Newsletter Friday, 26th April 2013 Dear Parent/Carer The summer term has started exceptionally well and on Wednesday our excellent Rock Challenge Team won an award at the Portsmouth Guildhall for their Concept Originality. The team of 61 students participated in this annual event against many Hampshire Schools. There will be coverage of the event in the local press. These talented and committed students worked hard to prepare for this and created the set designs. Congratulations to all who took part. Another group of students working extremely hard at present are our Year 11s as they prepare for their upcoming exams. As a thank you for their commitment and efforts, we were pleased to provide them with pizzas at lunchtime on Wednesday. As the term progresses I will keep you informed of the progress of the work on the two DT rooms that has now begun and you will see from the photo that this is a huge task. The modernised facilities will be a welcome upgrade in facilities for our Technology Department. I look forward to welcoming Year 10 parents to school on Parents Evening next week and thank all those who have booked to date. Refreshments will be on sale during the evening. Nadine Powrie, Headteacher Uniform Please be aware that, in accordance with the school uniform policy if students attend school wearing the incorrect uniform parents will be contacted on the day and students will be sent home. Rock Challenge Report On Wednesday 24th April, 61 students left school at 8.45 to travel to the Portsmouth Guildhall to compete in the annual Rock Challenge competition. Our theme this year was 8 years in 8 minutes: the story of an old lady whose husband dies and she becomes a recluse. We practised all day and our final rehearsal on stage was at 4 pm. We were allowed to watch the fist half of the show and then we opened the second half with our performance. All of the students were a credit to the school and their behaviour throughout the day was impeccable. We didn't win overall but won Concept Originality Award. We returned to school at midnight very weary, but having had an amazing day! Lorraine Sherwood, Teacher of PE Haircut Club Many thanks to all those that attended the event held in the school hall on Tuesday. I am pleased to say that ÂŁ630.50 was raised for Mission for Sam through this event. Thanks to Mrs John who carried out the haircuts and to Sam for assisting. Here are the before and after images of myself, Mr Herington and Mr Collins Neil Edwards, Progress Leader Year 8 and 9

Newsletter Friday, 26th April 2013 Visitor to School On Wednesday we had a visit from a training hearing dog for deaf people. His name is Isaac and he came to visit the HIRA department to meet the students and staff so they could learn a little about the job he will do when he is fully trained. Hearing dogs live with deaf people in order to offer them greater independence by hearing everyday sounds that they cannot. The students thoroughly enjoyed the visit and are very grateful to Isaac and his volunteer trainer Tracey. To find out more, scan the QR code. Katy Micklewright, Teacher of the Deaf Site Team plans to September 2013 Maths classrooms upstairs in C block have been redecorated with old fittings removed and a plan in place to redecorate the classrooms in A block. The onset of the fine weather means grounds maintenance now includes regular cutting of the grassed areas and weeding of flowerbeds. We have contractors on site working on the DT rooms as previously reported and these works meant that the exam’s room has had to be relocated from C block to D block. We anticipate work to begin on the tennis courts and boilers soon. Phil Jordan, Site Manager Social Media It has come to our attention that students have been using social media sites such as Facebook to invite members of school staff to become their ‘friends’. Members of staff should not be approached by students and we would be grateful if parents could remind students that these requests are inappropriate. Information for parents on safe use of the internet can be found at http://www.saferinternet.org.uk. Extra Curricular PE Clubs this term Day Monday
