Elizabeth price user Group disco, 2009

Marclay is a New York based visual artist and composer whose innovative work explores the juxtaposition between sound recording, photography, video and film. As a performer and iconic sound artist, Marclay has been experimenting, composing and performing with phonograph records and turntables since 1979 to create his unique “theater of found sound.”

With a nod to Samuel Beckett’s humour, Campbell’s work juxtaposes the inherent promise of storytelling with the breakdown of narrative and the inevitable disintegration of meaning. The Glasgowbased artists’ awardwinning film: Bernadette presents an unravelling, open-ended story of the female Irish dissident and political activist, Bernadette Devlin who in 1969, aged 21, became the youngest ever female British MP.

In 2004 Elizabeth Price won the Jerwood Artists Platform Prize. User Group Disco is her second work in an ongoing series, in which each episode unfolds a different room within the notional architecture of a fictional Institutional building. The video is set in the Hall of Sculptures, although when the work opens there is nothing there, as the narrator says, that would deserve the name of ‘sculpture’. The only things visible are the objects themselves - a debris comprised of mundane and ubiquitous objects, utensils and ornaments. What ensues during the course of the video, is a series of reveries and hallucinations concerning these objects.

His latest masterpiece: “The Clock” is a montage of clips from several thousand films, structured so that the resulting artwork always conveys the correct time, minute by minute, in the time zone in which it is being exhibited. The scenes in which we see clocks or hear chimes tend to be either transitional or suspenseful, building up to dramatic action.

Duncan Campbell is interested in fusing documentary and fiction in order to assess both the subject matter and the mode of communicating it... Single screen standard defi nition video with stereo audio Duration: 37 minutes, 10 seconds Courtesy the artist and Hotel, London

Soumik Datta: Rising Stars

Soumik Datta is one of the most acclaimed Sarod players in the world today. His playing takes you on an exploration of time: from slow grandeur to fast, ecstatic rhythms. Having collaborated with Beyonce, Talvin Singh, Akram Khan and Bill Bailey, Soumik is ‘a must for those who find Indian music intimidating’ (Songlines Magazine). In a response to the motif of the comet, Soumik will present new work, developed alongside percussion virtuoso Berhard aka Taalis. With abstract movements on the electric Sarod fused with the colors of the drums, the artists take a closer look at the idea of the comet as a harbinger of change, as a dark mystery, shooting through deep space. The show, gilded by Soumik Datta’s Sarod with its haunting melodies and rich percussive tone, ultimately questions our own perception of self, identity and being like the lonesome comet in this increasingly jam-packed world. Admission: £8 (£6 concessions)

Come and join us for this free and extraordinary 24 hour experience event at New Art Exchange. At this one off event you will be able to enjoy Christian Marclay’s work ‘The Clock’ in its entirety as well as special interventions, music and experiences unfolding throughout Friday night and into Saturday morning. ‘The Clock’ shown Courtesy of White Cube Gallery.
