THE MOVE BUYING and selling a house is a complex and often stressful business. Just as stressful, possibly even more so, is the inevitable move that follows sale and purchase. It need not be, but so many people approach it in a haphazard way with little or no advance planning. The end result is a disorganised and irritating event remembered for years for all the wrong reasons and dreaded when in the future, moving again becomes a strong possibility. But first things first. As soon as a move would appear to be on the cards you must decide whether to do it yourselves or to employ the services of a professional removal company. If you are wise the latter will be your choice, but if you are concerned about the cost it’s worth getting estimates or prices for the job. Compare them with the cost of van hire and the likelihood of being able to find willing helpers among your friends who will give up a day (or two) to help you shift your things. At first sight the cost of a professionally conducted move may look expensive but consider what you get for your money. First there will be a purpose-built van of the right size. This ensures your goods and chattels can be loaded correctly with little or no risk of damage in transit. Next you will have the
services of sufficient removal employees who will be skilled in lifting and moving and who will be able to shift all your gear in an astonishingly fast period of time. Once loaded, everything will be moved to your new address, unloaded and placed exactly where you want it placed. Your goods will be insured in transit and if any problems occur, you will have, figuratively speaking, a door on which to hammer. For an additional charge, you can leave all the packing to the removal firm though if you prefer to do it yourself, they will provide suitable boxes and crates for you to use, some free of charge, some for a minimal rental and some you may have to buy. You will be reassured however that book boxes for example, will be strong enough to take a full load without the danger of them falling apart during the move. The removal firm can even supply you with pet carrying boxes too if you need them. All this will be covered by the one charge you agreed at the start. You will have only to supervise, make tea from time to time, follow the van when it moves off and arrange your things when all is unpacked. The DIY exercise can be very different. First you will have to hire a van (unless you already own one). Unless you or one of your friends has an HGV licence you will be restricted to hiring a 7.5-ton vehicle. This may not be large enough to carry all your goods in one go and you must

home also consider the problem of driving a van of this size if you have never done so before. Loading the van you will find, is a skilled business and must be achieved very carefully if you don’t want to damage anything in transit. You’ll need lots of packing materials, old blankets, etc. You will need ropes to tie things to the sides of the van (if hooks are fitted). You will need lots of willing muscle to carry furniture and boxes into the van. Hopefully you will have hired a van with a hydraulic tail lift, if not you will have to make do with a ramp. Knowing how to lift and move large items of furniture without damaging any of it is not a skill you are naturally born with. Unless you are very lucky (or clever) it is inevitable your precious goods will arrive at the new home with a few dents, cracks and scratches. You may even find you can’t get certain items into the new home because they are a difficult shape or size. The move could take several trips or even a couple of days. You will arrive at the new location quite exhausted but still with the unloading to tackle, by which time some or all of your friends may have moved on elsewhere. If you have children and/or pets they will need care throughout the day and will have become increasingly irritable and under your feet. And at the end of the exercise you will still have to get the van back to the hirer’s premises. The whole experience could prove a nightmare and you will have risked actual physical damage to yourself and your friends in the process. If you have a move in mind, be wise. Consider the whole cost of tackling it yourself in terms not only of money. Consider the wear and tear on your body, your nerves, your friendships, your time and your possessions. That DIY move could prove the most expensive option after all!
