MISSION STATEMENT
KEY A CHIEVEMENTS IN 2009/10 • Commemorated launching the Mela festival in Nottingham 21 years back, with hugely successful Mela 21 celebrations. The event took place over 3 venues, yielded more than 100 media articles; with the ‘buzz’ attracting over 6000 people, 6 international TV crews and the Australian and Indian cricket teams.
“To establish New Art Exchange as a national centre of excellence promoting contemporary arts development within the cultural and creative industries, by delivering a programme of activity to promote, support and advocate contemporary multi-cultural arts development in visual and performing arts, and new media, led by African, African Caribbean and South Asian arts practice, serving an international community with roots firmly embedded in the local area.”
• Commissioned the critically acclaimed ‘Floating Coffins’ by Zineb Sedira, which has since toured to Finland, Copenhagen, Sweden, London and France. • Won 5 design and architecture awards in this period including the RIBA National Award, RIBA East Midlands Award, The Lord Mayor’s Awards for Urban Design - New Build and Overall Award, and the National Civic Trust Award 2009. • National Press and PR coverage and profile for New Art Exchange, including features in The Times, Guardian, The Independent, Daily Telegraph, BBC and ITV amongst others.

• Continued to nurture new talent and provide opportunities for local rising artists such as Hetain Patel and Nadim Chaudhury, by commissioning work produced by them as well as supporting initiatives such as Nottingham Castle Annual Open and YARD Theatre. • Hosted our ever expanding Community Day, underpinning our desire to increase engagement with the local community. In addition to this we launched the regional artist, higher education and communityfocused Central Gallery. • Introduced Cinema programme, achieved through securing capital funding from NDC.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT EDWIN MAXWELL MBE Hello and Welcome, In September 2009 we celebrated our first birthday in style by unravelling a montage of images in the shape of a ‘1’ draped across the front of our award-winning building. It signified a rich tapestry of art, culture and communities expressing their stories, perspectives and ideas here at New Art Exchange (NAE). It was a remarkable first year including numerous awards, events, workshops, new partnerships and exhibitions of the highest value touring across Europe. We engaged the local with the international and vice versa, raising ambition and aspiration for the expression of African, African Caribbean, South Asian and minority voices of Nottingham, East Midlands and the UK. In addition to delivering such a rich artistic programme, we also recruited new members to the board with expertise from science, education, marketing and business - an invaluable set of experiences and skills.
5
Of course all of this would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the community, our funders and our partners. On behalf of the Board I would like to thank them all for giving so generously of their time and expertise and hope they will continue to support NAE in the months and years to come. A huge thanks also to the NAE team that have created such a strong artistic programme; worked with the local community and educational establishments, and consistently brought in and engaged audiences, whilst raising the profile of the organisation. A mention also to our artists, volunteers and audiences for their indomitable spirit and support. We hope that you continue to enjoy the venue spaces and our programme, and look forward to seeing you here at NAE soon. Edwin Maxwell MBE Chair of New Art Exchange
CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S REPORT SKINDER HUNDAL
New Art Exchange celebrated its first year since launch with an extremely strong formative period. In 2009/10 we hosted world class artists, commissioned new work and laid the foundations for a strong visual arts organisation. The psychology of space in Hyson Green, Nottingham provides a backdrop and inspiration to create challenging and exciting contemporary art, representing the expression of diverse voices, often at the fringe of modern Britain. There is of course a growing confidence from minority communities which have slowly but surely come of age. We explored traditional folk and tribal art from India with An(other) Story, and a retrospective of gifted Guyanese artist - Donald Locke with Pork Knocker Dreams.
It was an inspiring and historic moment when Barack Obama was sworn in as the first Black US president, and during this period we launched The Meaning of Style exploring the presence of African Caribbean men over the past 40 years in the UK. It was a huge success both critically and with local audiences, and a great balance of art and popular culture. Our programme over the year saw seminal exhibitions, partnerships, events and learning programmes engage, educate and entertain audiences. Our first major commission, Floating Coffins by Zineb Sedira toured to Iniva (London), Pori Gallery (Finland) and confirmed plans to tour Denmark, Sweden and France in 2010/11. Providing a platform for local artists and artistic groups is an important part of our remit. Hetain Patel’s To dance like your Dad was an example of excellence and Nottingham artist come good. Also the re-emergence of Blackdrop and support to Chill in the Park’s Global Weekend are all key animators of our spaces - examples of local and regional talent. We also launched our Central Gallery, giving local rising artists, students and community groups the opportunity to showcase their visual creations, starting with a colourful pop art expression from the students of Djanogly City Academy.
6
We celebrated 21 years of the Mela in Nottingham and the UK in programming and producing a memorable event across three city spaces, which heralded a huge audience, six international TV crews and over 100 press articles. Our education programme and young people’s group - YARD, went from strength to strength by creating the moving Notice Me inspired by Hayward Touring’s Disposable People. Our role to encourage entrepreneurial flair in the creative sector will continue to grow and be further emphasised in the coming months. As ever I’d like to offer my warm thanks to the artists, our team, board members, funders, partners, volunteers and audiences for your ongoing support and dedication to our artistic and organisational vision.
