THE NEVILLE LOVETT COMMUNITY SCHOOL
INDUCTION OF NEW YEAR 7 STUDENTS POLICY (NON STATUTORY) Principles The Neville Lovett Community School aims ‘to ensure a smooth transition, both academically and socially, from Junior School to Secondary School for all of its students. New students come to Neville Lovett School from three main feeder primaries: Wallisdean Junior School, Ranvilles Junior School and Redlands Primary School. Small numbers also come from up to 12 other local schools. Their induction therefore aims to offer support and guidance which will •
build effectively on their different past achievements and identify student abilities and place them correctly
•
enable students to settle quickly and become full and responsible members of their new school
•
establish good relationships between the students, their peers and the staff
•
develop an appreciation in the students of the value of taking greater responsibility for planning, organising and carrying out their work
•
identify specific learning difficulties and provide additional support
•
understand school and classroom rules and procedures
•
establish good working relationships with parents.
There are four major elements of the Induction programme: •
Year 5 taster days
•
Year 6 Induction Day and Parents’ Evening
•
First day of Autumn Term
•

The new Year 7 group follows their timetable on this day after an initial meeting with their tutor. Form tutors work with the tutor groups. This time is organised by the new Head of Year. The new Year 7 is the only cohort of students in school on this day. Year 7 Parent/Tutor Meeting This takes place in the second week of October. It is organised by the Head of Year. The form tutors gather initial information on students to discuss with parents. Parents have the opportunity to voice their positive thoughts or concerns to tutors. Information Transfer A key part of successful transition involves prompt and comprehensive transfer of information from Junior Schools to Secondary Schools. • •
Key Stage 2 data Personal and academic information
The Common Transfer Form and the information it contains should be sought from the Junior Schools promptly by the SIMS Administrator under the guidance of the SIMS Coordinator. It should be available two to three weeks before the end of the Summer Term. It should contain basic information on the students, along with KS2 test results and teacher assessments. They should be made available to Heads of Department (English, Mathematics and Science) for setting purposes through Assessment Manager 6. The Head of Year and Assistant Headteacher KS3 visit the three feeder Junior Schools in the second half of the Summer Term to introduce themselves, talk about Neville Lovett School and answer questions. The Head of Year visits all of the schools feeding Neville Lovett School to gather personal and academic information on all of the students. This information is used to allocate students to tutor groups. It is also shared with tutors and relevant teachers in the latter half of the Summer Term. The Learning Support Co-ordinator visits each of the Junior Schools at this time to gather information on students with Special Educational Needs. The Hearing Impaired Resources Area (HIRA) has a separate procedure for the induction of HI students.
Testing and Setting Students On entry all students are tested for Reading Age and Spelling Age. In addition, all students take the MIDYIS test. /mnt/conversion/splitting/100913103146-91fe53ffe81545939084ddee9b8bd2fc.file 3

Additional KS2 to KS3 Links A member of each curriculum area is responsible for liaising with each of the Junior Schools over curriculum matters. A member of the Governing Body maintains links with each of the three feeder schools. Termly meetings of the Headteachers of the cluster schools take place to discuss cluster issues.
