TRANSPORT
hether you have your heart set on a horse and carriage, modern or vintage car or even a classic camper van, your wedding transport should be as special as every other aspect of the day. Before committing yourself, there are a few things to consider, including budget. Spending a lot on transport may mean having to make sacrifices elsewhere. The distance you live from your wedding venues should have a bearing on your choice. A horse and carriage is lovely, but not if you live miles away. You need to know exactly what time period you will have the vehicle for, just in case anything is delayed – the last thing you want to hear is that the driver is booked for another event and needs to leave. Transport choice may depend on how many people it needs to cater for. Maybe you are just concerned with getting the bride, father and bridesmaids there. Or, if you want to transport the whole wedding party you could arrange group transport, such as a traditional bus. The bridegroom and groomsmen often settle for a taxi to the wedding to keep costs down. If the ceremony is in a different location from the reception, then it’s likely this will incur extra costs. The bride and bridegroom need to arrive at the reception together, meaning the bride’s father will need another means of getting there. Plus, the bridesmaids often travel to the reception with their parents or partners, and may be happy to use their own cars.
The weather will always have a bearing on the smooth running of your day and it’s important that you take it into consideration when choosing transport. An open-top vehicle may seem a good option, but what will happen if it’s cold or raining? Hopefully your hire company will be prepared for these eventualities, but if you really don’t trust the weather, then open-top is best avoided to prevent extra stress. If you have a colour scheme and theme for your wedding, don’t spoil it with hastily-chosen transport. Consider the colour of the vehicle and ask if your hire company will be adding accessories such as ribbons and if they can be matched to your colour scheme. The driver should look the part too. Many have vast experience of weddings and know how to present themselves in a professional manner. Find out what they will be wearing and perhaps suggest them having a matching buttonhole to the rest of the wedding party. Make sure the company you have booked has contingency plans for any unforeseen mishaps. If the wedding car breaks down you need to be sure you will still get there somehow. You should be able to get all arrangements in writing to avoid mix-ups. Also check details including whether champagne and flowers come as part of the package. Little touches make all the difference. Finally, cheap may not be the best option. Low cost may also mean low quality, so try to choose a company that someone has recommended.

WEDDING JEWELLERY Choosing a wedding ring might seem a more straightforward task than selecting an engagement ring, but it still involves some careful thought. The choice of wedding band is usually dictated by the engagement ring, with the couple often opting for similar styles. However, if they have different preferences this is just as acceptable. A yellow gold wedding ring is the traditional choice. The purest is 24ct, but this is also the softest variety, so is not generally recommended for wedding bands. The less pure but harder and therefore more durable 18ct and 14ct are a better choice A white gold wedding ring will complement any silver or platinum jewellery you may have already. A platinum wedding ring is another popular choice, and is highly resistant to damage. It’s much rarer than gold. and is therefore more expensive, but a platinum wedding ring will last a lifetime. A titanium wedding ring is a more modern choice since it is only relatively recently that this striking greyish metal has been used for jewellery. It is extremely durable and can be carved without losing its strength. When it comes to the shape of the wedding band, one of the main considerations is how it sits with an engagement ring. If the engagement ring is straight-edged, a classic, straight-edged wedding band will sit snugly next to it. However, the gemstone setting in some engagement rings will not accommodate a straightedged wedding band. In this case you could either wear your engagement a n d wedding rings on

different hands, or opt for a shaped wedding ring to sit well with the engagement ring. Many shaped styles can be bought off the shelf. Otherwise, a good jeweller can custom-design a wedding band to sit perfectly with your engagement ring. This makes it even more special, as it is unique to you. Nowadays couples often favour jewel-set wedding rings, especially if they have chosen not to have an engagement ring. If you like this idea you should consider the harder stones, such as diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds, as time takes its toll on softer varieties. Diamondset wedding rings are the most popular option. Couples often want to have their wedding date engraved on the inside of their wedding rings and sometimes there is room for other sentiments too. If you are doing this, make sure you write down exactly what you want inside your ring, and ask your jeweller what font or style will be used. If you are not buying off the shelf, be sure to allow plenty of time for your bands to be ready. Also, be sure to get advice on correct sizing. Families sometimes pass down wedding rings, so this may be an option for you. The most important thing is to choose rings that you and your partner love. Don’t worry about other people’s choices, but do ask around and look in jewellery shops, in magazines and online for inspiration. Other jewellery for the wedding day should reflect the outfits, hairstyles and preferences of the parties involved. From classic pearls and family heirlooms to minimalist modern classics, the choice is yours.

FLOWERS AND THEMES wedding theme can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. However, too much of a theme can overshadow the real purpose of a wedding and cast the couple into the shade. And it can be very costly.
So, instead of picking a specific time, event, or story, you can: • Choose a feeling: Do you want your wedding to be casual, formal, romantic, rustic, fun? What defines you most as a couple? • Select common design elements: find motifs, textures, fonts, and materials that embody the overall feeling of the wedding. • Stick to your personal style: Do you consider yourself modern or traditional? Do you have a classic sense of style? • Take into account where your wedding is going to be held: Your ceremony and reception venue says a lot about your wedding. Are you going to take advantage of an outdoor setting, or a more traditional location?
Flowers play a main part in any wedding theme, so they should enhance everything about your big day, from complementing the bride’s dress to beautifying the venue. And they can smell wonderful too. When choosing flowers, think about which will be in season, as they will be at their most naturally beautiful and fragrant – although popular bridal flowers such as lilies and roses are available year-round. It’s important your flower arrangements suit the venue, so it’s worth putting in some research before selecting flower types and display size. Check with registration offices about how much you are able to personalise the space with flowers; for church weddings, there is plenty of scope for flower arrangements, but always check which areas you are allowed to use. Whatever your theme, the floral look should work in harmony with the overall colour scheme, and so flowers can be a great place to start when drawing inspiration for your big day.

WEDDING CAKES
T
raditionally, wedding cakes were tiered rich fruit cakes covered with thick white icing.
And while the classic white tower is still the cake of choice for many couples, these days there is a world of possibilities open to couples who want something completely different. The wedding cake is a statement of your style just as much as every other aspect of your wedding, and there are endless ways to express it.
Dessert table If you really can’t settle on a style of cake, then a dessert table could be the answer. This can be anything from a selection of cupcakes to a whole range of mini desserts, arranged on a table as simply or elaborately as you like. Cheese cake For something completely different, how about a cake made out of whole cheese rounds? By using a range of cheeses, you will be able to suit most palettes, and by adding some fresh fruit you will cater for those with a sweet tooth too.
Some of the most popular wedding cake trends for 2017 have elements of the traditional cake, while others don’t even include cake. Whatever your choice, the wedding cake is a focal point of your reception, and one of the most fun elements to choose. Here are a few popular trends for 2017. Semi-naked cakes Semi-naked cakes are covered in thin layer of buttercream, leaving visible layers of sponge showing through. They suit white wedding themes, and are a modern alternative to the traditional white wedding cake. Subtle colour can be added with pretty fresh flowers or delicate sugar blooms. Metallic cakes Metallic accents have been popular for a while, with everything from gold or silver options to bronze, copper and rose gold tones. This trend can be adapted to suit any theme from shabby chic to grand and formal. Drip cakes These striking cakes make a bold statement, with shiny drips of precisionplaced icing snaking their way down the sides of the cake. Again, by using subtle pastels or vibrant primary colours, they can be adapted to suit most themes. Strawberry tower If you are not a cake lover, why not think about having a strawberry tower? These are made from with fresh strawberries dipped in white or coloured chocolate, assembled in a tower, and decorated any way you like.

BRIDES AND BEAUTY
T
here’s so much to do that preparing for your wedding day can feel like a non-stop merry-go-round.
But your bridal beauty regime does not have to be one of your worries. In fact, getting married is the ultimate excuse to indulge in a little personal pampering. This is not the time for a crash diet. You’re better off adopting a more moderate approach, eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, drinking eight large glasses of water a day and cutting down on alcohol and cigarettes. This will help you to lose weight as well as promoting a healthy, glowing complexion and giving your hair extra shine. Regular exercise will help you to lose weight and tone you up as well as improving your circulation and reducing stress levels too. To give your skin that extra glow, go for a professional facial once a month in the run-up to the wedding. But make sure you have your last facial no later than one week before the wedding so that any blotchiness has subsided. All eyes will be on your hands when it comes to the exchanging of the rings, so be sure to book in a manicure. Your hair style plays a major part in the way you feel on the big day, so it’s important to find a stylist you trust. Visit the salon well in advance to discuss style options, and make sure you have a practice styling session. If you’re hiring a make-up artist, make sure you discuss exactly the sort of look you are aiming for well before the wedding, and book in a practice session. If you’re doing your own make-up, remember that less is more if you want to achieve a classic bridal look. There may be a lot of planning to fit in before the big day, but try to make sure you get at least eight hours of sleep every night. Finally - make sure that your chief bridesmaid is carrying an SOS kit on the day of the wedding, including powder and lipstick top-ups for photo shoots and plenty of tissues for
those weepier moments. Searching for your dream dress is one of the most exciting parts of planning your wedding. Whether you’ve had a picture of your perfect dress since you were little, or don’t know where to start, there’s a dress out there for you. You’ll know you’ve found it when you look in the mirror and suddenly picture yourself on your wedding day. When considering the style of dress, take into account the time of year you are getting married. Will the dress look out of place at that time of year? Will you need a cover-up to keep you warm? The weight of the fabric should take into account the season. Choose a dress that suits the setting and tone of the wedding, and similar in shape and colour to those you already know suit you. When trying on dresses, remember to wear the lingerie and heel height you plan to wear on the day. Your wedding day is not the time to feel out of your comfort zone. It is more important that you feel completely comfortable with your choice, and if that means wearing a striking white tuxedo rather than a traditional dress, so be it. Whatever you are looking for, start your search early if you want to be sure of finding your dream. Your wedding shoes are just as important, as they not only have to look good but feel comfortable too – you will be on your feet a lot. And don’t forget accessories. These are your chance to personalise and enhance your outfit, with everything from a traditional veil to gloves, a tiara, hairslides, flowers and jewellery.

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
W
hile a professional wedding photographer is an essential part of any wedding, adding some DIY touches can be a fantastic way to create a wedding portfolio that best suits you. So, while you should leave the key shots to the professionals, there are plenty of other things you can do to personalise you wedding pictures. Photo booths give guests the chance to take some wacky photos, and can be rented, usually including props to personalise your pictures. Another great idea is to create a viewing station by tethering your DSLR to an iPad. Also, make sure you let guests know how to view snaps online after the reception. Encourage your guests to share their photos and you’ll have plenty of extra shots from your special day. With so many people owning smartphones, you can harness these
numbers to your advantage, with a whole list of excellent wedding photo apps that allow guests to instantly upload images from their smartphone devices to online albums. Don’t dismiss the idea of disposable cameras – they have come a long way since the old cardboard-box models. It is also possible to hire point-and-shoot digital cameras for guests to use, offering superior image quality and eliminating the cost of developing images you don’t want. By using some of these ideas, you’ll probably end up with enough images from all your guests to print your own photo album. Printing photos from photo-sharing sites is generally convenient, budget-friendly, and good quality. Custom-printed photo books are another way to really show off some of your favourite shots and would also make a special gift.

THE BRIDESMAIDS
I
nvolving close friends and relatives in your wedding is one of the nicest parts of the whole planning process, and this includes choosing bridesmaids.
Time was that tradition played a large part in choosing bridesmaids and in what their roles should be, but there are no hard and fast rules. Of course, you need not have any bridesmaids, but most brides prefer to have at least one attendant to help them both before the wedding and on the big day itself. Many brides choose a sister or long-standing friend for role of chief bridesmaid. She will be your personal wedding assistant at all times, so make sure you are both happy with this idea. Other bridesmaids can be given particular duties, but are primarily there to support you on the day. Little bridesmaids need do nothing but look sweet, but do make sure there is someone they know on hand to look after them.
1 6 | TO H AV E
&

Avoid choosing bridesmaids because you feel they should be asked, especially when it comes to children. And if anyone declines, don’t be offended. A married friend with children, for example, might want to enjoy your wedding with her family. When it comes to choosing dresses for your bridesmaids, you’ll probably be overwhelmed by the choice. Many evening dresses are suitable as bridesmaids dresses, and often less expensive. If your bridesmaids are different shapes, sizes and ages, pick a colour, or selection of colours, and choose different styles to suit each one. If your bridesmaids are similar in shape or size, you could opt for the same style for each, but have each one in a different colour to complement your own dress or flowers. Little girls look lovely in ivory dresses with full skirts. Tie their outfits in with the rest of the bridesmaids by adding a sash in a complementing colour.

hough it can often feel that brides take most of the limelight on the big day, the grooms deserve just as much attention.
From getting suited and booted to a little manly grooming, there’s plenty for the menfolk to think about in the run-up to a wedding. Time was that men hired their formalwear for a wedding, with the groom, father of the bride, best man and groomsmen all kitted out in identical suits – which often didn’t quite fit. But times have changed. While there will always be occasions that demand formal morning dress, there’s a definite trend away from having all the men dressed alike. Opting for the same suit in different colours, or different styles of suit in the same colour, can work very well. Mix things up according to the season – summer weddings lend
themselves to lighter weights and colours, while winter weddings outfits can include tartans or tweeds to great effect. Waistcoats can inject a pop of colour or individual style into an otherwise traditional suit. Whatever your choice, the key to looking great in any suit is the fit. Most suits will come in three main types of fit: regular for those who prefer a classic style in a comfortable fit; slim for those with a narrower frame; tailored, for a more streamlined look. Accessories can be just as important as the suit, so think about cuff-links, ties, pocket squares, socks and buttonholes. Don’t forget to check that outfits and accessories tie in with the overall wedding theme, to avoid any garish clashes. And although a wedding party should have a consistent theme, the groom must stand out. And if you want to be on trend with suits this season, go for ice blue and silver grey, as a modern take on the traditional navy and charcoal. TO H AV E

rranging the reception is one of the biggest aspects of planning for a wedding, and one of the biggest expenses.
Once you have decided on the type of reception venue you want, then it is time to choose between using any in-house catering on offer, hiring an outside catering firm or catering yourselves. Many venues have in-house caterers that provide all the food and drink services for celebrations held there. These caterers will be familiar with the styles of meal that their chefs specialise in and will also be able to provide tables and chairs, linen, crockery, glasses, waiting staff and some decorations. If you have specific catering requirements, then the venue may not be able to accommodate your wedding or they may allow you to book outside caterers. Similarly, if there is no in-house catering then ask for recommendations from the venue or friends and relatives. Draw up a shortlist of potential caterers and arrange appointments to discuss your specific requirements and compare prices and services. Ask to see sample menus, price list and testimonials from other clients, and about the type of wedding packages they offer. Ask each caterer the same questions, so you get comparable quotes from each. These might include: • Do you only have set menus or can we create our own? • How many options can we offer for each course? • Can any special dietary needs be dealt with? • Can we taste a sample of your food? • Is wine included in a package with food? • Are other drinks included in the package? • Do you provide for waiting staff in your quote? • How near the wedding date can we confirm final numbers?

Self-catering your wedding is a big undertaking. Most couples feel they have enough to worry about on their wedding day without being responsible for the finer details of catering. However, if you are planning a smaller, informal wedding, it is an option worth considering. A buffet is the simplest self-catering option. It is easier to estimate the quantities of food you need and you can provide a variety of hot and cold items that do not need to be cooked and served simultaneously. Make sure you have enough furniture, china, cutlery and glassware, or hire from a catering firm for the day. Some off-licences offer a discount if you hire glasses at the same time as ordering your wine. When it comes to presenting your buffet food, the simplest way is often the most effective. Ask the venue if they have any table linen you could hire, or buy good-quality paper tablecloths and napkins in the colour scheme of your wedding. Plain plates are fine for displaying your food, and a few simple flower or candle arrangements to decorate the tables are all that is needed.

eciding where to go on honeymoon is exciting, but with so many options available, it can be a little overwhelming.
Start by each of you making a list of your top few destinations, and then compare notes, but be realistic about your budget and timescale. Ideas might include a cosmopolitan city honeymoon, action-packed adventure, a beach holiday or maybe a cruise. For couples who love museums, theatres, fine dining and night life, a city honeymoon should tick all the boxes. European cities are within easy reach, but you might want to try somewhere more exotic. If you fancy something a little more on the wild side, then look into trekking, a safari or maybe watersports. Winter honeymooners might even fancy skiing. Beach holidays are always a popular honeymoon choice, and the variety of destinations is almost endless. From the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, there is bound to be a beach to suit you.

Choosing a cruise honeymoon means you can visit a whole range of places without having constantly to pack and unpack. There’s everything from huge floating resorts to smaller specialist ships. For a really personal service, a travel consultant will be able to help you create a bespoke package that pulls together all the elements of your ideal honeymoon. And remember, wherever you choose to spend your honeymoon, think about when you would like it to start. Some couples leave straight from the reception, but it is becoming more popular to wait a day or two. You might decide to stay overnight at your reception venue, so the next day you can have time with family and friends. If you have a particularly long trip ahead of you, waiting a day or two to leave for the honeymoon will give you a chance to relax and check you have everything ready before setting off.
