This year marks 100 years since World War 1, yet war and conflict rage on of course. As humans we strive for conquests; we are competitive and driven by victories, principles or ideologies, be those small or game changing. Battles are won and lost and we often focus on the conflict, obsessed by battle and its results. However there are many emotions and psychologies at play that surround the act of conflict which are often more complex than the instant gratifications of winning or seeing someone lose. Our featured artist in the Main Gallery is Max Kandhola, a fine art documentary photographer who explores the meditative depths of life that surround conflict through his series The Aura of Boxing. Although boxing is often seen as brutal, Max perceptively captures the grace and discipline central to their performance, and shares their quiet moments of reflection and vulnerability.

Eighteen years of images conclude with recent works featuring undefeated World Super Middleweight Champion from Nottingham, Carl Froch. What a coup! There will be an opportunity to hear Kandhola speak about his work with added insights from academic David Scott and a boxer who has worked closely with the artist. The exhibition coincides with the launch of his highlyanticipated new book, published by Dewi Lewis. The season offers a variety of art and culture. We launch a new food and cultural festival, Melting Pot, an opportunity to share flavours representing the international cultures and cuisines of Hyson Green. Also family friendly sessions, film screenings, debates, gallery tours, dance, music and spoken word performances, young people’s theatre, Artist Occupations, Jugalbandi battles and The Exchange on Sunday paper for your alternative view of the world. I look forward to seeing you over the course of the season. Skinder Hundal Chief Executive, NAE

EXHIBITIONS

THE AURA OF BOXING:

THE BLACK & WHITE SERIES MAX KANDHOLA

Max Kandhola has been documenting boxers and their environment since 1996. This multi-site exhibition* marks the conclusion of the project and the launch of a new major publication on Max’s practice by Dewi Lewis Publishing, available to purchase from New Art Exchange. The essence of the narrative within the collection is based around three British boxers, Howard Clarke, Julius Francis and Robert McCracken, each providing a different context to the story of boxing. For this exhibition, Max has photographed Nottingham born and three time world champion boxer, Carl Froch.

LAUNCH EVENT: FRIDAY 31 JANUARY 2014, 6PM – 9PM

The Aura of Boxing encapsulates Max’s ability to research through the act of photography, using his camera as a means to explore and unveil the depths of life. In this collection the explicit representation of the traditional ‘fight’ is avoided; instead Max explores the many conflicts within the fighter. Kandhola focuses on the ring and the gym as spaces for preparation and meditation in an attempt to capture the boxers’ aura in these moments of psychological intensity; the moments shortly before entering the ring and after leaving it, during which the boxer truly is vulnerable and yet often unnoticed.

The research and development of Aura of Boxing has been made possible with generous support from Nottingham Trent University.

Using boxing as a metaphor, Kandhola’s research reflects upon the psychological gesture of performance in the sport, and the ritual of the individual boxers. In addition, the work documents the attempted flight from inner-city poverty that is common to many young boxers. Exploring how these athletes have been cocooned by the social pressures of the inner-city, Kandhola’s work reveals the impact and presence of mind that manifests within this urban landscape, reflecting the politics of class and clan.

1 FEBRUARY – 21 APRIL 2014 MAIN AND MEZZANINE GALLERY

* Aura of Boxing will be launched at three venues in 2014. In addition to this show at New Art Exchange, two other distinct exhibitions will be presented at Rich Mix, London and Quad’s Chocolate Factory. See our website for full details and dates.

There will be opportunities to hear the artist discuss his work. Please see page 6 and page 9 for details.

Muhammad Ali: The Greatest Dir: William Klein, 1969 Klein documents some of the key moments in Muhammad Ali’s career by showing the people, the events and the media frenzy mobilised by his phenomenal rise. The evolution of Ali into an increasingly politicised cultural icon is narrated through encounters with a range of figures, from his boisterous fans and entourage to Malcolm X, and acute observations of fast-changing cultural landscapes in the USA as well as in Mobutu’s Zaire. VOCAL: Women and their Stories

Over the past 18 months Nottingham Black Archive (NBA) and Nottingham Photographers’ Hub have been working to document the contribution of Black ex-servicemen and their families during World War II. The project, funded by Lottery Heritage Fund, has led to the creation of exciting community resources, including an exhibition, artefact loan box, book and DVD. Join us for the launch of this project!

Wonderland has been working with disparate communities around Nottingham, hearing their stories and mapping their hopes and aspirations to create a symbolic identity for the city. Join the conversation that draws attention to children’s issues such as: health, wellbeing, education, opportunities, displacement and international human rights. The discussion addresses how we can work together to bring change where it is needed most.

This season, to coincide with International Women’s Day, New Art Exchange will be hosting a collaborative drama performance of Arletty Theatre’s Patchwork Lives by Imogen Joyce. The play is made from 100 stories shared by people of Nottinghamshire which explore matters that affect women. The VOCAL debate will be led by issues raised throughout the performance, including themes around violence against women, human rights, gender equality, migration, health and well-being.

Breakin’ the Power Dynamics Jonzi D in Conversation with Eva Martinez

Max Kandhola in Conversation with David Scott and a Guest Boxer

Join Jonzi D, the acclaimed pioneer of British Hip Hop Theatre and Artistic Director of the ever popular Breakin’ Convention, as he discusses the journey of British hip-hop culture, rapping and b-boying since its genesis in the early eighties. Taking his work as the starting point for this conversation, Jonzi will explore the socio-political context and the power dynamics of hip-hop as a Contemporary art form with Eva Martinez Artistic Programmer and producer at Sadler Wells, London. Admission: £3 (£2.00 concession) Age range: All are welcome

This session will provide a unique opportunity to discuss the concept of The Aura of Boxing from the perspective of the artist Max Kandhola, David Scott and a Guest Boxer. Max’s photographic research was created through working intensively and intimately in gyms with the boxers. Experiencing the taste, heat, touch and smell of skin and sweat- even catching blows and punches- was an essential part of the process. Penetrating the boxer’s space in this way was vital in ensuring a deep sensory interrogation of the subject. Through his camera Max endeavours to capture the boxers’ aura - a brief and unique transcendental moment of an extreme heightened awareness. The talk will explore the intense process the artist and boxer went through in creating the images. David Scott will lead the session to extract the reflections of both Max Kandhola and the boxer. Admission: FREE Age range: All are welcome
