THE NEVILLE LOVETT COMMUNITY SCHOOL

DRUGS EDUCATION POLICY The school provides a planned drug education curriculum as part of P.S.H.C.E. programme that reflects the knowledge and understanding, attitudes and personal and social skills. The term “drug” is used to include I) illegal substances ii) Substances which are legal and can be misused. In this context, pupils need to know that drug misuse is not simply a matter of breaking the law, but also a moral issue regarding potential harm to one’s own health and the repercussions which affect friends and family. Drug education at Neville Lovett will: • • • • • • • •

Enable pupils to make healthy, informed choices by increasing knowledge, exploring their own and other people’s attitudes and developing and practising skills Promote positive attitudes towards healthy lifestyles Provide accurate information about substances Increase understanding about the implications and possible consequences of drug use and misuse widen understanding about related health and social issues, e.g sex and sexuality, crime, HIV and AIDS Encourage an understanding for those experiencing or likely to experience substance use Seek to minimise the risks users and potential users face Enable young people to identify sources of appropriate personal support.

It will build on the knowledge; understanding and skills gained in Key Stage 1 and 2 and will be developed at an appropriate level with each year group. The Schemes of Work are stored in the Citizenship office and are available if required. The drug education programme will be delivered within the P.S.H.C.E. course by trained staff. They will be supported as part of their professional development. The school actively co-operates with other agencies such as community police, social services, the LEA and health and drug agencies to deliver its commitment to drugs education.
