Homework Policy

THE NEVILLE LOVETT COMMUNITY SCHOOL HOMEWORK POLICY

Introduction Homework plays a valuable part in a student’s education as it offers an opportunity to learn in ways which are independent of the teacher and as such encourages personal commitment and self discipline. It encourages students • • • •

to use sources of information and materials not found in the classroom to complete work started in school or to practise skills learned in class to complete tasks in accordance with their abilities to understand and adhere to deadlines

It also allows parents (and other adults) to take an active interest in their child’s schoolwork. Parents are asked by letter and on the School website to support the staff in seeing that homework is done well and that the best possible conditions are available at home for its completion. Setting homework. • • • • •

All students are issued with homework timetables All curriculum areas set homework. Homework for all subjects is posted on the VLE section of the school website, it is also recorded by the student in their planner Students and parents have access to the homework tasks through their personal logins The nature and length of homework tasks is determined by the student’s year group and ability It should always be integrated in and relevant to the current schemes of work. Homework should reinforce and compliment learning in class.

Monitoring homework • • •

Heads of Department should ensure that homework is set and posted on the VLE according to the homework timetable. Heads of Department are responsible for ensuring that new colleagues gain familiarity with this process as part of their induction. Tutors, Heads of House and Senior Leaders may need to use this record of homework when talking to parents or during mentoring sessions with students.

Length of homework tasks As a guide, each pupil in Year 7 should receive at least one hour’s homework per night. There should be a gradual increase through Years 8 and 9 to one and a half hours and key stage 4 students can expect to complete at least 2 hours of homework per night. Staff should always take into account the ability of the students when setting tasks. Feedback Teachers should always give students feedback on their homework tasks and this should be in line with the assessment policies of the departments and the school. Where possible departmental staff should seek the view of students on the relevance of homework tasks and how they help the students to learn effectively. Completion of homework An ICT suite and the library will be available at the end of school for students who wish to complete homework Students are expected to complete all tasks set for them, should they fail to do this the teacher should use sanctions in line with the behaviour policy of the school. Parents and tutor must be informed if a pupil regularly fails to complete homework assignments. A teacher may choose to do this through a standard detention letter, by writing a comment in the planner or by phoning home. Regular liaison between subject staff, parents and tutors will help students reach the required standard.
