Newsletter Friday, 8th February 2013 Dear Parent/Carer On Monday we held our Academy Consultation Evening for parents of our current students. The meeting was well attended with over 40 families represented. Next week we hold the consultation evening for parents in Year 5 and 6 and, following this, we will write to parents to provide feedback regarding the questions raised and to clarify any points that require further detail. It has been another busy week at school; students have welcomed a former GB Badminton player and a representative from National Schools Partnership, who spent a day with students who are interested in a career in engineering. The school also paid host to teachers from a school in Oxfordshire who came to see the outstanding teaching at Neville Lovett and to take ideas back to their own school to put into practice there. Nadine Powrie, Headteacher

Rock challenge A group of Year 7 students requested a meeting with Mrs Powrie at lunchtime on Monday. They attended the Conference Room with their Progress Leader, Mrs Hoggarth, and proceeded to present their well thought out ideas to raise funds to cover the cost of transport for our Rock Challenge entries this year. Their proposals were clearly presented and it has been agreed that there will be a non school uniform day on Thursday, 14th February 2013. The students involved are Atlanta Starkey, Katie Kemp, Katie Green, Lauren Jones, Paige Coultham and Paige Duffin. We trust that the school community will rally behind these students in their enterprising endeavours to raise funds. Their outstanding example of the schools 3rs of Respect, Resilience and Responsibility is to be commended. In addition to raising funds for Rock Challenge the girls have also given their time to assist with the production of the stage setting. In previous years Neville Lovett Community School has achieved much success in this popular event. Enterprise - Year 8 I am currently working with Suzanne Lewis from EBP on an enterprise initiative with some Year 8 students called MoneyMakers. They are trying to make a difference to schools and students out in West Africa. Each of the 3 teams are being given ÂŁ200 in order to use and try to make as much profit as possible - no point in investing in an ISA or children's savings account at 0.5% these days!! The teams are trying to come up with ideas to make as much money for this fabulous cause as possible. If you have any ideas, I would certainly welcome these and pass them onto the teams. It's alright being Peter Jones and buying up Jessops but with ÂŁ200 they have to be shrewd with their finances. We have until 30th June 2013, and the winning team stand to take home a mini IPad each - with 39 teams in all, we have a good chance. Mr Edwards, Progress Leader Year 8

Newsletter Friday, 8th February 2013 Governors — Reading Support A number of Governors have been helping selected students develop their reading skills. We all enjoy working on a one-to one-basis and it is a pleasure to witness these young people growing in confidence. During the course of the year we have noticed further benefits such as an expansion of their vocabulary and comprehension, along with greater confidence in mixing with their peers. It is amazing how many words appear in books that are no longer in daily conversation use. Here the adult can be of great help in clarifying. On the other hand there have been many occasions when my reader has needed to explain the characters in modern literature, particularly those that are related to some of the video games they play at home, as I haven’t slightest idea of their roles! For me, that really does sum up their learning, as it is a journey where we progress as we share our experiences with each other. What we now need are more volunteers for this. Can you help? It only takes about 30 minutes to an hour per week during term time. You will be doing so much to help a young person’s achievement. If you think you might have the time to listen then please do contact the school for more information. Suzie Hoggarth (s.hoggarth@nevillelovett.hants.sch.uk). Thank you. PE News On Tuesday 6th February, Neville Lovett School were extremely honoured to have Anthony Clark, exOlympian, world series and 100 x England Badminton player visit our school for the morning as part of the ‘Sky Sports Living for Sport’ initiative. Anthony worked closely with our year 7 leadership academy students, giving an inspirational talk and presentation about his life experiences and dedication to badminton. Following this, the pupils were engrossed in a practical badminton session, learning basic skills as well as being able to see first-hand, Anthony’s excellent talent. The pupils were amazed by his ability and truly inspired to work hard in order to achieve their full potential both in sport and everyday life. For the final part of the day, Anthony worked with another group of GCSE PE students, motivating them to work hard and never give up, invaluable for their GCSE studies. We are looking forward to our next visit from Anthony in the near future where he will be mentoring our Leadership Academy students further through his detailed programme.

Year 10 Boys Rugby - The year 10 rugby team put in another good performance in difficult conditions to beat Bay House school 38-12. Alex Boardman made his debut on the wing and put in a very good performance - he even managed to kick a conversion! Shay Bradley led the team well playing out of position at inside centre. Danny Knee made many penetrating runs and has finally learnt to offload the ball at the right time....progress! In all another successful night, 34 students playing competitive sport. Year 7 Girls Football - The year 7 girls football team played their first fixture this evening with a convincing 7-5 win against Crofton. Jazzie Gannon was top goal scorer with 4 goals and Hope Herron was voted woman of the match by the other team.
