School Report Autumn Term 2012

Special Edition Autumn Term 2012 Dear Parent, Carer I am delighted to introduce you to the first of our Neville Lovett Community School end of term newsletters. Parents who receive our increasingly popular weekly newsletter will appreciate that space is limited and this publication provides the opportunity to reflect on some of the stories and events of the past term. We returned after the summer break to the excellent news that the school had once again achieved GCSE results above the national average and we were very proud of the students who worked so hard to achieve these results. This was the second successive year the school results record was broken. The students achieved 67% A* - C (Including English and Maths). The Mayor and Mayoress of Fareham attended our Certificate Presentation Evening to present the awards. They were delighted with the turnout and helped to make the occasion extra special. We held a very successful Enterprise Week for aspiring entrepreneurs in year 7, 8 and 9 which raised funds for our adopted charity Brain Tumour Research. Students also had a non uniform day for Children in Need that was very well supported. For the coming term work will continue in our uncompromising drive towards becoming an outstanding school. Ofsted in May 2012 recommended that we “review and improve systems for communicating with parents”. This term we have held two parents coffee mornings/afternoons for year 9 and 7 and there will be follow up meetings with those who attended in the Spring Term. Coffee mornings for parents in year 8 and 10 will take place before the Easter Break. We also added an additional Year 11 parents evening so all parents are kept informed of their child’s progress and how they can support them to attain the grades they deserve. Raising the aspirations of our students remains a focus for the school and this term we welcomed Oxford University to address students on the opportunities for them to attend this University. We already have a former student going through the rigorous application and interview process and anticipate being able to share good news with you on his progress next year. All students should be encouraged to aspire to achieve their dreams and this is embedded as part of our school philosophy. As Dr Russell Quaglia of the Quaglia Institute says “To be able to dream about the future, while being inspired in the present to reach those dreams”. Neville Lovett Community School remain committed to providing our students with the very best education to enable them to make their way in an increasingly difficult and challenging world. I would like to thank staff, students, governors and parents for their dedication to the school. I look forward to seeing you in school in 2013. Nadine Powrie Headteacher

Special Edition Autumn Term 2012 — Trips Chateau Beaumont On 26th October 2012, 53 students (Year 8 and 10) left Fareham for fun and learning in France. They explored historical towns: Laval, Mont St Michel, Fougeres and its medieval castle. The trip provided an excellent opportunity to practice their French speaking skills. Activities such as Aeroball and archery took place and a visit to the Eiffel Tower and Disneyland, Paris added to the adventure. A parent wrote to Miss Ameaux to say “A huge thank you to you and the other members of staff for the fabulous time Katie had on the Chateau Beaumont trip. When she got home last night she was buzzing with all her adventures! I really appreciate the commitment such a trip involves and the fact that you have all given up part of your half term to enable the students to participate in this. The regular tweets were a great way of keeping in touch too – thank you!” (Year 8 Parent).

Looking Forwards On Wednesday 5th December 2012 we welcomed two French teachers, Marie Hervieu and Anne Dambry to our school. The purpose of the visit was to discuss projects and exchanges between our two schools. Indeed, since October, our Year 10 and Year 11 students have been involved in exchanging letters with French students from a secondary school in Rouen ( Normandy) called Lycée Vallee du Cailly. Our two visitors were very complimentary about our school. They really enjoyed their day touring the school, visiting different lessons and speaking to students about their experience at Neville Lovett. The day was very productive as we planned to take a small group of students to France as part of an exchange in March 2013 for 4 days. Our students will have the opportunity to attend lessons in a French school and stay with a French family to experience the differences of culture and education. More information will follow in January. Miss Ameaux, Head of MFL

Special Edition Autumn Term 2012 — Visitors

Ali Sparkes On Thursday, 15th November 2012 we welcomed the popular children’s author Ali Sparkes. The purpose of the visit was for Year 6, 7 and 8 students to hear how a writer became inspired to write and how this skill can be born in everyone. Having excellent literacy skills is the key to academic success and these enrichment days are vital in encouraging students to pick up a book and read. We were delighted on the day to be joined by pupils from Wallisdean Junior School and Redlands Primary School.

Andy Briggs Another popular children’s author joined us on 15th December 2012. Andy is the only author who has ever been granted permission to write books based on the Tarzan legend. He also produces interactive books where you can follow the stories on line. Any entertained students with stories of his travels to Hollywood where his scripts have been turned into movies and TV shows. 85 pupils from Harrison Primary School joined us on the day for a very entertaining talk which ended with a fun jungle survival quiz. Andy delighted students by signing copies of his book for them. In the afternoon he participated in a workshop with selected students.

Oxford University Martin Bell, Schools Outreach from St Edmund Hall, Oxford University visited to talk to students about the opportunities available to them at this prestigious university. We are planning to take a group of students with their parents for a day at Oxford University in the Spring/Summer term.

Parents Not all our visitors are teachers, authors or celebrities. Parents are always welcome to attend any events being run by the school. In September the Science Department held a ‘Bring a Parent to Science Evening. This was the second such event within school and proved very popular. Keep checking the weekly newsletter for further opportunities to experience lift at Neville Lovett Community School from the student perspective.

Special Edition Autumn Term 2012 — Students Summer Success We started the Autumn term with the excellent news that our students had broken the school’s GCSE record for the second successive year. Congratulations to the year group who produced these outstanding results and set the benchmark for future students to aspire to exceed.

Certificate Presentation Evening On 12th December our former year 11 students joined friends, family and staff to receive their certificates. The certificates were presented by the Mayor of Fareham, Councillor Dennis Steadman. The Mayoress was also in attendance.

Congratulations and well done to our amazing students. Shay Bradley Shay Bradley has been selected for the U15 Hampshire Rugby Squad. This will be a squad of 30 players which has been selected from around 200 players who attended the first 3 trials. This is a massive achievement for him considering he only started rugby with Mr Collins, Head of PE, 2 years ago. Well done Shay! Robert Aslet Congratulations to Robert Aslet, Year 11, who won the Skillforce award this year. As a result of his success Robert travelled to London to receive his award from the Duke of Cambridge. Well done Robert!

Special Edition Autumn Term 2012 —Extra-curricular ‘Hairspray’ Mrs Knight, Music Teacher directed our fantastic students over two nights as they presented their version of hit musical ‘Hairspray’. The student performances were outstanding and, despite a couple of microphone hitches, the singing was fabulous. Congratulations to all those who took part in this performance including the stage hands, lighting technicians and those who helped on the door. If tickets sell as well for the next show we may have to hire a bigger venue!

Enterprise Week Our first very successful Enterprise Week took place from Friday, 5th October to Friday, 12th October 2012. Students involved were from Year 7, 8 and 9 Each tutor was given a initial £20 and with their tutor groups had to develop a business plan to turn this £20 into as much profit as possible in just one week. The overall winners were 9U who were ably led by their tutor Mrs Knight. They raised an amazing £124.50 ‘This has been a very enjoyable experience and I am so proud of my groups efforts! They really did work hard to have a successful business! Mrs Knight, Tutor Year 9U A total of £515.19 Was sent to the school’s adopted charity Well done to all who took part!

Children in Need We held a non uniform day for Children in Need and student raised an impressive £635.32.

Special Edition Autumn Term 2012 — Extra-curricular After School Activities At the end of the school day the school holds a wide and varied programme of extra-curricular activities. There is homework club, PE activities, Art Club, STEM Club to name just a few. All these clubs are well attended and proving very popular with students. We are delighted to share some images from the last term with you here.

Primary School Extra –Curricular Opportunities In November the Science team opened their doors to local primary school children to attend a lava lamp session. Students attended from Redlands Primary School, Wallisdean Junior School, Harrison Primary and St Judes. They explored lava lamps on the school Ipads before moving to the Science block to make their very own Lava Lamps. Students as young as Year 4 attended and all had a wonderful time - we hope to see them back at Neville Lovett again very soon.
