Spring Term In response to the many suggestions made by parents and stakeholders we have changed the look and content of our newsletter. We hope you enjoy the new format. Students, staff and governors have welcomed the return to a Year group structure within the school. Tutor lessons are much more focussed and sharp, responding clearly to the needs of our students. Year 11 students are now taking their formal end of year exams and we have endeavoured to provide as much support as possible. Members of the school teaching staff have provided revision days and have foregone some of their Easter Holidays to provide extra revision sessions to give your children the con idence to succeed. Ofsted visited our Maths Department this term and were pleased with the progress being made. Their report stated ‘There is a palpable sense of teachers enjoying developing fresh approaches and re ining existing methods …… they are already having a positive effect on students’ achievement. Your vision, as a new Headteacher, for the whole school is re lected in the drive forwards in the mathematics department’ (Ofsted 2011). My Coffee mornings with parents have been well received and will continue. Parents enjoy the tour of the school and the opportunity to meet with me and hear what the school aims to achieve in the next few years. The next meeting with invited parents will be in the afternoon on Thursday, 12 May 2011 from 4.00 to 5.00 pm so that working parents have the opportunity to attend. I hold weekly G10 meetings with different students to gain feedback directly from students about how the school supports them and where the school needs to improve. Students have reported that the return to Year Groups is bene icial. There are a number of areas of the school which students feel would bene it from new equipment and the revamp of E block should address some of these issues. The Student Support Services department is now fully operational. They provide support for small groups or individual students in recognition of their individual learning and emotional needs. The Student Services desk is open during tutor time and at lunch. Young carers attend the suite on Mondays and Thursdays. PC Mangan, the safer schools of icer we share with Henry Cort, is based in the suite on Tuesday and Thursday. Graeme Bradshaw has been appointed as the school SENCO and will work closely with Suzie Hoggarth. The school continues to make progress to improve the outcomes for our students to enable them to achieve their full potential both academically and personally. The restructuring process ended on 31 March 2011 and a number of staff have been appointed to the newly created roles within the school. We also welcome 14 new permanent teaching staff for September in English, Maths, Science and Music. I hope you all enjoy a relaxing Easter Break. Thank you for your continued support. SCHOOL UNIFORM The Board of Governors has agreed that with effect from September 2011 all students will wear a shirt and tie under their existing black school sweatshirt. The shirts do not have a logo and can be obtained from any supplier for as little as £7.00 for 3 shirts. In the long term this should work out more economical for parents as the current red polo shirts are £9.00 +. The new ties will be available to purchase from the school at an introductory price of £2.00 each. The school are currently investigating opening a Uniform Shop on site. YEAR 10 MAKEUP

MP VISITS THE SCHOOL

I am pleased to announce that following discussions with staff and students we have decided to allow Year 10 girls the opportunity to wear makeup.

On 11 March 2011 Mark Hoban, MP visited the school to meet with the headteacher and to tour the school site. Mr Hoban was very complimentary about the school.

The girls who were consulted suggested a trial period of 2 weeks and were keen to ensure that people wear discreet/natural makeup.

Mr Hoban has kindly agreed to attend the Year 11 Awards Evening in the Autumn and has offered to arrange for a group of students to attend the Houses of Parliament and hopefully have a ‘Question Time’. Further details will follow.

Therefore, after the Easter break we will permit the wearing of makeup in year 10 provided it is discreet. If students respond in a sensible way we can look to this becoming a permanent change to our guidelines. Mrs V. Campbell - Head of Year 10

MEDICINE From after the Easter holiday, we shall no longer administer non prescribed medicines and painkillers such as paracetemol. We advise parents to make their own arrangements should they feel it necessary. Andrew Campbell-Deputy Headteacher

STAFF INTRODUCTIONS Head of English My name is Mr Giles and I am joining Neville Lovett from Woodlands Community College in Hare ield, Southampton where I work under the title of Intervention and Progress Leader in English. I am truly privileged and absolutely thrilled to be appointed as the Head of English at NLS and I am looking forward to ensuring the best possible progress for all students who are taught in our department. I believe progress only comes from complete engagement in the learning process and it is my aim to ensure that all of our students

School Receptionist - Julie Veale My name is Julie Veale and I am looking forward to starting my new role at Neville Lovett on 1st April 2011, I have a feeling that April Fool’s Day is going to be a good omen for me! Having now received and signed for the new role contract, I am happy that this is no joke! I was given the tour of Neville Lovett on the day I came for the interview and found the school to have a really good feel, I also found everyone I met to be very friendly and welcoming, thank you. I am currently working at Park Community School and inish there on 31st March 2011 and the very

become, or continue to be, excited and enthused by the diverse and fascinating subject that is English. Prior to becoming a teacher, I served for a good number of years in the Royal Navy as a Chief Petty Of icer in charge of warfare ratings at sea. I served on ships including HMS Exeter, York and Gloucester in lots of countries and seas around the globe, completing my career as an instructor of Leadership and Management at HMS Collingwood. I have an absolute passion for the theatre and for literature which I believe, can be instrumental in

broadening experiences and extending horizons thus helping create additional opportunities for young people. I spend most of my spare time with my wife and two young boys, enjoying activities such as camping, kayaking and walking. Alongside these, I thoroughly enjoy sport of any kind – in particular rugby and football. I was there, unsure who to cheer, but nevertheless enjoying watching Y911 boys beat Woodlands at rugby in quite an impressive fashion. I do look forward to meeting and working with you all very soon.

next day it’s back to school, albeit a new school. I have worked at Park since February 2010 (although I was there as a student between 19701975) and in that time have learnt some new skills which I am looking forward to bringing with me, before joining Park I was worked in banking/ inance for over 30 years, this is now my new career and I can’t wait.

I will see you all on the 1st for the start of a new chapter in my life and as I said before I am really looking forward to becoming part of the team at school and doing my bit to put Neville Lovett irmly on the map.

I live in Clan ield and with my partner Neil and my youngest son who is 15 and in his last year at Oaklands Catholic School. My eldest son is 23 and currently lives in Guildford, as he is in his last year at Surrey University.

COMMUNICATIONS A major issue for many people associated with a school is communication. I have been asked in my new role to look at the low of information between school and the wider community. Feedback and suggestions from parents regarding how we can improve communication is most welcome and I would be delighted to hear from you on h.whale@nevillelovett.hants.sch.uk. Please also remember to let me

know when we get it right! Our new look newsletter is intended to keep you better informed. The termly letter from the Headteacher contains valuable information on what is happening at Neville Lovett. Our school website is another resource we would encourage you to look at on a regular basis. Helen Whale Marketing Assistant

SCHOOL RADIO When I was interviewed by students prior to my appointment, they expressed a keen interest in having a school radio station. I am pleased to report that Wave 105 have agreed to allow a number of our students to visit them to see the station in action. They have also offered to advise on the project. There will be a survey of students and this exciting project should start to take shape during the Summer Term. Nadine Powrie

SOLENT SOUTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY AIM HIGHER DAY—YEAR 9 “I thoroughly enjoyed my day at Southampton University. The taster sessions were fun and interesting. It gave me an insight into how enjoyable and rewarding it can be and when we had to design our own university it made me realize what I would like out of a university. Overall it was a very good day and I would de initely go again.” Sophie Baldock 9E All the students who have attended the day, and there were twenty seven in all, have said what a great day they had. It was their chance to experience what it is like to go to University. From what I’ve also heard one memorable feature is also the free lunch. But remember if you do go then you have a lot to live up to because Lizzi Brazier the coordinator for the day emailed to say, ‘Your students were lovely and really enthusiastic in all areas.’ So a big thank you to the students that went, Jenny Firth and Wendy Dawkins who accompanied them and Solent Southampton University who organised the day Nic Clouting—Head of Year 9

FOCUS ON RE March was designated to “Celebrating RE in Hampshire“ and to mark this County initiative the RE department put a display in Student Services of examples of excellent work produced by students. The display also includes a letter from the County Inspector for RE congratulating the department on our exam success when compared with National data. The current Year 10 Option students are sitting a GCSE exam this summer and to help them understand how Jews express their faith they visited the Reading Hebrew Synagogue in February and had an excellent day together.

Students in Year 8 appreciated a visit from a local Christian explaining his Christian vision of life. Other work in our department centres on Health and Social Care and Children’s Care, Learning and Development. The Year 11s demonstrated their commitment to their studies by coming into school for extra study time on 21st/22nd Feb and are able to do extra catch up time in the Easter holidays on 11th April. The Year 10 CCLD students have been occupied doing coursework following a successful week on placement in local Early Years settings in January.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS CONTACTING THE SCHOOL

Parents and carers will have noticed that the school has changed to an automated telephone service. This has been implemented to help parents reach more easily the staff they need to speak to. Each Head of Year now has their own extension and if they cannot take the call straight away please leave a message - they will contact you as soon as they are able to. CONTACTING TEACHING STAFF

Please remember that our staff teach during the day and have lunch and break duties. It is therefore not always possible for you to speak to them immediately. The majority of calls will be returned after the end of the school day. Your understanding is appreciated. STUDENT ABSENCE

If your child will be away from school please let us know in advance or, if they are ill, call us as soon as possible in the morning. We now send text messages to parents if their child is not in school and if we are already aware of their absence, you will not receive this text. E mAIL

We have a number of email addresses for the school. Parents wishing to contact the school by email should use: adminof ice@nevillelovett.han ts.sch.uk. Parents are advised that if they use any other email address they may experience a delay in response.

Year 6 Parents We will be offering students joining us in September the opportunity to spend a whole week with us in June familiarising themselves with the school layout and their timetable. This is an exciting new initiative which will hopefully remove some of the apprehension some students experience as they approach the move to ‘Big School’. We thank the Headteachers of Redlands, Wallisdean and Ranvilles for their help in making this possible. Nadine Powrie
