Welcome 2019 In 2019 we all need to laugh more, especially with a count-down to uncertainty looming. To liven up the deflection with an exuberantly designed collision, is Hardeep Pandhal – featuring colourful portrayals and cultural exchanges with his mother lost in translation. Recently nominated for the Jarman Film Award 2018, the Glasgow-based Brummie is a rising star. In an exhibition across NAE and Primary, Pandhal draws on Sikh and Panjabi contexts, working with animation, illustration, sculpture and textiles. His post-colonial trauma brings a testing humour. Also exhibiting is Shiraz Bayjoo, a multi-disciplinary artist exploring important contexts and histories between East Asia, India and East Africa. Through his work he repositions global conversations on de-colonisation, challenging Eurocentric perspectives drawing from his Mauritian ancestors, and heritage. International to local voices in the public programme include South African artist Sethembile Msezane, who delivers a performance exploring themes of femicide. Coleen Francis’s Colour of Love exhibition shares stories of mixed race Nottingham couples post-war. The Polish Fat Thursday and Persian Nowruz events celebrate global culture in a four hour feast of cultural exchange. HARDEEP PANDHAL
The exhibits at NAE include an oversized hoodie, redefined by the artist as a cloak. Knitted by Pandhal’s mother, the cloak was then adorned with his own hand embroidery. Pandhal’s suggestive designs pull the threads tightly together, creating bodily-like protrusions. Pandhal and his mother are divided by language, he speaks little Punjabi, while she speaks little English. What is lost in translation is found, hinting at things that are known without being spoken.
Paranoid Picnic: The Phantom BAME 19 JANUARY – 17 MARCH 2019 EXHIBITION LAUNCH Friday 18 January: 5pm – 7pm, Primary 6pm – 9pm, NAE
The cloak is displayed unfinished, amongst a series of sculptural foregrounds. Perforated with semi-functional head holes, the foregrounds invite visitors to perform and play with identity. However, whilst the sculptures borrow from the distinctly British aesthetic of Victorianera seaside amusements, the imagery at play comprises Karni Bharni (depictions of hell in popular Indian print culture), an adaptation of 2Pac's posthumous album cover Makaveli, and an imagined character wearing coattails inspired by graphic novels.
Paranoid Picnic: The Phantom BAME is a new solo exhibition by artist Hardeep Pandhal which confronts post-colonial traumas with testing humour. The exhibition takes place across two sites in Nottingham: New Art Exchange and Primary. This dual setting creates what the artist describes as ‘parodic parallel worlds’ into which he projects his frustration of societal structures. Pandhal typically works with non-linear forms of digital video which layer lurid hand drawn cartoons, psychedelic and disorienting narratives with his own deadpan rap music. For Paranoid Picnic, Pandhal has created a new video installation to be presented at Primary. The piece, exploring themes of heritage, acts of remembering and nostalgia, samples scenes from the BBC mini-series Cranford (2007), a Neo-Victorian adaption of Elizabeth Gaskell’s classic fiction.
Hand-drawings, the mainstay of Pandhal’s practice, frame the installation at both NAE and Primary. Ranging from works on paper to doodles-in-the margins type illustrations drawn freely on the gallery walls, the imagery offers a glimpse into Pandhal’s wider thinking and extends the social commentary feel of his practice. The works presented at NAE continue this dialogue, drawing on a range of historical influences to further Pandhal’s interest in ‘dissonant heritage’ – the way in which societal stories and identities are subject to conflicting realities that warp and shift through time.

Searching for Libertalia 19 JANUARY – 17 MARCH 2019
Searching for Libertalia brings together new and existing works by artist Shiraz Bayjoo. Bayjoo’s artworks draw on personal and public archives to address cultural memory, nationhood, and the challenges of establishing a collective identity within a globalised postcolonial context. Working across media Bayjoo’s practice explores the legacy of colonialism across the Indian Ocean region and its complex histories of slavery, migrations and conquest.
Searching for Libertalia spans from video to painting and photographs to archive materials bridging gaps between dominant narratives of colonisation and hidden histories. Visitors will experience artworks and archive materials displayed in luxuriant frames, magnificent wall cabinets, and an imposing wooden vitrine alluding to the influence of domestic, religious and institutional spaces in which the creation of historical narratives take place.
The exhibition intertwines three historical narratives about the island of Madagascar – its history of piracy with the story of Captain Misson, slave trading by the French East India Company throughout the 17th to 19th century, and the Malagasy fight for independence from France’s Vichy government during the Second World War. The interlinking between these distinct narratives reveals the repetitive nature of history. Searching for Libertalia also underlines liberation and anti-colonial movements in African post-colonies and their relation to contemporary questions of race and identity.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a programme of events. These include a gallery tour led by the artist and curator, and an artist talk with guest speakers which will connect the artwork with the historical context of Madagascar, and more broadly the Indian Ocean region, and its contemporary legacies. Signal Her Return III PERFORMANCE:

South African artist Sethembile Msezane presents a living installation of flames, braids of hair and bells, setting the space for a narration of stories of women who have lost their lives at the hands of violence. Signal Her Return III interrogates the history of the vilification of women that ultimately leads to their demise. Brought into this world with a name, some of these women’s lives have ended as a femicide statistic, erasing their very existence.
Using interdisciplinary practice including performance, photography, film and sculpture, Msezane’s practice creates commanding works, heavy with spiritual and political symbolism. Her work also examines the processes of mythmaking which are used to construct history, calling attention to the absence of the black female body in both the narratives and physical spaces of historical commemoration.
Central to the piece is a figure by the name of Time who is all of these women and yet is none them, serving as a witness to their horrors and their communicator. Signal Her Return III meditates on the call to remember the spirits of the women who have passed.

UK Young Artists (UKYA) City Takeover comes to Nottingham! The event will span the city for seven days, immersing visitors in an array of innovative and contemporary artworks by over 250 artists aged 18–35. Working across disciplines of visual arts the event will create a survey of contemporary UK practice alongside artists from China, South Korea, Europe and the Mediterranean. NAE will showcase several artists in our Central Gallery stairwell space, including photography and video from Alessandro Tricarico (Italy), Marco Tagliafico (Italy), Matt Greenwood (UK), Vittorio Campanella and Emanuele Piras (Italy). Several other artists feature in our live events programme, see page 12 for details.

The Colour of Love focuses on capturing and archiving the experiences of Black African-Caribbean and White British people who were in mixed race relationships in Nottinghamshire during the 1940s – 1970s. Through working with volunteers from the community, the project has spoken to over one hundred Nottinghamshire residents who have helped to shape the research. This exhibition presents a small selection of family photographs put forward by contributors. The project uncovers stories of lives lived as part of a mixedrace couple, with all of the challenges, prejudices but also joy that brought. Presented in partnership with The Colour of Love.

Paranoid Picnic: The Phantom BAME artist Hardeep Pandhal leads a tour of his work both at NAE and Primary Studios. Using ‘testing humour’ Pandhal confronts postcolonial traumas and the frustrations of societal structures. Through films sampling period dramas to large scale cartoon figure cut-outs dressed in traditional South Asian attire, Pandhal’s work is a surreal collage of wit and the uncanny. This tour starts at NAE and continues on to Primary. NAE will be organising free transport for all attendees to travel to Primary.

Ant Lightfoot’s Am I A Terrible Person? is a comedic look into the mind of an OCD & depression sufferer. Looking at failure, messing up and how it feels to be a 20-something artist with an increasingly intrusive and overbearing mental illness.

Join Jeanne Roberts from My Sight Nottinghamshire for a specialist gallery tour and workshop suitable for blind and visually impaired visitors. Exploring Searching for Libertalia by Shiraz Bayjoo, Jeanne will use detailed descriptions to help participants build a rich understanding of the work. The tour will be followed by a specialist creative workshop in response to the themes explored in the exhibition.

Join Iranian community organisation YANA for this celebration of the Persian New Year and the coming of spring, marked each year by communities across the Middle East. With performances by Nottingham-based band Rubaiyat and local drumming collective Arnica including traditional Iranian and British folk music, this family-friendly event also includes a drop-in craft workshop. Come along to see the beautifully decorated Haft-Seen table and learn more about this ancient celebration.

Natalia Bruce will teach you fun, easy ways to act, perform and feel confident working with a group to build a performance looking at who we are and who we want to be. This four day course will use games, play and build up a basic understanding of acting techniques to create a unique performance to be shared at the end of the week. Suitable for beginners.
Join professional acting coach Natalia Bruce to learn about acting and building your own performances. In a big world full of pressures, what empowers us? What does it take to feel strong, to support each other? Looking at challenging issues such as social media peer pressure, join Natalia to explore how we see ourselves and how we can use our voices for positive change. Matera European Capital of Culture 2019: Two projects, Matera CittĂ Aperta and Architecture of Shame, are being developed with partners IAC Centro Arti Integrate and Fabio Ciaravella and Farm Cultural Park (Sicily) in Matera, exploring the complexities of our identity within the context of architectural spaces and transient cultural places.
NAE’s international programme is an artistic collaboration between the UK and Africa, the Caribbean, South Asia, South Korea, Middle East and Europe showcasing the finest contemporary art practices across cultures. HTE looks beyond the surface to artistically explore key states of existence and realities.
INTERNATIONAL STUDY RESIDENCY
HTE is a UK consortium led by New Art Exchange with Delfina Foundation, Eastside Projects, QUAD/FORMAT, Primary, MAC and the Tetley. The programme is supported through funding by Arts Council England Lottery funds inclusive of Ambition for Excellence.
NAE is working with Umberto Napoletano, visual artist, calligrapher and design and arts student of Bari Polytechnic. Via exploration of Hyson Green, Napoletano is studying how building signs, by multi ethnic cultures, are formed.
Absence: Mimesis: African Soldier by John Akomfrah is a major film installation marking the role of African and colonial soldiers in WWI, co-commissioned by NAE, 1418NOW and Smoking Dogs. The wider Absence programme explores cultural leadership, commissioning, seminars, conferences and residency exchanges with partners across the UK and Africa.

EXPERIMENTOR
The Real Creative Futures business support programme, part of the EU and ACE funded Big House, is entering its final stages. We are working with over 180 different entrepreneurs and businesses from the creative and digital sector, including visual artists, performers, photographers and writers. Over the last three months we have participated in the Nottingham Arts Mela 2018 employing the City Arts dome as a creative space, supported Nottingham’s first independent photography festival Off-Centre and hosted a wellbeing workshop for creatives. Plans for early 2019 include workshops on branding, PR, and entrepreneurs toolkit and how to employ your first member of staff.
Our artist residency programme, ExperiMentor continues to build, supporting 16 artists in total. Last season six participants shared their practice and progression with us, and we have been able to support two research visits within the UK. Core artists, Billy Dosanjh, Farida Makki, Effy Harle, Amelia Seren Roberts, Chiara Dellerba and Kim Bormann continue to develop their projects with us this season.
ACADEMIC IN RESIDENCE Tasawar Bashir academic-artist explores the ontology of sufi sound, testing and exploring new research as part of his PHD. Ian Sergeant, curatorial specialist in culturally diverse study, explores black masculinity.
