Newsletter Friday, 7th December 2012 Dear Parent, Carer With just two weeks of the Autumn term left before the Christmas break the pace at school continues. Year 11 Parents’ evening next week will be well attended and we thank all the parents who have booked to meet with their child’s teachers, to ensure they can support us in our uncompromising drive to make sure students continue to make rapid and sustained progress towards their exam success. It is a difficult and challenging world that our students will encounter and we want them all to have the best possible education background for them to be successful with their aspirations. Those students who left us in the summer will return on Wednesday evening for the presentation of certificates and staff and fellow students are looking forward to catching up on their news. Tickets have now gone on sale for the school production of ‘Hairspray’ which will take part during the last week of term. We do hope you will support the students and staff by attending what will be a very successful and popular show under the direction of Mrs Knight, Music Teacher. Nadine Powrie Headteacher Head Boy and Head Girl We are delighted to inform you that these prestigious roles have been allocated as follows: Head Boy Matthew Knibbs Head Girl Sophie Baldock Deputy Head Boy Joshua Chapman Deputy Head Girl Caitlin White Congratulations to them all. School Catering Facilities – Caterlink Parents will recall that earlier in the year the school changed their catering company to Caterlink. Now that the new service has been running for a few months their staff requested a meeting with student representatives to obtain their views on the provision. The meeting was very positive and the students were commended for their politeness and their excellent ideas which will be reviewed. Students were asked for their ideas for improvements and responded on behalf of their individual tutor groups. Food suggested:

Blueberry muffins, yazoo drinks, shakes, hot chocolate, tea and coffee, toast at break times with different toppings, more fruit bags, vending machines (not for chocolate or crisps), theme days and more vegetarian options. Students were also keen to see the return of sweet chilli burgers and a reduction in what they described as ’greasy’ foods.

Facilities:

The queuing system for food is to be reviewed. Students were reminded that there are several serving points where they can purchase their food and they do not have to use the main queue. Provision of more seating is to be explored and discussed with the school management team. Clearer labelling of food is to be provided (this has already been actioned).

On offer:

Each Wednesday there is now hot soup and pudding being served.

Newsletter Friday, 7th December 2012 Detentions -Important information for parents Under the Education Act 2011 the regulations for detentions were amended. Schools do not have to give parents 24 hours notice of detention. Detentions will be logged on the school e-portal system for parents to view. The school planners to be issued at the start of the spring term will reflect these changes. Governor News The Governor Achievement and Standards committee met on Tuesday and during the meeting received an update from Mr Cranstone, Deputy Headteacher, on the data tracking being used by the school. Ofsted in May commented that’ ‘The analysis, of student achievement is now rigorous, forensic and searching’ (Ofsted May 2012) . Since that inspection this analysis has now been improved further in the next stage of development of outstanding levels of progress for students. Governors are delighted with the work being done to ensure that your children perform exceptionally well. Elizabeth Webb, Chair of Governors Signing Choir Last week we told you about the signing choir performance at Eastleigh that Mrs Hinks from our HIRA Department was taking part in. We are pleased to inform you that they raised £247 for the Sonus charity who have previously funded opportunities for our hearing impaired students. Well done Mrs Hinks! PE News Year 5 & 6 Bench Ball Tournament On 27th November, Neville Lovett School held a bench ball festival for the year 5 and 6 pupils from our local primary schools. Eleven year 7 leadership academy students and 4 year 9 sports students were responsible for the smooth running and organisation of the event. The students worked tirelessly for the afternoon and were an absolute credit to the school. A primary school pupil who took part said ‘Our sports leader was really cool and helped us loads as a team, I can’t wait to come to Neville Lovett and maybe be a leader when I’m older’. The afternoon was a great success, the local primary students had great fun and the leaders were truly brilliant!. Miss Ayling Portchester 36 - Neville Lovett 33 Year 10 Boys Basketball: This was an excellent match to watch in which both teams gave so much in order to win. With the scores poised at 33-33 with 15 seconds to go, Portchester sunk a superb 3 pointer. The score ebbed and flowed throughout the 4 quarters, however, Portchester pipped us to the line in the dying seconds. The team all performed well - especially Danny Knee, Alex Boardman and Josh Roberts who sunk some great baskets. Well played guys. Portchester 18 - Neville Lovett 28 This was a great game of Basketball played at a frenetic pace throughout. Eventually the Neville Lovett girls got some form of defence in place and nullified most of the Portchester attacks. There were some great all round performances and points were spread amongst the team. Special mention to Allanah Curry for some great attacking play and some lovely baskets. Well done girls.
