Short Crafts Events & Activities A selection of courses, workshops and exhibitions extending beyond one day

Stephanie Cole, Illustrator and Designer-Maker Farnham based designer-maker Stephanie Cole has kindly created the illustrations for Craft Month 2015. Stephanie has spent the last two years living in Finland, soaking up inspiration from Helsinki, the World Design Capital 2012, before moving back to the UK in winter, 2014. She is now living happily in Farnham. Her work predominantly explores nature and the shapes, patterns and colours which excite her most. Inspirations come from a fruitful mixture of farmer’s markets, British hedgerows and thought-provoking proverbs and words of wisdom and now from the rich heritage of crafts in her new home town. You can read more about her creative endeavors, adventures and new products and artworks on her blog: http://bystephaniecole.blogspot.co.uk

Month Long Crafts Events & Activities A selection courses and exhibitions extending through October and beyond

Alison Britton OBE, Ceramic Artist and Chair of the Crafts Study Centre Since taking up the Chair of the Crafts Study Centre in January 2015, I have become very aware of the interconnections between the key organisations involved with craft activity in Farnham, and the great range of opportunities for craft practice: from childhood onwards. The Crafts Study Centre plays a very important part in this collaborative and collegiate mix, with its research-led focus and its remarkable collections, set in the context of the University for the Creative Arts. The university has exceptional studio facilities for learning about and working in ceramics, glass, jewellery and metal work, and textiles. Both the Study Centre and UCA are international places, welcoming visitors and students from all over the world, and this adds a special dimension to the sense of place here. Farnham is making very good use of the interplay between town and gown. You can come to Farnham to get a PhD in a craft subject; you can base a lifetime’s research in the archives of the CSC; you can attend a craft course in almost any craft subject you can think of; and you can buy contemporary craft in one of the splendid craft fairs at the Farnham Maltings and year round at the New Ashgate Gallery and the Crafts Study Centre Shop. The term ‘Craft Town’ really does mean something dynamic and particular.

Farnham Sculpture at the Farnham Pottery

Life as a Potter by Luisa Cacciotti Working at 318 Ceramics, which is in what used to be the old Farnham Pottery, I find this location very inspiring. Surrounded by the red brick and wood beams, with old tiles and kiln shelves stored in nooks and crannies, it is hard not to feel the history of the place. The same goes for Farnham as a whole. Wherever you look, you can see signs of the successful market town Farnham used to be. The Tudor cottages with their black beams and the red brick houses constantly remind me of patterns and earth. Apart from the massive inspiration of being somewhere that has such a strong and visible heritage in art and crafts, for me, Farnham blends the traditional with the new and creates an environment that inspires creativity. All my work is thrown on a wheel. In some cases I throw a canvas with accentuated throwing rings and then build the object from various pieces of the canvas. I use either porcelain or black stoneware clay as both have very different tactile qualities that play well together. I also use contracting slip on the canvases to accentuate the feeling of movement. My work is reduction fired as I find the glazes have more depth and again accentuate the tactile quality of the object. www.lucaceramics.com

Born and educated in the south of England, Kim has drawn and painted all her life. She worked for a teacher of art and design for 35 years before moveing to Brittany where she continued to work for 12 years before returning to southern England and making Farnham her home in 2014. This corner of England is where she grew up, so its very much a homecoming. Kim’s work is largly about the landscape but her response to the environment is emotional rather than pictoral. “This is the corner of southern England where I grew up so it is very much a homecoming. I have always loved to roam around ponds, over commons and through meadows. My work is strongly influenced by the seasons, the weather and the time of day. I aim to convey something of my response to the elements and the fleeting images of light, shade and colour in the landscape.

I find the ruins of Waverley Abbey a place of magical mystery and imagination and walking through Bourne Woods I am acutely aware of the patterns of light and the unique pine forest smells, the coolness and the sounds of the wind and the birds. Jewellery by Claire Stiles Clare Stiles’ work focuses on the use of anodised aluminium. Using modern and traditional printmaking techniques she produces colourful work with simple form to emphasise the nature of pattern and images. Clare is the author of ‘Anodized! Brilliant Color and Bold Design’ published by Lark Crafts creators of the 500 Series. She teaches and works from her studio in the Farnham Maltings where she has had a studio since graduating from UCA in 1996. She also Mentors at UCA Farnham. More recently Clare’s work has been exploring the use of recycled materials in jewellery, teaching this as a skill to improve the lives of women in underdeveloped countries. ‘Creating credible jewellery pieces from materials other wise headed for landfill is incredibly fulfilling and can be taught at a very low expense. A few hand tools are all that’s needed to teach people they can produce wonderful pieces of jewellery that they can sell to help sustain themselves and their families whilst helping their local and wider environment’. After raising money through ‘go fund me’ for tools and basic equipment she targets materials that could be easily found locally such as used bicycle inner tubes. Clare took her project to a young women’s charity and and children’s home in Grenada, West Indies in 2014 and hopes to run some workshops on a more local basis in the future.

A number of local shops, organisations and businesses have partnered with makers to celebrate Craft Month by showcasing local makers work in their window or in a key position in their venues to demonstrate the quality and diversity of craft Farnham has to offer. From the 15th September a Trail Map will be available to anyone wishing to follow the trail and investigate and learn more about our local makers and their work.

Academic Choice

The trail is free to participate, and those taking part will have the chance to enter the New Ashgate Gallery’s prize draw whereby one lucky participant will recieve a signed print by theNew Ashgate Gallery director and artist Caroline Jackman. The trail ends on the 31st October and all entries must be submitted by the 6th November. A Trail map can be downloaded from the New Ashgate Gallery website: www.newashgate.org.uk the 15th September or you will be able to pick up a printed copy from any participating venue displaying the poster in their window. The Craft Trail has been organised by the New Ashgate Gallery and funded by Farnham Town Counci.

Millinery by Beverley Edmondson Millinery is the designing and manufacture of hats, historically the term millinery came from, the word ‘Milener’ which was given to dealers in textiles who passed through Milan to gather their goods. Today millinery generally refers to the manufacture, trimming and sales of women’s hats. A person making and selling male hats would generally be called a hatter. Local milliner Beverley Edmondson has been designing and making hats for the past decade, opening her Farnham high street boutique and creative studio, ‘Beverley Edmondson Millinery’ in 2010.

Kawaii - Crafting the Japanese Culture at the Hockey & Foyer Galleries, UCA Farnham

30th October - 11th December

This exhibition brings together 16 Japanese artists using traditional craft skills to engage with Kawaii – the culture of ‘cute’. Kawaii, is a highly successful commercial tool (‘Hello Kitty’ is one of its most famous manifestations) associated with ephemera and fashion. It is the exact opposite of the slow, highly crafted artefacts associated with traditional Japan. The exhibition will be supported by a full colour catalogue, seminars, lectures, workshops and exhibition tours by the curator.

Using a plethora of vintage and traditional materials, such as straws and felts, mixed with modern and newly available materials and technologies including thermoplastic and laser cutting, Beverley’s designs cover everything from outrageous and contemporary ‘Ascot’ hats to vintage styled headpieces, wedding hair adornments and everyday hats. Beverley and her team work closely with clients to design and create their perfect bespoke hat or headpiece for whatever the occasion and outfit requires. The Farnham boutique also offers hats, headpieces and accessories available to buy ‘off the shelf’ and she also has a wholesale collection which is available in other stores and online. During Farnham’s Craft Month of October Beverley is for the first time offering a limited number of millinery workshops to give you an insight and hands on experience into the skills involved in millinery, from the design process through to shaping, assembling, trimming and finishing of hats and headpieces. www.beverleyedmondson.co.uk
