THE SIZZLING AROMA OF MELA IS IN THE AIR! Nottingham Mela is the first UK national Mela and in 2018, 30 years old. As we fold time backwards to the 20th century, 1988, we enter a time zone of cultural revolution where second generation South Asians took control of their cultural destiny and heritage creating Mela UK. Like chicken tikka masala, it spread across the country and began to feature in every major city. Apna Arts under the guidance and drive of Parbinder Singh and the seed investment from Nat Puri (Melton Mede’s Group) gave Britain its first ever national outdoor Asian Music & Arts Festival, held on 6th & 7th August 1988. The theme for Saturday was named Bhangra Heatwave and had the best Bhangra Bands, DCS and Golden Star for example and on Sunday the theme was Sangeet ka Mela and had traditional & classical music featuring Qawwali legend, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. As we (un)fold time forwards to 2018, Nottingham Arts Mela rebrands itself to create a five-day festival across multiple sites featuring the highest quality of intra-cultural expressions representing South Asian arts and culture in the 21st century. For the first time the Mela will feature significantly in Hockley for four days and a preview Mela day at Broadway cinema. The programme starts in Hockley then New Art Exchange culminating in the Arboretum Park bringing back DCS – Shin, featuring the Zoe Rahman Trio, Vidya Patel, Subhash Viman Gorania, a Pop up Library courtesy of Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature, Soumik Datta, Sarah Sayeed, Deepa Rasiya, Jasdeep Singh Degun, Aziz & Dal to name a few... There will be trade markets and yes delicious cuisine with freshly cooked south Asian treats to create the colourful mix that makes Mela so wonderful. What’s more, the weekend at NAE and Arboretum Park are FREE! Come and join us for this special celebration marking 30 years, and signalling many more to come. We are grateful to our funders and investors Art Council England Lottery funding, Nottingham City Council and Purico and to all the artists, audiences, volunteers and teams that support and make this all happen. Happy 30th to Nottingham Arts Mela... we hope to see you all there! SKINDER HUNDAL AND SOOREE PILLAY Executive Producer and co-Artistic Directors Nottingham Mela Network

THE MUSICIANS
THE DANCERS
Harjinder Matharu has been supporting the Mela in Nottingham for a number of years. He is a eminent tabla artist, also sharing his skills as he teaches both tabla and dhol drum at Nottingham Asian Arts Council School of music on a weekly basis. Percussionist and local artist, Biant Singh Suwali, has spent over three decades developing a facilitative approach “Rhythm 4 Life” where social justice, music, performance and the wellbeing of people intermingle. A singer and songwriter, Deepa Nair Rasiya’s South Indian heritage took her, initially, to orthodox Carnatic traditions of Indian vocals. She was drawn to the Hindustani (North Indian) classical tradition, making her style a unique blend of the Northern and Southern technique.
Bhangra Tots is led by Performing Artist, Dancer, Actor and Entertainer, Sohan Kailey. Sohan has performed and provided numerous Bhangra Tots LIVE shows and sessions within schools, community and family festivals which include Geronimo Festival with the stars of CBeebies (BBC Childrens TV Channel). The Manushi Dance Organisation based in Nottingham promotes South Asian Dance and in particular the Indian kathak dance. The director of the company, Vina Ladwa also performed at the first Mela here in Nottingham, then with Nilima Devi’s dance company, back in 1988.
Soumik Datta is a British Indian composer and virtuoso player of the sarod. Trained by the sarod legend, Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta, he works within Indian classical and contemporary music working with Beyonce, Jay-Z, Akram Khan, Nitin Sawhney, Anoushka Shankar, Bernhard Schimpelsberger, Talvin Singh, Joss Stone, Shankar Mahadevan to name a few. Shin Parwana is one of the most prominent Bhangra vocalists in UK and lead singer of Bhangra band, DCS. A respected band in the industry, in 2005 DCS won “Best Group” at the UK Asian Music Awards, in 2008 Shin returning to the awards to gain “Outstanding Achievement” for his work with DCS. The band performed at Nottingham’s first Mela in 1988, and we are delighted to welcome them back for this 30th anniversary.

HISTORY / 30 YEARS OF MEL A INVENTING MELA – ‘A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME’ BY SKINDER HUNDAL
“
AMAZING DANCERS SPIN, WITH AERIAL PERFORMERS SUSPENDED ABOVE; THE SCENT FROM FRESHLY PIPED JALEBIES WAFTS PAST AND IN THE DISTANCE, THERE IS A SOUND OF QAWWALI.
”
KEITH KHAN, ARTIST
On the weekend of 6 & 7 August 1988 the Mela festival in the UK was born. It started here in Nottingham. Day 1 was called Bhangra Heatwave attracting younger audience with the best of British Bhangra and Day 2 Sangeet ka Mela representing classical traditions and heritage. Nottingham kick started a whole suite of Melas across the UK, Bradford following three weeks later. Melas were different as they were not based on faith, unlike many other South Asian festivals, but instead Mela was based on the Asian community taking ownership and creating dialogues with other communities and across the myriad South Asian cultures and identities. Nottingham Mela was established by Apna Arts, one of the founding organisations that formed New Art Exchange. It was driven by Parbinder Singh, initially as a part-time unpaid venture, which involved young people as volunteers. The volunteers came up with the idea to hold a National Festival of Asian Arts and Music in Nottingham. The Nottingham Mela was supported by millionaire business man Nat Puri from Melton Medes Group for a three year period to give it a strong start. The whole romantic dream of the Mela was to have a kambal (blanket) out on the grass, the paranthas, the achar (pickle), the raita, and share in the festival environment, with street performers or performers on stage. It was that notion of what happened in South Asia being brought over here, because that was a gap in people’s experiences. It was connecting with their memories of back home, recreating an element of that and then redefining it with a new generation here.
10 | HISTORY / 30 YEARS OF MELA
Melas held in 1988 were ground breaking because they provided one of the first opportunities for a celebration in a public sphere which encouraged participation from different communities, promoting their arts and culture and making sure there was something there for them to enjoy and be proud of. The late policy advisor Naseem Khan aptly phrased this new wave of cultural ownership and confidence: ‘The Mela actually perhaps had a hand in showing the community back to itself, reflecting a sense of numerical power and creative vibrancy. To actually see something which was writ large across the face of society made you feel good. It was a sense of this being normality opposed to being marginality’ The festival has become stronger than ever, thriving and reinventing itself. Since 2008 it has been developed by Nottingham Mela Network, a collaboration between New Art Exchange and Nottingham Asian Arts Council. In 2018 Mela’s theme of (un)folding time draws from Einstein’s theory on time, defying Newton’s laws of physics, in that it is an illusion to assume time is linear, that past, present and future all happen simultaneously. So as we think back and into the future, into the cosmos, we are already here and there, entering spaces with ideas faster than the speed of light. Going forwards, Nottingham Arts Mela will think and think again, to invent new realities of time and space, bringing society together where the imagination and creativity is at the root.
