PET OF THE YEAR 2014

Keeping pets happy and healthy is a top priority THE Advertiser’s annual Pet of the Year competition always attracts hundreds of entries from people whose pets are their pride and joy.
Keeping their pets happy and healthy is a priority — just as it is for the competition’s main sponsor, Companion Veterinary Clinic, of Balderton. The team at Companion Veterinary Clinic knows that, when it comes to many aspects of pet care, prevention is better than cure. With an emphasis on care, knowledge and skill, the clinic offers pet owners all the advice, support and services they need to keep their animals in their prime. Companion Veterinary Clinic, established 25 years ago this year, specialises in small animal veterinary care. It is a modern practice with traditional values, whose two vets and five nurses have an extensive range of skills and areas of expertise. Practice owner Paul Dowie said that pet owners needed to be aware of their animals’ needs at different times of the year, and different points throughout their lives. Having a pet health plan in place would help prevent potential problems, he said. A plan includes checking if an animal is of a healthy weight, following a suitable diet, exercising sufficiently and being up-to-date with any immuni-

Checking regularly for lumps and bumps, and considering having a pet spayed or neutered should be included in the plan. Owners also need to be aware of any seasonal risks that may affect their pets. “People need to be aware of their animals’ needs from a health and emotional point of view if they are going to avoid illness and behavioural problems,” Paul said. There are times when no amount of care and planning can prevent problems, and it is at these times that Paul and
the team will do everything they can to help. The two vets, Paul and colleague Davina Tootal, along with a qualified veterinary nurse and administrative staff, aim to give the very best service to you and your pet; to get them better when sick, and advise and listen to how clients wish them to manage any sick companion and proceed respecting the trust given. The busy practice offers the latest technology alongside continuity of care and compassion for pets and their owners. This, together with reasonable fees, has enabled the practice to build up a loyal clientèle.
Paul and Davina each have their own areas of expertise. Paul has a certificate in dermatology, often dealing with complex cases referred to him from other practices and an interest in soft tissue surgery. He is in his third year as president of the Lincoln and District British Veterinary Association. Davina, who joined the practice two years ago, has a special interest in cats, dealing with complicated cases in elderly animals. The practice keeps up with the latest advances in veterinary medicine and technology, offering modern facilities in a friendly environment. A fully-equipped operating surgery and the best anaesthesia techniques and monitoring devices ensure the best for your pet during their stay, whether for routine surgery or something a little more specialised. The practice also has the latest digital radiography, ultrasound and ECG equipment, as well as on-site blood analysis machines for haematology and biochemistry, enabling the team to get quick answers about your pet’s health. A 24-hour emergency service allows for continuity of care outside regular clinic times. For more information, go to www.cvc-pets.co.uk

Who will you choose? WILFIE Good Boy Choc - the safe way to indulge your dog this Easter Just like us, dogs enjoy a sweet treat and Good Boy Choc is completely safe for dogs to eat. One of the UK's leading independent pet specialist suppliers, Armitage Pet Care of Nottingham, has been producing dog safe choc for almost 50 years under their flagship Good Boy brand. The company, which can trace its roots back to 1775, is providing a fabulous range of its pet products as prizes for the Advertiser's Pet of the Year including some tasty and safe treats for dogs and cats. Good Boy Choc has been specially developed for dogs with a recipe that is cocoa free making it a perfectly safe choc treat for dogs. Junior product manager Tina Cockayne said: “Our Good Boy choc products have been specially formulated with our customers in mind - the nation’s dogs. Although there is a cost associated with having a unique pet recipe, as a
226
ZAC
responsible pet company we strongly believe in making our products as tasty as possible without comprising on safety.” So why is human chocolate poisonous to dogs? Human chocolate contains theobromine, a naturally-occurring compound found in the cocoa bean, and it is this compound that is poisonous to dogs. In dogs, the time taken to metabolize theobromine is more than double that of humans and it takes longer to be filtered out by their liver. The symptoms related to theobromine poisoning can include diarrhoea, restlessness, nausea and vomiting. The central nervous system, heart and kidneys can also be affected and in the worse cases the ingestion of theobromine can be fatal. As a guide, a small bar of plain chocolate (100-150g) would be enough to kill an average sized Yorkshire Terrier A medium bar of plain chocolate (200g) would be enough to kill an average Spaniel and a large bar of plain chocolate (400g) would be enough to
227

kill an average Labrador. Unfortunately many pet owners are still unaware of the risks to dogs from eating human chocolate and this is reflected in the latest figures from the Veterinary Poisons Information Service. In 2012, vets made 953 emergency calls about chocolate poisoning to the Veterinary Poisons Information Service; in 2013 this figure was 604. It is positive that it has decreased in a year but people are still unaware the harm that chocolate can have on their dog. So remember, NEVER give human chocolate to dogs. Keep chocolate treats intended for humans well out of reach at all times, and treat them with a specially formulated Good Boy Choc instead. And let’s face it, what better way to treat man’s best friend this Easter. Good Boy Choc is available from all good pet retailers. Armitage Pet Care is the largest manufacturer and distributors of pet products and accessories in Europe, with over 200 years of expertise and

many leading brands in its portfolio. This includes wholesome and nutritious everyday food for dogs, cats and other pets. Keeping pets happy and healthy through feeding them correctly is made easy with the Armitage ranges. Company chief executive Paul Bousfield said Armitage was unique in developing and manufacturing almost all of its own products. This includes the premier Wafcol range, the purest range of dog food on the market, which is ideal for sensitive digestions. The company has recently re-thought its entire range of pet foods and treats, concentrating on more natural ingredients - look out for their attractive packs on the shelves of all good pet product suppliers.
