Welcome from the Chief Executive Skinder Hundal

Welcome Friends After the success of our launch last autumn with our inaugural exhibition Next We Change Earth, this season we bring to Nottingham national and international artists working in a wide range of art forms from new media to traditional crafts. We will open in February with our first major commission for 2009, as award winning Algerian-French artist Zineb Sedira transforms our galleries into a giant multi-media feast of sound and imagery with her new piece Floating Coffins. In spring come and experience the first significant exhibition of Indian Folk, Tribal and Intuitive Arts, An(other) Story to take place in the UK including new commissions from India. In January try and catch the remaining weeks of Sokari Douglas Camp’s stunning larger than life steel sculptures in Strength of Feeling as featured by Mark Lawson on BBC Radio 4, Front Row.

In addition to the exhibition programme we offer so much more with evening classes, the YARD & Education programme, a café, family events, live music from Chill in the Park’s Global Weekend in March, to being a host venue for Radiator Festival in January, and the 21st birthday year for Nottingham’s MELA coinciding with the World Cup Cricket 2020 competition in June! We’re only 7 minutes away from the city centre so come and enjoy the social, educational and artistic experiences we have on offer. I look forward to seeing you soon. A ten-year survey of the acclaimed Nigerian-born artist Sokari Douglas Camp. Sokari’s primary material is steel and her work often explores her relationship to contemporary Nigeria and Britain. Race, racism, gender issues, exploitation and violence all surface in her practice. NAE showcases new work based on Nigerian traditional dress, large scale sculptures from collections including her celebrated installation The Living Memorial to Ken Saro-Wiwa. The exhibition opened on the 13th anniversary of the death of Saro-Wiwa.

Biography Sokari Douglas Camp is a sculptor. She was short listed for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square in 2003. She collaborated with Ground Force to create an African Garden for the British Museum, which participated in Africa 05. Sokari Douglas Camp was awarded a CBE in the 2005 Honours List. “Large scale work gives me a chance to explore space and physical scale. Inviting the viewer to participate with the sculpture on a one to one level” Sokari Douglas Camp CBE

Anthony Jadunath’s artwork has evolved radically over a number of years. His work reflects personal experiences and resonates with larger cultural issues, for example, the murder of Stephen Lawrence and the effect this has had on the wider Black community. Red is the dominant feature of work in this exhibition. for the artist it symbolises anger at the way he has been treated over the years. Jadunath’s paintings and sculptures are made up entirely of found objects, re-contextualised and revitalised by his creative palette. The artist is an inspiration as a person who creates work against all the odds.

Biography Often described as an ‘Outsider Artist’, Anthony Jadunath would accept this reflects his current position in the art world. A double amputee, his work speaks of his experiences. Victor Musgrave, the founder of London’s Outsider Archive has housed 20 of Jadunath’s paintings. Novas Arts collects and exhibits a number of his works.

Award winning international artist Zineb Sedira was born to Algerian immigrants and explores notions of displacement and exile through photography video and sound installations. Presenting three significant pieces of Zineb’s work in a sound and visual feast as the galleries of NAE are blacked out and transformed into multimedia spaces! A new commission from NAE, Floating Coffins (2008) is a video and photographic project presented on multiple screens about the world’s largest shipping graveyard outside the harbour city of Nouadhibou, West Africa - a departure point for illegal migrants hoping to reach Europe. Exploring the metaphor between ships left to rot along the coast and the escape from African citizens dreaming of a better future in Europe.

Existing works Saphir and MiddleSea are meditations on the sea as a site of transience and migration, departure and arrival. Saphir* (2006) contrasts Zineb’s, like many others who left, pleasure as she returns to the sights and sounds of Algiers, to some of its disenchanted residents dreaming of escape across the water to Europe. MiddleSea* (2008) explores the transitional nature of the sea and its shifting shores and borders, not only as vessel of movement but as a barrier between the South and North, the East and West. *High Definition video installation

Biography Zineb Sedira is a multi media artist. She graduated from Slade School of Art with a MA in Media in 1997, completing research in Photography at Royal College of art in 2003. In 2008 she exhibited at Wapping Project, London, and Galerie Kamel Mennour, Paris. Zineb was part of the British Art Show 06 and received an Art Council Decibel award in 2004. An(other) Story is the first significant exhibition of Indian Folk, Tribal and Intuitive art to take place in the United Kingdom bringing together a group show of Indian arts and crafts from British collections and new commissions from India. Traditionally Folk, Tribal and Intuitive art has been practiced for centuries throughout India. The work was usually produced by women, and produced as part of seasonal and religious festivals, often on the walls of their houses. In the 1960’s due to an ecological & economic crisis the women who lived near Madhubani in Northern India started to use a different approach to producing their work in order to create a new source of non-agricultural income. The All-India Handicrafts Board encouraged the female artists to produce their traditional paintings on handmade paper for commercial sale. this ‘design intervention’ has been a major reason for the survival and revival of folk and tribal arts ever since. It is only in these past fifty years that the world has come to recognise the men and women who create Folk, Tribal and Intuitive art as “artists” in their own right, seeing their work being included in mainstream contemporary art spaces and exhibitions. ‘An(other) Story will explore work that uses narrative to reflect a world that is fast disappearing and changing, allowing the audience to connect with the journey the work has taken and the future ahead, engaging in a story that has not been touched upon in a contemporary British space before.
