23rd March 2012

Dear Parents/Carers, Mark Hoban, our Local MP visited the school last Friday to meet with me and to look around the school. We are very grateful for his on going support and recognition of all the hard work taking place at Neville Lovett. Please look out in the Portsmouth News for an article on Patrick Stewart who this week received his Fareham Citizen of Honour Award from the Princess Royal during her visit to the town. Well done Patrick—we are very proud of you. Next week is the last week before Easter and our rewards trip invitations have been handed out today. Well done to all those who have worked so hard to achieve a place on these trips. All students are invited to wear a hat in school on the day—we are sure they will be imaginative! The tutor group who raise the most money between now and the Summer Break will have a trip to Portsmouth University to view the research laboratory in September! Easter Revision Classes RS, Geography and CCLD departments offer Easter revision/booster sessions for selected students on 2nd/3rd April from 10 to 2pm. Letters are going out to parents this week, please return them as soon as possible. Sports Relief There has been some fantastic fund raising over the past two weeks by a number of Year 7 students : cake sales, sponsored silences, raffles, to name but a few. Today we are having a non-uniform day to raise more funds. We have raised £43.48 for the cake sale today This is very encouraging and I look forward to receiving the final sum by next week. Well done to all those getting involved. Students Voice Ten students, 2 per year group, have been chosen to represent their respective Year groups and meet with their Heads of Year on a weekly basis to raise their voice. The chosen students are: Year 7: Leah Ilsley, Karrianne Williams Year 8:Toby Roe, Sophie Stewart Year 9: Emma Appleton, Ben Wallace-Stock Year 10: Lauren Wallis, Patrick Stewart. Year 11: Charles Halford and Charlea Frimley Their role will be to express their Year group opinions, concerns and ideas. The chosen students are really engaged and willing to help: “As a representative of Year 7, I can help people with any problem they have.” Karrianne. “I believe that I can help make changes which will make the school a better place.” Toby. We will also have two class representatives for each year group to work with Heads of Year on their Year Group Development Plan. The definitive list will be decided next week, and meetings are scheduled once a week. Both groups will have a key role to play in our school’s improvement, we look forward their first meetings 'outcomes. A Plea to parents/grandparents Do you have time to spare to help with literacy in school? If you would like to help please contact h.whale@nevillelovett.hants.sch.uk Our British swimmer star! On the 11/12 March the final weekend of the ASA Hampshire County Championships took place. Adele Gaskin, Year 8, swam in 4 races (100m Individual Medley and 50m, 100m, 200m Breaststroke) and in 2 races the previous weekend (400m Individual Medley and 800m Freestyle). She achieved new personal best times in all of her races, and finished in 13th places overall in her age group, which consisted of 69 swimmers. This was a fantastic achievement, considering she is still receiving treatment for a shoulder injury. Her next competition will be a 4 day festival over Easter, where she will be aiming to get her Regional qualifying times. Well done for your hard work Adele and good luck for the future!

St Vincent college Journal Trophy! As part of the national Science and Engineering week last week, twelve Year 10 G&T students also took part in the annual Journal Trophy held at St Vincent College. Our teams finished in 3rd and 1st Place. The winning team of Jessica Charge, Charlotte Pearson and Harry Metcalf brought back the trophy for the first time. Year 9 Rugby: Neville Lovett 49 Brune Park 15 A highly competitive game with some good rugby played by both sides. Neville Lovett were more dominant in the scrum and used this to their advantage winning the ball against the head on a number of occasions. The forwards competed well up front making the ball available for the backs on a regular basis, which they used with some intelligent play. Another successful rugby season for the Year 9 team and they (me) are already looking forward to next year. A special mention for two year 8 students who made their Year 9 debuts in this game, Matthew John and Chandler Harris. Well done. My vote for most valuable player in this game goes to Michael Thomson for his intelligent play at scrum half along with his ferocious tackling. Mr Collins. Students’ Career Choices Our students receive regular careers information to help them prepare for their future. We would like to share with you some of their current wishes: Year 8: Darcy Pontin and Lauren Hamilton Childcare, Jasmin Bannerman Medicine Year 10: Thomas Keech Construction via an apprenticeship, Ashley Rennie Catering/ Music College Year 11: Callum McInally Engineering, Josh Beecroft Pharmacy, Bradley Hartley Naval engineering, Carla Johnson Humanities Students of the week: Year 7: Ryan Jones for producing an excellent Sir Winston Churchill artefact in his Humanities HLT Year 8: All our year 8 cake sellers for Sport Relief. Well done and thank you! Year 9: Jack Stroulger who achieved 160cm in the high jump at his athletics club. He now moves on to pole vault. Good luck Jack. Year 10: Stephen Howell, Shaun Kelly, Milly Wilson, Sophie Baldock and Evie Wrixon who Ripsticked down to Lee-onSolent and back to raise money for Sport Relief. They believe they have over £100 but are unsure as yet the final figure. Well done to all five of them. Year 11: Dan Godfrey who produced a very comprehensive PowerPoint in science on the topic of absorption. It was well-researched and showed good use of technology and in producing this, Dan developed a clear understanding of the subject matter.
