25th November 2011

Dear Parents/Carers, We can now confirm that the school will be closed to all students on Wednesday, 30th November, as a result of nationwide industrial action. As you know, members of the ATL, NAHT, NASUWT, NUT and Unison have voted in favour of such action; at least 25 members of staff have indicated that they intend to join the strike and therefore we have no option but to close the school. The school will be open for those staff who are not on strike. We are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause to you and to your family. Parents Survey We are currently conducting a survey to assess your satisfaction with you child’s experience at Neville Lovett. 83% of you think that their child enjoys school and 82% are globally happy with their child’s experience at Neville Lovett. As far as teaching is concerned, 89% of you think that the school has high academic expectations and standards and 81% think that teaching is good. Thank you to all of you who answered the survey, it is very useful for us as we always want us and your children to go “beyond expectations”. Facebook May we ask you to be careful with your children and their posts on Facebook. Comments may cause harm to other students and our school. The social network is not the place to criticise the school or teachers, so please prevent them from mentioning either Neville Lovett or members of our staff on Facebook. Thank you for your co-operation. Children in Need A lot of activities took place around the school, involving both students and teachers, to raise funds for Children in Need: cooking and selling cakes, dressing as students, selling other goodies... So far we raised £1016,52, well done and thank you to all who participated and those who supported them. Shoe box appeal Many thanks to all those who donated towards this appeal. We managed to put together 13 shoe boxes full of items for children in Eastern Europe. These were collected by The Rotary Club on Monday and they were extremely thankful. Thank you to all those who donated towards this appeal. Artist in residence On Thursday 1st December professional mosaic Artist Liz D’Ath will be working in the Art department with a selected group of year 7,8 and 9 students. They will be designing and creating three mosaic panels that will be included in a Broadlaw Community project. The theme for the designs is ‘community’. Ballet Girl at the King’s Theater in December We are very proud of Kerri Briggs, one of our students who is appearing in Cinderella at the King’s Theatre, Southsea. “I have been dancing for 11 years doing different styles including ballet, tap, jazz, modern and street. I also help to teach younger pupils, and assist my dance teacher. “ In May 2011, she auditioned for the English Youth Ballet performance of the Nutcracker at Kings Theatre. She received a letter, and then attended the casting day on Friday the 9th of September. She was chosen to join the English Youth Ballet performance and to train alongside professional ballet dancers and 100 other young dancers. She was given the role of a lead flower. So costing £395 she spends Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays training with the English Youth Ballet for 6 hours, rehearsing and boosting her technical skills, whilst experiencing taking part in a real professional production. The production takes place from Wednesday 7th December 2011 to Sunday 1st January 2012 at Kings Theatre, Southsea. “Hopefully I will get a career from dancing or choreography, or teach my own classes or open my own dance school and give other young dancers an opportunity like this!”

Newsletter This Week’s Events:

One day Year 7 students Three teachers, Andrea Willis, Oliver Wood and Katy Micklewright wore school uniform on 18th November in order to collect some pennies for the Children in Need. Year 7 Rugby Team After last weeks success against Crofton and Henry Cort the Year 7 team travelled to Crofton again for another fiercely contested fixture. Unfortunately we were a couple of players short due to illness and no shows. Neville Lovett dominated at the scrimmage and managed to win many balls against the head, however we were a little slow to the break down at times which did not allow us to develop any continuity to our play. The tackling was ferocious yet again with Ben Ord, Carl Whittingham and Connor Tuckey putting in some big hits which stopped the opposition in their tracks. The final score was Crofton 15 Neville Lovett 10, tries being scored by Josh Osborne and Jeffrey Jerome. Well done to everyone who took part! Students of the week Year 7: Karrianne Williams and Leah Ilsley for providing us with an excellent and informative presentation about the Houses of Parliament. This takes a lot of courage and confidence to stand up and present this to the Year group. Well done girls. Year 8: Liam Chapman for raising £41,75 selling cakes on Children in Need day. Year 9: Gemma Neal for raising money for Children in Need by doing a sponsored run at lunchtime Leah Karrianne on the field. Year 10: Tom Keech for the help that he gave to a member of public in school and the resilience and responsibility he is showing in Science. Year 11: Eden Wye for being a member of a Junior field gun crew for last 4 years. This long term commitment shows dedication and resilience. Well done to Eden for making such a contribution.
