CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
New Art Exchange’s (NAE) second year continued to provide an engaging programme, championing challenging and refreshing perspectives from culturally diverse identities, contributing to contemporary British culture in the UK and abroad. This was also a year of uncertainty and change. A new coalition Government were elected and on a mission to reduce national debt and find solutions for the stuttering economy. In so doing the arts sector amongst many would face change, mainly cuts in revenue from the public purse. What we knew of before was certainly not the future. NAE responded by restructuring its staffing, reviewing its programme and introducing efficiencies. It was a difficult period and process but necessary to safeguard the future.
5
For NAE’s second birthday the team worked hard to programme and launch British Art Show 7 (BAS7) and its associated programme amongst many valuable exhibitions and events throughout the year. Launching BAS7 was a major undertaking, further cementing NAE’s leading role in hosting and arranging major exhibitions, events and partnerships regionally and nationally alongside its peers. The journey for NAE continues to introduce new territories and experiences bringing real value and new voices to the fore. NAE continues to engage and enlighten patrons whilst promoting cultural diversity, bringing people and communities together in new and meaningful ways, and enabling better understanding and appreciation of the Arts. I continue to be proud of the organisation’s achievements and would like to thank and credit all the artists who enrich our experiences, the audiences, the NAE team, Board trustees, volunteers and funders for their tireless support and efforts. I hope that you continue to visit and engage with our space and programme and very much look forward to seeing you here at NAE in the near future. Edwin Maxwell MBE Chair of New Art Exchange
CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S REPORT If ever there was a solution in times of uncertainty it is art and creativity. Art fuels and activates beautiful minds, powering thoughts and behaviours that transcend ‘sameness’ or existences numbed by mediocracy. Surely art is the essence in defining who we are, offering enlightened choices and meanings and therefore countering a ‘smash and grab’ 21st century lifestyle. This is why we do what we do here at NAE. We aim to offer new perspectives in art and society. In our second year as a venue space, the exhibitions programme introduced new works and live performance art starting with the talented Harminder Singh Judge who transformed our gallery with his churning sea of milk and highly acclaimed live performance The Modes of Al Ikseer - it was both profound and stunning. Nottingham based - Nadim Chaudry, NAE’s Nottingham Open winner, really captured our imagination with his theatrical skeleton sculptures, dressed in hand woven textiles of the East with Even the Animals - a show that wove ritual, tradition, sexuality, identity and gender - challenging convention and traditions.
Of course the big challenge in this year was to host and launch British Art Show 7 with partners Hayward Gallery, Nottingham Contemporary and Nottingham Castle. We engaged just over 350,000 visitors between us. NAE’s offer, included The Clock by Christian Marclay, which really enthralled and engaged audiences an artwork capturing every aspect of life, time and space through film - it was like a modern-day Mahabharata. It was also great to see new visitors from across the UK and beyond visiting us to see the show. In the same year we also presented Raghu Rai’s inspiring street photography exhibition Invocation to India, supporting Derby Quad’s Format International Photography Festival. Rai’s subject matter invigorated a strong public programme of talks, films, children and family workshops and live dance and music performances. Our international partnerships extended with our first major commission Zineb Sedira’s, Floating Coffins venture further into Scandinavia and then France. Also our local and regional partnerships strengthened as did our national ones especially with Liverpool Biennial.
6
We continued to expand our youth arts programme, YARD, securing BBC Children in Need support giving us scope to work closer with Writing East Midlands to present Lyric Lounge. We also brought international talents from India and Pakistan to Nottingham Mela including Raghu Dixit and Rizwan Muazzam Qawaal. Our artist development programmes provided artist residencies for both local and international artists, and the Central Gallery offered exhibiting space for new visual talent. We also secured Youth In Action funding to host volunteers and creative residents from Egypt and Italy, as part of the European Volunteer Scheme strengthening our professional development programme on an international level. All the progress and achievements in the year cannot be ignored without recognising the commitment and support of the artists, audiences, the NAE team and board trustees, our volunteers, funders and partners for continuing to support the vision, ideology and the creative programme.
