in a band! A great all-rounder!
