From transsexuals of the Holy Land to a reflection on war in Iraq, this season’s vibrant and thought-provoking programme presents the beauty, richness and contradictions of a region in flux. Through a multi-facetted exploration of Middle Eastern identity, this programme challenges the status quo of orientalism and gender often presented in mainstream media – but also lets you have fun along the way. We are delighted in this season to, with the support of FORMAT, present the first all-female photographic collective to emerge from the Middle East in Realism in Rawiya - a body of work from 6 exphotojournalists which bridges the worlds of documentary and art. Following on from their success at FORMAT photography festival in 2011, this exhibition marks Rawiya’s first major group exhibition in the UK and features here at NAE as part of Format 13. NAE’s reputation for putting on a great party will also be upheld this season with the return of Ishraqah – a celebration of Middle Eastern art and culture. Held over two days, the festival will present a lively programme of film, music and workshops along with a day-long symposium led by women reflecting on issues such as the politics of self-representation. Throw in a unique performance and in-conversation with MOBO-award winning Zoe Rahman; an exhibition by the Wideyed artist-led collective as part of the FORMAT International photography festival; a cafe menu with a seasonal Middle Eastern flavour; gallery tours; a vibrant list of family friendly events and school holiday workshops – and we’ve got a full and inspirational season. REALISM IN RAWIYA

25 JANUARY – 20 APRIL 2013 MAIN GALLERY

LAUNCH EVENT: THURSDAY 24 JANUARY 2013, 6PM - 9PM

Realism in Rawiya presents the work of the first all-female photographic collective to emerge from the Middle East, Rawiya. Operating within what is still a predominantly male-dominated industry, and one fraught with politics, the group credits pooling resources and talents for their rapidly developing profile throughout the Middle Eastern region and beyond. Following on from their success at FORMAT photography festival in 2011, this exhibition marks Rawiya’s first major group exhibition in the UK. Each artist established their individual careers as photojournalists, working for news agencies and publications across the Arab world. By living and reporting in the region, the photographers gained an insider’s view of the extremities of these settings, whilst also observing how their reportage could become reframed in the international media’s final edit of events. This shared experience inspired the members to create their own platform, to present what they felt to be the wider political and social stories currently going unseen. Presented as a collective body of work which bridges the worlds of documentary and art, this exhibition captures the vision of the Rawiya: a multitude of stories and first-hand accounts which challenge the status quo of racism and orientalism often presented in mainstream media. With a specific focus on gender and identity, the exhibition presents a thoughtful view of a region in flux, balancing its contradictions while reflecting on social and political issues and stereotypes. IN CONFLICT: REFLECTIONS ON THE CONSTANT WAR IN IRAQ 12 JANUARY – 28 FEBRUARY 2013 CENTRAL & MEZZANINE GALLERY

LAUNCH EVENT: SATURDAY 12 JANUARY, 3PM - 5PM Ten years on since the invasion of Iraq, New Art Exchange presents In Conflict: Reflections on the Constant War in Iraq, a solo show of Artist Satta Hashem, winner in 2012 of the New Art Exchange Prize awarded at the Nottingham Castle Open in 2011. Satta Hashem presents drawings, paintings and prints which comprise graphic, symbolic, figurative and abstract styles. His practice communicates the sympathy he feels for those that find themselves constantly in the middle of the conflict. Rugged, loose and chaotic, the aesthetic of a selection of Satta’s works describe the human experience of living through conflict. In this exhibition, such collections are juxtaposed against representations of the brutal, impartial and ordered nature of the weaponry at the heart of such settings. Collectively Satta’s practice captures the harshness of the topic of war, both objectively and as an immediate experience. Born in Buhriz – Diyala, near Baghdad in 1959, Satta now lives and works in Leicester, UK.

FORMAT EXPOSURE: THERBLIG WIDEYED 8 MARCH – 13 APRIL 2013 MEZZANINE GALLERY

New Art Exchange is pleased to present Therblig, an exhibition by Wideyed, an artist-led collective comprising the photographers Lucy Carolan, Richard Glynn and Louise Taylor. Therblig is part of the FORMAT International Photography Festival organised by QUAD in partnership with the University of Derby. This year’s FORMAT theme is ‘factory’ and ‘mass production’. In response to this, Wideyed have created an installation inspired by the work of Lillian and Frank Gilbreth. These motion study pioneers from the early 1900’s used long exposure photography and film, as tools to study the work habits of manufacturing and clerical employees. The objective of the research was to improve the well-being and productivity of workers. The Gilbreth’s coined the term Therblig (their name in reverse) in relation to their research. This exhibition is sponsored by SCA tissue mill in Prudhoe, Northumberland. FORMAT13 is the 6th edition of the festival. For full details of the wider festival programme see: www.formatfestival.com.

Latin American Women in the UK

An Exhibition curated by young people for young people New Art Exchange Young People’s Panel are group of young creatives passionate about contemporary arts practices. This season in partnership with Nottingham Trent University they will present their first exhibition showcasing some of the best photographic work from Nottingham’s young communities. Based upon the theme of documentary photography, the exhibition Still gives young photographers the chance to explore the world around them and reflect on significant issues to curate a unique collection of still images that depict the world as they see it.

A project by Pablo Allison

Latin American Women in the UK is a photographic project by British-Mexican photographer Pablo Allison. The project is based on the lives of eleven young Latin American women and aims to stimulate debate and research on women, identity and independence in Latin America. The young participants worked with Pablo Allison to develop their photography skills and to produce a visual diary representative of their experience living in the UK. Their imagery draws upon themes such as independence, memory and identity. These visual diaries, along with a portrait taken of each participant by Pablo Allison, will be displayed within the exhibition.

MYRIAM ABDELAZIZ (RAWIYA ARTIST) Myriam Abdelaziz is a French photographer of Egyptian origins, born in Cairo.

DR ZAHERA HARB Zahera is a Lebanese journalist and academic who has covered war operations in the battlefield of South Lebanon.

ISHRAQAH (meaning the start of something new in Arabic), is a regular festival held at NAE which explores and celebrates arts and culture from the diverse Middle Eastern region. Held as two parts, ISHRAQAH introduces thoughtful debate and discussion during Friday’s symposium, whilst Saturday provides a vibrant programme of film screenings, live music performances, art workshops and dance performances for the whole family! Delicious Middle Eastern dishes will also be served in our café all day.

Nottingham Trent University is host to one of the longeststanding Centres for Colonial and Postcolonial Studies in the UK. NAE is delighted to be partnering with NTU to support the launch of their new ‘Postcolonial Speakers Series’: a programme of lectures, readings and discussions running throughout the year that will feature some of the leading postcolonial authors, filmmakers and critics working today. All of these events will be free and open to the public, so come along to hear NTU’s first (mystery) speaker, to find out more about the Postcolonial Speakers Series, and to celebrate the start of this prestigious new programme of events. A lecture exploring film, photography & shifting visions of women from the Middle East, followed by a screening of Shirin Neshat’s ‘Women Without Men’ (2009, 95 mins.) Women from the Middle East have often been the subject of others’ gazes presented in the western media as silent and without agency. Yet for decades, women from across the Middle East have been gazing through the camera lens themselves, and have produced a rich body of filmic and photographic work through which they have sought to shift ways in which women are represented. Join local residents and international artist John Newling for a delicious three course meal served by our NAE chefs. The topic of conversation for the night is: what do you value? and The Rise Choir will be performing songs relating to this theme. All are welcome to this event linked to John Newling’s Hedley Street: Notions of Value, the first artist response to a 25 metre wall in a public space just a few streets away from NAE. A presentation and panel discussion responding to the on-going upheavals in the Middle East and North Africa. A filmmaker sets out to discover the life of Joyce Vincent, who died in her bedsit in North London in 2003. Her body wasn’t discovered for three years, and newspaper reports offered few details of her life - not even a photograph.

MOBO award winner and Mercury Award nominee Zoe Rahman is celebrated for her individual style, powerful technique and exuberant performance and is one of Britain’s leading young musicians.

Spoken Word Prism of Feminism Join spoken word artists as they shed and ‘split’ light on the different colours of feminism and its relevance today through their poetry. This all-female event will be hosted by Mia Johnson, a young performer for YARD Theatre Company. There will also be an Open Mic slot at the end of the event. Artists will include Deborah ‘Debris’ Stevenson – a widely published poet and Founder of The Mouthy Poets, Sarah Rain - a young performance poet from Nottingham and member of the Blackdrop Poetry Collective and Michelle Hubbard - a well-established poet and performer and founding member of the Blackdrop Poetry Collective. YARD Youth Theatre Performances NAE’s youth theatre will take to the stage on Saturday 6 April to present their end of season performances! The Story Of Me

Make your own accessories at our light night special workshop in the buildup to our Middle Eastern Festival, ‘Ishraqah’. During this unique drop in workshop, you will learn to make every day materials into fashionable, funky accessories with a Middle Eastern twist!

Join artist Shaden Meleas once again for a creative craft session – this time focussing on jewellery making! Come along with the whole family to learn how to make beautiful but deceptively simple pieces of jewellery with a Middle Eastern twist. Participants will create unique accessories including necklaces, earrings and bracelets which you can take away at the end of the day.

Inspired by documentary story-telling seen within the ‘Realism in Rawiya’ exhibition, First Floor Theatre invites you to create autobiographical ‘shrines’ to mark out special moments, life changing events, and favourite times in your life. Participants will use found objects, everyday items, collage, text and photographs. Bring your own photos to be scanned and they will become part of the miniature 3D installation, which celebrates who you are. Take them home at the end of the session for a lasting memory of the exhibition and your story so far!

My Family in Print! Printmaking Workshop

Join artist Satta Hashem for an innovative painting and drawing workshop. Here participants will view Satta’s amazing artworks which will be on show in our Mezzanine Gallery, and then learn how to use unusual, everyday materials such as tea, coffee and wine to create their own drawings. The resulting pictures will have a very different appearance from traditional paintings! Admission: £3 for one adult with one child, £2 for additional participants thereafter. This Family Friendly workshop is inspired by our Main Gallery exhibition ‘Realism in Rawiya’ which features artists from the Middle East. Continuing this Middle Eastern theme, this workshop, lead by Egyptian artist Shaden Meleas, will take inspiration from elegant Arabic script to help you make your own unique designs. Participants will learn how to stencil beautiful Arabic lettering onto textiles to create decorative scarves which you can take away at the end of the session - wear it yourself or give it away as a handmade gift! Street Seems Different Now

It can be said photographs only reveal part of a truth; it is up to us to help tell the rest of the story! Join artist Sian Watson for a creative two hour session where you will explore the potential of your imagination. Taking the photographs presented in the Main Gallery as the starting point, participants will use live art and visual art techniques to reimagine the hidden stories found within the artwork on show. Using sound, movement, spoken word, illustration and props, participants will delve below the surface of the image to find new meanings and bring the photograph to life. Admission: FREE Age range: 11 - 16 years

Work with photographer Sian Stammers and a collection of cameras to discover different slants and scenes in the streets around us. Who lives at number 9? What really happened on Tuesday night? What’s the truth?

Images of people often scream ‘stereotype’! So how would you describe YOU in a poster?

First Floor Theatre leads you on a journey to retell the legends of your local area, unravelling fact from fiction. During this two day workshop you will use theatre, sound and film to create an exciting performance to present to family and friends on the final day.

To kick start this creative journey; bring along photos, text, drawings, bits-andpieces…even your hopes and your dreams! Anything you feel represents you. Working with photographer Sian Stammers you will learn to scan, edit, overlay and create your own A3 unique poster that not only works as a fantastic graphic image, but also totally represents you!

Fancy developing your skills as a performer? Then this is the workshop for you. Back by popular demand, Dwayne Antony Simms leads another exciting, experimental performance workshop based around personal stories. Kathak Dance Kathak is one of the eight classical dances from India that has a strong emphasis on rhythm, footwork, expression and grace. Join Vina Ladwa a trained Kathak dance artist, choreographer and tutor for this 15 week course. During the course you will develop both basic and advanced skills of the dance, and also explore the language of movement representing an identity rooted in two cultures. Admission: £75.00 (£60.00 concession) for the full 15 week course £6.00 (£4.00 concession) for each session paid separately

Body as Canvas First Movement works with learning disabled people across the East Midlands, creating arts projects that develop and promote their unique creativity. Their arts sessions provide a stimulating, positive and supportive environment to encourage active participation. This participatory workshop invites people with learning difficulties to explore a rich sensory environment using sounds, movement and digital drawing projections celebrating the Hindu festival of colour called Holi. Young People’s Panel Made up of 15 - 25 year olds who are passionate about visual and performing arts, these sessions provide insight and experience of working within a creative organisation. The panel meets twice a month to develop their own creative projects and to influence the Youth Programme at New Art Exchange. The Young People’s panel are currently curating their own exhibition of work by young photographers focussing on documentary style photography. This will go on show in the Central Gallery in March (see page 8 for more details). YARD YARD (Youth Arts Research and Development) is a creative hub for young people aged 11-24 to develop skills as performers and creative producers. New members are welcome to join our YARD Theatre every season! Starting on 8 January, YARD theatre will be led by experienced performer and theatre maker, Sooree Pillay. Sooree is a founding member of Frontline Theatre, and trained at The International Jacques Lecoq School of Theatre and The Desmond Jones School of Mime and Physical Theatre. Participants within our YARD theatre groups will be guided through a 12-week course where they will develop a range of skills in spoken word and physical theatre. Taking inspiration from our Main Gallery exhibition the groups will be exploring different methods of storytelling, and ownership of the media, as they develop their own narratives. The workshops will lead to the development of their own original piece of theatre performed in our Performance Space Saturday April 6. Every Tuesday, 5pm – 7pm

YARD Young Actors Company YARD Young Actors weekly sessions provide intensive theatre training for young people aged 15 - 25. During the sessions participants will develop skills in voice, script work, characterisation and movement. Entry into the group is by audition only. Sister Elements is an artist with a background in Indian Classical Kathak dance and music production. Through the experiM ENTOR programme, Sister Elements will be developing the project ‘Sufi in the City’. The piece will explore the juxtaposition between a series of conflicting themes: the relationship between natural environments and the industrial city; traditional Kathak, Butoh and Sazuki dance and contemporary performance/choreography; spiritualism and modern British secular society. http://sisterelements.co.uk Jasim Ghafur is a multi-disciplinary visual artist born in Tawela, Kurdistan Iraq who has been heavily involved in the political art and human right movement in Kurdistan. Through the experiM ENTOR programme Jasim will be working in developing a video installation: ‘From Streetless City’. The piece is inspired by a modern Iranian poet, Ahmadi Shamlo, and investigates the invisible existence of millions of children who are born into poverty, abuse, social and armed conflict. www.jghafur.blogspot.co.uk

The Cutting Room (Clare Harris and Jennifer Ross) is a curatorial organisation who work within the field of digital technology. Through the experiM ENTOR programme they will develop creative thinking stimulated by Nottingham Playhouse’s production of Kite Runner (April 2013). Their residency will lead to further explorations coinciding with NEAT14 (June-July 2014) resulting in future works. www.the-cutting-room.org Dwayne-Antony Simms is a dance artist and choreographer. His artistic development has taken him through Europe to the United States and Middle East. In 2013 Dwayne will be travelling to Israel to attend an experimental dance residency to develop a new project called ‘Roll on the L.LAW ’. The R&D phase that follows, will utilise the sound scores and photographs from his pilgrimage, to build this durational piece of work. Dwayne will be using NAE’s facilities to develop Roll on the L.LAW.

ACADEMIC IN RESIDENCE

The Unfinished Conversation In this multi-layered three-screen installation created by acclaimed film-maker John Akomfrah, The Unfinished Conversation examines the nature of the visual as triggered across an individual’s memory landscape. With particular reference to identity and race, the film presents academic Stuart Hall’s memories and personal archives, extracted and relocated in an imagined and different time to reflect on the questionable nature of memory itself. The Unfinished Conversation premiered at Bluecoat as part of the Liverpool Biennial 2012, NAE are excited to present this work in May 2013! An Autograph ABP Commission. Executive producer Mark Sealy, Director of Autograph ABP. Produced by Lina Gopaul and David Lawson, Smoking Dogs Films Production, in collaboration with Professor Stuart Hall.

Anna Ball

Academic-in-Residence Dr Anna Ball of Not tingham Trent University joins us as NAE’s Academic in Residence for the Januar y – April sea son. Anna is Senior Lecturer in English, specialising in postcolonial feminist studies. Her research is concerned with the intersec tion of postcolonialism and feminis m, and their per tinence to questions of culture, identity and power within the Middle East. During this Academic Residen cy at NAE, Anna is looking forward to exploring some of the ways in which her rese arch into gender politics in film and literature also translates into the medium s of photography and art. She is also excited to find out how conversations with artists, curators and audiences might challenge some of the dry, dusty and abstract ideas abo ut culture that are sometimes held by aca demics. Anna will be chairing our conference ‘She Who Tells a Story’ and hosting a num ber of events during the course of the sea son. See pages 9, 10 and 12 for details.

The Jack Vickers Award is a bursary to support, nurture and recognise the career and interest of young writers interested in the visual arts. It will be awarded to a number of young people aged 18 to 26 based in the East Midlands to write a review of either an exhibition or event at New Art Exchange, Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery or one of the independent artist led spaces in this city or beyond. The review will thereafter be published in NVA.

Applicants should submit an essay of 500–1000 words on a recent exhibition or art work. Deadline for the first award is January 7, 2013 at 5pm.

Jack Vickers, writer, born 20 December 1988; died August 28, 2012. He leaves behind a twin sister, Lizzie and elder Brother, Simon. His parents, family and friends have kindly donated a bequest to the New Art Exchange. This donation will go towards funding a bursary for young people interested in contemporary art as Jack was. NAE with Nottingham Visual Art (NVA) have created an award which will be presented three times a year.

Winners of the award will be announced on the 21st of January.
