Newsletter Friday, 23rd November 2012 Dear Parent, Carer You will see from the newsletter that we continue to have a packed programme for the remainder of the term. Neville Lovett Community School are pleased to inform parents that we are currently working with Dr Russell J. Quaglia and his team, from the Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations, to raise the aspirations of our students. When students of any age have high aspirations they are able to set goals for the future and, most importantly, take steps in the present to reach those goals. When students have high aspirations they take on new challenges, persevere through difficult tasks and confidently take steps towards the future. Neville Lovett Community School have consistently high expectations of our students and this exciting collaboration with outstanding practitioners will allow us to assist our students to continue to make rapid and sustained progress. I look forward to sharing more details with you in future newsletters. Children in Need Congratulations to our generous students who raised £635.32 for Children in Need on Friday by holding a non-school uniform day. Lava Lamp Science class—Year 4 pupils The Neville Lovett Science department warmly welcomed our local Year 4s on Thursday evening. Among them we had a fine collection of budding young scientists and IT enthusiasts. We kicked the session off by visiting our iPad room and made use of QR codes. Students discovered that they would be creating their very own lava lamps. We then moved to the labs and students got suited and booted into their science gear - they truly looked the part. The Year 4s showed off their impressive knowledge of science and created chemical reactions which emulated lava lamps. Parents also popped over and were suitably impressed! Thank you Year 4, we hope you enjoyed your time in Neville Lovett. Miss A Fallon, Science Teacher Author day On Thursday, 15th November 2012 we welcomed the popular children's author Ali Sparkes, writer of the Unleashed series and Frozen In Time book, to Neville Lovett Community school. The purpose of the visit was for Year 6, 7, and 8 students to listen to how a writer became inspired to become a writer and how this skill can be born in everyone. In Ali Sparkes school report she has stated that it said: 'Alison would do so much better if she would only stop hanging out of the window'. If Ali can inspire the younger generation to embrace the world of literature and take pleasure in the joy of reading then we are one step closer to improving literacy amongst our students. Having excellent literacy skills is the key to academic success in all subject areas. Therefore these enrichment days are vital in encouraging each child to pick up a book and read. I believe that when a child takes that step to independently read a book they will be more likely to read another and another and so on. Children’s Author Andy Briggs will be visiting us in December. Mrs A Lowe, Assistant Headteacher, English

Mrs L Sherwood, PE Teacher Year 10 Boys Basketball team Neville Lovett 28 Cams Hill 13 Following last week’s loss to Bay House, the team were looking to get back on the winning run against a large Cams Hill squad. Following some very useful pre match drills, the team were looking extremely confident and ready to take on the opposition. Defensively, they played exceptionally well winning most of the rebounds and breaking fast out of defence. There whole team performed as a unit and points were scored throughout the squad. A well-deserved victory and the boys are looking forward to taking on their next opponents. Mr Edwards, Progress Leader
