Houses built today can have all the features that go towards energy efficiency - cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, double glazing with thermal glass, hot and cold water pipe and tank insulation, floor insulation, draught-proofing, thermostatically controlled, self-regulating central heating, energy saving lighting and appliances. Of course you can adapt your old property but what would it cost? Loft insulation alone can cost over £400 and will take up to five years for the cost to be recovered in fuel savings. In a new home with all the insulation installed, you can start saving right away and the same goes for all the other, cost and energy efficient features. If you haven’t thought of moving to a brand new property for any other reason, consider doing so for the savings alone it will represent. Add to that the comfort and satisfaction of knowing you are the only resident your property has ever had and think really seriously about it. And when you do decide to go for that brand new property it could prove easier than you had ever thought possible. Many developers operate a part-exchange system whereby they take your old home off your hands and facilitate your move to the new home with hardly any delay. Considering the hassle that is moving house, that alone should give you pause for very serious thought.
