POLICY ON PERSONAL, SOCIAL, HEALTH AND CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION Our policy’s foundations lie in the National Curriculum for England and Wales two aims that 1. The school curriculum should aim to provide opportunities for all students to learn and to achieve. 2. The school curriculum should aim to promote students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and prepare all students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life. (The National Curriculum for England and Wales 2000) At Neville Lovett we believe that through a programme of Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education at Key stages 3and 4 we will help students to: • Lead confident, healthy and responsible lives as individuals and active members of society, developing skills such as communication, enquiry and participation • Gain practical knowledge and skills to help them live healthily and deal with the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues they face as they approach adulthood. • Improve their motivation and deepen their understanding by providing them with opportunities to reflect on their experiences, and how they are developing. • Understand and manage responsibly a wider range of relationships as they mature • Show respect for the diversity of, and differences between, people, challenging racism and promoting equal opportunities. • Develop their wellbeing and self-esteem, encouraging belief in their ability to succeed and enabling them to take responsibility for their learning and future choice of courses and career. • Build on their own experiences and on work at Key Stage 1 and 2. • Develop a deeper understanding of what an active citizen is, and how they can become one. • Become informed, critical and responsible citizens, aware of their duties and rights • Develop key skills. Our P.S.H.C.E. curriculum also complies with the government’s statutory and nonstatutory guidelines and requirements, and will enable students to:

Explore the values and beliefs, which influence individuals and their relationships with others and the wider world Respond to their present lives and prepare for work and adult life Emphasise practical activities, decision-making and learning through experience Develop community links Provide relevant ways in which skills may be developed

Precise details on the curriculum’s content for both Key Stage 3 and 4 can be found in the Schemes of Work held in the Citizenship office in A Block. Parents will be informed when students are completing work on sensitive issues such Sex and Relationship Education and Drug Education. The P.S.H.C.E curriculum will be taught by mainly specialist teachers as a separate subject with its own curricular time. Teaching staff will be aware of school guidelines relating to confidentiality and the handling of sensitive and controversial issues. All students will be taught P.S.H.C.E. and the teaching will be appropriate to their needs. The programme will reflect and be responsive to the needs of the local community. Agencies, which support the community such as health, local government, business and voluntary organisations, will be consulted and used in the preparation and delivery of aspects of the course. We welcome visitors who: • Support the values of the school • Are committed to equal opportunities • Are clear about any relevant legislation or codes of practise • Are clear about school policy • Are clear about how their contributions fits with the whole programme • Have agreed the methodology they will use • Use agreed resources • Show sensitivity when responding to questions • Understand and work within procedures for child protection • Accepts the constraints, which pertain within a school setting. Visitors will be supported in: • Understanding school values, expectations and procedures • An Awareness of relevant legislation or codes of practice. • Understanding the parameters in which they operate • Understanding the differences in relation to confidentiality • Behaviour management • Understanding the ways in which students with SEN are supported in their learning. Assessment and reporting will occur on a regular basis in line with school policy. Students will be active in assessing their own learning and the setting of personal targets every term. These will be used when teaching staff report to parents.
