Newsletter Friday, 28th September 2012 Dear Parent, Carer Last weekend the Senior Leadership Team and governors went on our Governor’s Retreat. The focus of the retreat was the school’s journey towards outstanding. Governors will be working with Mrs Ashley, Deputy Headteacher, on Learning and Teaching, looking in particular at lesson observations. After the half term break some of our governors will resume their vital links with Student Support Services in the drive to assist students to perform exceptionally well in literacy. Governors arranged a coffee afternoon for staff as a thank you and in recognition of their hard work in attaining such a successful set of results for our students in the summer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Governors for their dedication and hard work and my Leadership team for their systematic and uncompromising drive to support me in taking the school to outstanding. Nadine Powrie, Headteacher Introducing our New Staff Miss Hillier, PE Teacher. “I’m Miss Hillier, I’m in my first year of teaching after completing a PGCE at Chichester University last year. I am captain of and play football for Portsmouth FC Ladies. When I was younger, I played 6 different sports at county level, so I hope that my knowledge of lots of sports can inspire Neville Lovett students to try new sports and continue participate in sport and physical activity when they leave school.” Mrs Lowe, Assistant Headteacher, English: “I began my teaching career in September 1999 and have loved every aspect of my role as a teacher of English ever since. I believe it is the role of all English teachers to evoke in each child a love of literature where they can read between the lines of a text and interpret meaning and therefore become ultimately inspired to succeed academically. Having excellent English skills are an essential tool to be able to succeed in the outside world beyond school life and I believe, as do all the members of my team, that it is our role to impasse our knowledge and passion to every child we teach. In the tough world in which we live it is of paramount importance that every child that leaves Neville Lovett School is able to present themselves as the best they can be in order to apply for the best colleges, universities and the best jobs.” Miss Harvey, Geography Teacher: “I was working at the Petersfield School last year and successfully passed my NQT year. When my temporary contract came to the end and I needed to move schools I decided Neville Lovett would be a good place to continue my career due to the vision and ethos of the school and the evident drive for improvement. I have very high expectation of all students I teach and aim to ensure that I support and challenge every individual. In the long term I am keen to introduce the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme to Neville Lovett School to give pupils the opportunity to take part in a rewarding project to develop their skills.” Year 9 Parents Coffee afternoon from 4.00 pm to 5.00 pm Year 9 parents are invited to join the Senior Leadership team and staff for coffee on the afternoon of 18th October 2012 from 4.00 pm to 5.00 pm. Newsletter Friday, 28th September 2012 Governors News The Board of Governors had a very productive retreat last weekend when we worked with the Senior Leadership Team on the vision for the future and how we can contribute to the school becoming outstanding. We discussed strategies for the coming year not only to sustain but to strengthen the uncompromising drive forward for our students to have the very best education we can provide. Following the excellent, informative and thought provoking presentations on the Friday evening we set to and developed our annual business plan on Saturday morning. As part of this individual governors are linked with specific faculties and members of the Senior Leadership Team which will enable us to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the school. We all felt that this was time well spent . Mrs E Webb, Chair of Governors Football Success Neville Lovett School hosted Guernsey Grammar School in the first round of the English Schools on Wednesday 26th September. It was Neville Lovett who took an early lead with a nice finish from Jordan Conway for his first goal of the season. Some impressive defensive performances from Carl Barton and Max Feltham nullified any Guernsey attacking play. Neville Lovett took a 2-0 lead into the half time interval after Jordan Conway was pushed in the box and we were awarded a penalty. George Higgins nonchalantly stroked the ball into the top corner from the resulting spot kick. Guernsey Grammar were a much stronger attacking force in the second half and soon pulled a goal back with a nice little finish from their centre forward. Guernsey levelled the score with 10 minutes to go. With a change of tactics in extra time Neville Lovett soon restored their lead with a nice headed finish from George Higgins and managed to protect their lead with some excellent defending. All of the boys worked extremely hard and put in solid performances but two boys in particular stood out and they were Carl Barton and Max Feltham. Well done to everyone involved and we look forward to the draw on the 1.10.12
