Autumn is packed with meaning and creative encounters exploring ‘Independence’, focussing on the Caribbean 50 years on from colonial rule. NAE’s main exhibition, ‘I Is AnOther’, brings a critical enquiry, reflection and alternative narrative triggered by the small yet prolific and global Island of Jamaica. This group show, curated with Rachael Barrett, brings a string of brilliant perspectives in sculpture, painting, installation, film and video from across the diverse Jamaican diaspora featuring artists: Storm Saulter, Nari Ward, Ebony Patterson, Hurvin Anderson and Peter Dean Rickards. The public programme is full of rich pickings including exhibition tours by local and active residents and special cuisine in the NAE cafe cooked by our guest Chef Maurice Lewin Watt. Stella Vision and Kemet FM join us to present seminal films including ‘Blood and Fire: The Story of Jamaican Independence’ with a Q&A with Dr Robert Beckford and Academic in Residence, Dr Kevin Brown. An online and digital blog ‘We The People’ for the global Caribbean diaspora will launch, and capture stories of pre and post independence too. We love festivals at NAE, so in partnership with Dune Records we bring you the ‘Lively Up Festival’ featuring a weekend of Jamaican culture across the city including ‘Catch a
Fire’ - a musical tribute to Bob Marley at The Royal Centre and so much more. After a brilliant Olympics we feature artists from across the world in the World Event for Young Artists festival to celebrate young and emerging talents as part of the Cultural Olympiad, London 2012 programme. This season’s experiMENTORs, our programme to support creative talent, include Nottingham Black Archive, Michelle Walsh and First Floor Theatre. The music programme brings Alexander D Great, celebrating Trinidad and Tobago’s 50th year of independence and the award winning Soweto Kinch. VOCAL, our series of debates, discuss the UK riots one year on, preceded by a reading by playwright Archie W Maddocks in a double bill. Our children and family programme continues to offer learning opportunities with YARD preparing their seasonal performance. CULTURE CLOUD our digital invention, will continue to offer 7 special digital prints for you to buy online and at NAE. New Art Exchange is proud to support World Event Young Artists (WEYA) – a showcase of the best creative young talent from across the globe. For ten days the festival will take over multiple sites throughout Nottingham providing the opportunity for 1000 young artists from 100 nations to join together and share their creativity on an international platform. For WEYA, New Art Exchange is hosting a selection of artists from BJCEM - the international biennial platform for young artists from Europe and the Mediterranean. Our exhibition has been especially curated by Claudio Zecchi and Marco Trulli from BJCEM under the theme of ‘Disorder’. MANDALA 3D digital projection New Art Exchange is also supporting MANDALA, an open-air, 3D digital projection and dance show on the Nottingham Council House produced by Sampad and seeper. With live performances from Devika Rao, Aakash Odedra and a soundtrack by world-class musicians Anoushka Shankar and Zakir Hussain. The projection will form part of WEYA opening weekend. I IS ANOTHER

In 2012 the physically small but culturally rich island nation of Jamaica celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence. At this time it seems poignant to call for an independence of critical thought with regard to the island’s rich artistic community, often invisible to the rest of the world beyond the recording studio or stage. Featuring artists who share the island nation as a commonality by heritage alone, this exhibition highlights the best contemporary talent in sculpture, painting, installation, film and video from across the diverse Jamaican diaspora. Comprised mostly of found objects given new purpose, Nari Ward’s dramatic installations examine issues of identity, poverty, race and consumer culture. In response to the exhibition’s primary concern of highlighting distinctive cultural signifiers of identity within the Caribbean community, Nari has chosen to exhibit Domino Men; human scale reproductions of game pieces made of burnt wood, tyres and used clothes. Whilst rich in playful connotations, the pieces are imbued with a strong sense of the perishability of things and allude to the “domino effect”, i.e. a mechanical chain reaction of creating, constructing and then destroying that serves as a metaphor of our behaviour as human beings. Hurvin Anderson’s paintings flirt between abstraction and figuration. Their tranquil scenes merge unstable ideas of memory, conjoined histories, and cross-culturalism. In particular, the series of work represented in this exhibition examine the newly formed identity of the recently displaced Caribbean immigrant in the United Kingdom. The works add gravitas and quiet introspection in spaces that act as catalysts for social interaction in immigrant communities.

28 September 2012 – 5 January 2013 Central Gallery
Marcia Michael: Study Of Kin Ebony G. Patterson presents the Of 72 Project. The series is a reflection on the deaths of 73 members of the Tivoli Gardens community in West Kingston, Jamaica, who were killed during a state of emergency in May 2010. 72 of the victims were male, while one was said to be female. The project comprises 73 hand embellished figures representing the persons still yet to be recognized and identified. As a leading force in the Jamaican film industry, Storm Saulter’s filmmaking captures Jamaica’s gritty present and details of the past that are often overlooked or ignored by the population. In his installation for this exhibition, Saulter comments on the average Jamaican’s attitude towards the environment and littering in particular. Photographer and filmmaker Peter Dean Rickards specialises in capturing another side of island life. Unconventional characters, violence and the raw energy of the street are at the heart of a body of work that gives a voice to the dark underbelly of Jamaican society. In this exhibition Peter’s diverse work acts as an amplifier or medium for an assemblage of artists and personalities who are either willingly or unwittingly playing into his lens. Part critical parody, part unfiltered portal, Rickards’ documentary style comments on the distinctive local attitude toward contemporary art, and provides a platform for a repertoire of characters that reflect elements of Jamaican society almost too rare to believe. The fine line between truth and satire is at the crux of work. Marcia Michael visualises her photographs as carriers of the past. The title of the show, Study of Kin, refers to the term Study of Man, which explores the ethnographical and anthropological way of seeing, documenting and classifying difference in human race. These photographs are based on the methodologies used by photographers, anthropologists, criminologists, biological racialists and scientists who added to the competing discourses on race, during the 19th and 20th Century. However in this case, the artist’s family are the ones that are being looked at, hence the term Kin.

The event will comprise of a short film presentation, and a panel discussion. Panelists include: Professor David Buckingham (Loughborough University), Writer Archie W Maddocks, local community groups, witnesses, emergency services and journalists. Join Rachael Barrett, curator of I Is AnOther in conversation with internationally known art critic and historian Edward Lucie Smith. Smith is also a published poet whose writings are presently studied at Oxford University, a member of the Académie Européenne de Poésie, a past winner of the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize, an anthologist and a practising photographer. Smith and Barrett will discuss the current and future state of the contemporary art world from the perspective of Jamaican artists who exist as both participants and outsiders by mapping journeys of their survival and development. This participatory workshop invites people with learning disabilities to explore the possibilities of expression through body movement as a response to the work featured in the exhibition, I Is AnOther. The workshop is led by Salamanda Tandem who work with a wide spectrum of people to create dance, music and visual artworks. This is an interactive session exploring people’s stories about coming to Nottingham. What brought them to this part of the UK? How did their journey begin? This session will focus specifically on the experiences and reasons why people from Africa and the Caribbean came to Nottingham during the 1950s and 1960s. Present Attempt’s M.O.U.S.E stands for the small, the hidden and the unnoticed; the intruder, the interruption and the parasite. Cat In Hell by Ollie Smith, developed during a residency at New Art Exchange, is a show all about sleek whiskers, snazzy pyjamas, conjuring tricks and confetti, and about getting the cream and choking on it. Trinidadian born Alexander D Great is the winner of Association of British Calypsonians’ 2010 Calypso Monarch title 2011/2012. He is also the BBC’s resident Calypsonian since 2000. Celebrate Trinidad and Tobago’s 50th year of Independence through Alexander’s new calypso, interspersed with some classic calypso from the past.

Tickle Your Senses
Come and turn your family pictures into drawings! Don’t worry if you can’t draw well, we will be using special projectors to help you trace your photographs on paper and make a picture you can take home. Bring along unframed photographs to the session. It can be a picture of you on your own, with your siblings, parents, grandparents or friends – anyone who is important within your family circle, related or not! You will then use the traced image to create a long series of drawings that will reflect your unique family heritage. This workshop is inspired by I is AnOther artist, Hurvin Anderson.
New Art Exchange welcomes all families and friends to participate in our annual Big Draw event – I Can. The Big Draw takes place every October throughout the UK with the mission of getting everyone involved in the fantastic pastime of drawing, regardless of their drawing ability. So get your scribble on and join us to contribute to an enormous collaborative drawing!

Sample, Loop and Record – Music from the Caribbean
This urban art workshop will explore the creative art forms we see around us on the street. Learn how to create amazing graffiti murals and take away your own completed artwork at the end of the session. Admission: Free Age range: 7 – 13 years
Do you want to have a go at making some music? Are you keen to learn how people create the tracks you hear on the radio and TV? If so, this is the perfect workshop for you! You will join a production team and receive hands-on experience of recording, arranging and mixing tracks with a slight West Indian flavour. Just come with your enthusiasm and ideas! The finished track will be available for download so that you can play it to your friends and family. Admission: Free Age range: 11 - 16 years
Made up of 15 - 25 year olds who are passionate about visual and performing arts, these sessions provide insight and experience of working within a creative organisation. The panel meets twice a month to vision and shape the Youth Programme at NAE. From September, the panel will start to develop a photography competition specially designed for young creative talent. The Young People’s Panel will shape the competition theme, secure a commercial sponsor, develop a promotional plan and create an exhibition of the entries in our Central Gallery space. The Young People’s Panel is a great opportunity to develop skills and gain insight into how a contemporary arts venue operates. Yard Young Actors Company YARD Young Actors weekly sessions provide intensive theatre training for young people aged 15 - 25. YARD Youth Theatre Yard Youth Theatre is for anyone aged 11 - 14 with an interest in theatre and performance. The sessions build self-esteem, confidence and expression. Capoeira Angola: Beginners Course for Adults Capoeira is a ritualised reaction based movement game with roots in African Brazilian music, dance and performance culture. Each game is a meeting of minds, bodies and characters in which two players attempt to outwit each other, demonstrating their skill, grace, physical dexterity and understanding of their partner/opponent’s movements. This six week course will introduce newcomers to the fundamentals of the art form. Participants will develop skills in a capoeira sensibility, interactive movement, ‘hidden intentions’ and the spirit of play. Upon completion, you will be equipped with the understanding and confidence to take your first step into the capoeira circle and enjoy the challenges, rewards and magic that it offers! Capoeira for Kids
Aspire: Creative Music Workshop
An opportunity for children to discover the upside down and inside out world of Capoeira! They will be moving on all fours, squatting, rolling, hopping, spinning and cart-wheeling, as well as singing, drumming and clapping. All of the activity is within easy reach of a child’s natural way of being. The spirit of play, use of non-verbal communication and enjoyment of music make capoeira a truly integrated creative and developmental activity for children. The sessions are brought to you in association with Capoeira Angola Nottingham. Sessions are divided into two age ranges to best meet the needs of all children. Nottingham singer and BASCA (British Academy of Songwriters Composers & Authors) Award winning songwriter, Freddie Kofi, leads a brand new vocal and music development programme, Aspire.
Kathak Dance
Based on gospel music, Aspire will focus on the use of positive, life changing, uplifting themes that have the potential to inspire and motivate the local community through a ten-week series of workshops. The workshops will culminate with a concert performance here at NAE involving all workshop artists and singers.
During this 15 week period Vina will work with the group to develop skills in the classical Indian Dance for of Kathak creating a language of movement with the participants, representing an identity rooted in two cultures.

Vina Ladwa’s Manushi Dance classes have taken place at NAE for over a year now, but new members are welcome each season!

EVS Programme: Bringing an international perspective to Nottingham’s art scene New Art Exchange is a designated and accredited European Voluntary Service (EVS) Centre for the East Midlands. Patrice Puchaux from France, Shaden Meleas from Egypt, Erica Melloni from Italy and María Jesus Oporto Brieva from Spain arrived in Nottingham earlier this year to work within the creative teams of NAE and World Event Young Artists. ‘We are really enjoying our EVS experience. We have learned about ourselves, and how to be independent. From working at NAE we have learnt more about western perspectives on art. At the end of our EVS experience we hope to be better qualified as a creative producers, marketers, curators, performers and artists.’ Patrice Puchaux & Shaden Meleas This project has been funded with support from the European Union.
National Schools Film Week National Schools Film Week is a free, annual festival for schools offering a wide programme of feature films at cinemas across the UK. The festival enables schools to take young people to experience films at the cinema during the school day as part of their curriculum learning. NAE will be giving over our cinema facilities to local primary and secondary schools in October to watch Kirikou and the Sorceress and The First Grader. Academic in Residence Dr Kevin Brown, a Research Fellow in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham is also a community volunteer, radio broadcaster and entrepreneur. As community volunteer he has worked with various community organisations as a mentor for Black children. He will be working with New Art Exchange to facilitate a live broadcasting of a Q&A session with KEMET FM and will be leading a Gallery Walk and Talk.
NAE’s experiMENTOR Programme: experiMENTOR is a creative development initiative that supports the professional development of artists and creatives and provides a public platform for their experimentation. This season we are thrilled to be joined by First Floor Theatre, artist Michelle Walsh and Nottingham Black Archive (NBA). First Floor Theatre are a multi-disciplinary theatre company creating original, groundbreaking theatre and arts projects. They will be using our spaces to meet, share ideas, rehearse and collaborate with their associate artists. www.first-floor.info Michelle Walsh is photographer and video installation artist. Her work explores contemporary portraiture at the point where neuroscience intersects with Eastern philosophy. Michelle will be engaging members of our immediate community with her current research, and asking them to sit for a number of photographs and video portraits. Young People at WEYA As part of World Event Young Artists (WEYA), Kyle Futers, Nottingham based actor, and facilitator, and a regular contributor to NAE’s YARD programme, will lead a group of young individuals through a series of fresh artistic opportunities. The sessions will conclude with a public performance in the city which will see participants expressing their reflection about their home town of Nottingham.
