THE NEVILLE LOVETT COMMUNITY SCHOOL
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION POLICY (NON STATUTORY)
Religious Education at Neville Lovett School, at KS3, is delivered in accordance with the Authority’s agreed syllabus, ‘Living Difference’. The syllabus is intended to provide the basis of effective teaching and learning in religious education and, as a result, enhance understanding and collaboration across the diversity of belief and practice within our local community and the wider world. We commend the purpose of the authority’s syllabus, which is: To support pupils in developing their own coherent patterns of values and principles, and to support their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. We share the authority’s commitment to an education that values religious and cultural diversity. At KS4 all pupils follow the Welsh Board’s short GCSE syllabus as part of their core curriculum. Both the Authority’s syllabus and the Welsh Board’s syllabus are non-denominational in character. They involve pupils in a personal quest for meaning the purpose in life with an exploration of Christianity and other faiths. Parents are welcome to see a copy of the County syllabus which is always available in the school, as is the Religious Education Department’s scheme of work. Parents who wish to exercise their right to withdraw their child from Religious Education are invited, by letter, to contact the Head of Department when their child joins the school. Parents who exercise their right to withdraw their children from Religious Education will be made aware that it is their responsibility to provide alternative private study material for them, which is relevant to their own beliefs.
