Newsletter Friday, 22nd March 2013 Dear Parent/carer Our plans to support the Mission for Sam campaign are progressing quickly. We have invited all schools in Hampshire to join us on 28th March for a non uniform day with the proceeds going to the appeal. We have had a number of responses already and Bay House in Gosport and two primary schools have already committed to join us. Sam was a pupil at Wallisdean school where his mother now works and they will be organising a number of fundraising events themselves in the summer term. Details of the events planned so far by the school and family are contained within the newsletter. As Easter approaches plans are in place for a number of revision and coursework sessions to be held during the holidays. Letters have been sent to the parents/carers of all students we feel would benefit from attending these sessions. They are aimed at ensuring students achieve their best possible outcomes in their final exams. Please help us by ensuring you return the reply slip to school by Tuesday next week so that we can finalise the planning for each of these events. Thank you for your continued support. Nadine Powrie, Headteacher IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YEAR 8 PARENTS Options Year 8 In each of the past two years students in year 8 have selected the subjects they wish to take through to GCSE in year 11. This year there will be a slight change to the process. There are a number of uncertainties around which subjects can be counted as GCSEs. For example, subjects which are seen as being very similar in the skills being used such as art and textiles are being coded as the same subject. Some subjects we would like to offer have not yet been agreed by the body which oversees all qualifications in England. This could mean we allow students to start them in year 8 only to withdraw them part way through the year. This would not be fair on our students. A letter will be going out to all year 8 parents with more information by email /post next week. Andrew Campbell, Deputy Headteacher, Curriculum Year 11 Many year 11 students have been working very hard in lessons and after school in preparation for their upcoming exams. Students are being expected to revise and complete coursework for a range of different subjects, which can be very stressful. If you are a year 11 parent/carer please make sure that your child is getting adequate rest time away from study. Some students are revising 4 hours per night. Encourage them to revise for short periods of time no longer than 30 minutes without a short break. I would also encourage you to help them revise by quizzing them for example. Feel free to contact any member of staff via email (on school website) if you would like information regarding your child’s revision/study. To ensure that your child is spending quality time revising, help them complete a revision timetable which is adaptable for their schedule and fits in with their hobbies/interests. All of these simple approaches could really help relieve some of the vast pressure which your child is undoubtedly under. David Butterworth, Assistant Headteacher , Progress Leader Year 11 Leavers Hoodies Students have now received the confirmation of their orders and payment is required by Monday, 25th March 2013. Cheques should be made payable to Hampshire County Council. A number of students missed the order deadline and the company will be contacted to see if an additional order can be sent after the Easter Break. School Prom This will take place on Friday, 21st June 2013 at the Meon Valley Golf and Country Club. Students should arrive from 7.00 pm and dinner will be served at 7.45 pm. The cost of the evening will not exceed £30 and this year students have opted for a formal sit down meal consisting of 3 courses and coffee/tea. Welcome drinks will be served on arrival and there will be a nonalcoholic bar on the evening.

Barclays Premier League Football fans can visit the school between 1.30 pm and 4.30 pm to have their photograph taken with this spectacular trophy. A professional photographer will take the images and a minimum donation of £5 is requested.
Thursday, 28th March:
Non Uniform day. Students and staff are asked to donate £1.00 to participate. All schools in Hampshire have been invited to join in on the day.
Saturday, 6th April:
Bring and Buy sale at at Crofton Community Centre from 10 am to 2 pm
Sunday, 7th April:
Skittles day at the Crofton pub in Stubbington from 3 pm.

Cake sale at The Bugle Hotel, Titchfield Square from midday to 2.00 pm

Newsletter Friday, 22nd March 2013 Governor News It is with regret that I must advise parents that Community Governor, Martyn Chadderton, has resigned from the Governing Body. Martyn will be starting on a new career path by training to become a Primary School teacher. It has been a pleasure for us to work with Martyn and we wish him every success in the future. The Governing Body met on Tuesday, 19th March 2013. Mrs Ashley, Deputy Headteacher for Teaching and Learning, delivered an outstanding workshop on lesson observations. Governors went to lessons to use and indeed test the skills to observe lessons. We were impressed with our students’ engagement. Elizabeth Webb, Chair of Governors Our Amazing Students Creative Writing Competition Miss Richardson is delighted to report that two of her Year 7 students entered a creative writing competition. The competition organisers received thousands of entries and we are very proud of Jack Henderson and Amy Ashcroft who both were successful. The winning pieces are to be compiled in a book and the school will receive a complimentary copy. Congratulations to these talented students.
PE News Year 10 Boys Rugby success This week the Boys Year 10 Rugby Team won the Hampshire Plate 7's at the Hampshire Collegiate school. This was a fantastic achievement and they now have their first trophy of the season. Many congratulations to the team who represented the school brilliantly on a great afternoon of competitive sport.
