4th November 2011
Dear Parents/Carers, We hope you enjoyed the half term break. This week we would like to focus your attention on the School Website. We are in the process of making a lot of changes to the Website to enable you to easily access all the information you may need. If you have any enquiries regarding it please let us know! Nadine Powrie Headteacher Important Information: Mathematics All Year 11’s will be sitting their GCSE Mathematics examination in November. Their first paper is on the 9th November 2011, and the second paper on 14th November. They will need to have their own scientific calculator for the second paper as the school will not be able to provide them. Can you please encourage your son/daughter to revise by using www.mymaths.co.uk, www.samlearning.co.uk, mathswatch (on VLE) and looking at their notes. Revision guides are also on sale for £2.75. Website updates The website is under continuous change, in order to provide as accurate as possible information. This week and during the holiday, we put some new pictures in the Photo Gallery, (see Information Bank, Image Gallery) and added a new article in the ‘News’ part, about our Headteacher’s concern about an Ofsted website for parents feedback. The calendar is regularly updated as well. It is a great way to see what is going on in your children’s school. Please remember to have a regular look and see what’s going on there! Shoe box appeal As a Year 7 group, we are about to embark on this very worthy appeal. If you have any old shoe boxes and items to put into them (non-perishable), could you please give them to Mr Edwards so that the Year 7 students can start putting these together in order to bring happiness to young people in Eastern European countries. Items such as toiletries, educational items, toys or household goods will be gratefully received. Mock Exam Next week Year 11 students will be sitting Mock Exams, please check on ePortal for more details. Target Grades/Levels? Do you know your child’s target grade/level? Have you discussed them with your child? If the answer to these questions is no then ask your child to log on to ePortal so you can look at their target grades/levels and have a discussion with them about what they show. Energy Drinks banned from school We want to remind you that energy drinks are banned in school and will be confiscated. We are highly concerned with the health hazards they may cause, which may be especially worrisome for children with conditions such as ADHD, diabetes or heart conditions. Based on the labels on their cans, for example, some energy drinks contain as much as twice the caffeine as the stimulant NoDoz; most contain three times the caffeine found in caffeinated sodas. In general, and according to paediatricians, caffeine can disturb children's sleep, which can actually compound energy problems since sleep deprivation can make children even more listless and tired. Please help us by making sure your children do not take any of those drinks when going to school. See our Whole School Policy (in the Information Bank on our website) for more information. Future rugby star? One of our students, Matt John, is an exceptional student and has a passion for rugby. He is currently involved with London Irish RFC which involves him attending weekly coaching sessions. He captains the year 8 rugby team and has been training with the year 9 team this year. He also represents Gosport and Fareham RFC. Matt has represented the school in the local and area Cross country competitions as well as local athletics competitions. He was voted player of the season last year for the year 7 rugby team. We are very proud of him and wish him great success.

Staff at the College reported that the day was very successful and that our students were” lovely.” Thank you to all the staff who were involved in making this day so worthwhile. Feedback from the students was most complimentary and useful . The value of such experiences can be to help students decide what not to do as one student remarked “at least I now know I don’t want to be a chef- I was rubbish at it!” Students of the week Year 7: Penelope Buckley, for her infectious smile and her ability to cheer people up on a day to day basis, especially me!
