This exhibition celebrates fresh, innovative and bespoke craft and is part of our programme to exhibit some of the most exciting makers to art lovers and collectors.
The New Ashgate Gallery celebrates holidays by the coast and memories of carefree days away from our ever-connected world.
The makers in this exhibition have previously been selected for the Crafts Council’s prestigious Hothouse programme that offers support and mentoring for new makers wishing to break into the sector. This is an opportunity to invest in the future of British crafts and to celebrate past Hothouse participants who have turned their passion for making into successful businesses.
Artists have been painting seascapes for hundreds of years in order to capture the beauty of the natural world. Seascapes speak a common language that we can all relate to; the endless horizon of the sea, sunset walks and the rhythmic sound of the waves.
The makers include: Aimee Bollu (bottom right), Elaine Bolt (top right), Charles Dedman, Tim Evershed, Stella Harding, Christina Hesford, Verity Howard, Emma Johnson, Catriona Mackenzie, Tina McLeod, Heather McDermott, Jode Pankhurst, Angie Parker, Lauren Taylor, Jessica Thorn, Theo Wright and Cristina Zani. The New Ashgate Gallery is a Hothouse partner. Hothouse is a Crafts Council initiative where selected makers take part in a six-month programme which is delivered in partnership across four regions in the UK. The programme includes workshops, 1:1 mentoring and connects the maker to a national network of makers and organisations. It provides the maker with the tools to grow a sustainable and successful business when they need these skills most - at the start of their career. Hothouse is helping to secure the future of British craft, and you as collectors are making it happen.
We are delighted to bring together nine artists and makers whose work encapsulates the positive feelings of enjoyment, calmness and refreshment. This carefully selected exhibition of work aims to evoke feelings of nostalgia and relaxation. These artists create work in a variety of disciplines, from ceramics to oil on canvas - all influenced by colour and the need to capture and interpret that holiday atmosphere. An exhibition of work by Theo Brooks, Sigrun Hill, Jan Lewin-Cadogan, Alison Orchard, Alison Proctor, Isla Rose, Annabelle Shelton, Sonya Vine (above) and Ann Marie Whaley.

JANINE PARTINGTON PRIVATE VIEW: 27 JULY, 6-8PM Bristol-based designer-maker Janine Partington combines the traditional craft of enamelling with fresh, clean, contemporary designs in her latest showcase at The New Ashgate Gallery. Janine will also be exhibiting her new collection of hand carved leather; a bold new direction for Janine as a part of her recent MA studies which we’re delighted to show.

SURREY ARTIST OF THE YEAR 2018
The season includes workshops and free professional development events to artists - please contact the gallery for information and bookings. Surrey Artists’ Open Studios is a county-wide membership scheme, offering the public direct access to artists and makers during an annual event in June, as well as offering artists a range of other benefits including specialist training and professional development. The scheme is thriving with over 370 members, 274 of whom participated in 162 Open Studios and with about 15,500 visitors during two weeks in June.
PRIVATE VIEW: 14 SEPTEMBER, 6-8PM AWARD CEREMONY: 12 OCTOBER 6.30-7.15PM The New Ashgate Gallery invites members of the public to come and vote for their favourite Surrey artist. The Surrey Artist of the Year competition is a partnership between New Ashgate and the Surrey Artists Open Studios to celebrate the wealth of creative talent in Surrey. Starting in 2009; this aspirational exhibition offers a collective of local quality arts and craft as voted for by the public during the hugely popular open studio season. The top scoring artists come together for a programme of events. There is a wide variety of artworks on show, all offering different materials and techniques: ceramics, glass, jewellery, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. We are delighted to announce that the Surrey Artist of the Year Competition will include the following artists from across the county: Ruta Brown, Nicky Chubb, Grace Ellen, Niki Hearnshaw, Diana Jane, Denise Jaques, Susie Lidstone, Jule Mallett, Liane Matthews, Janine Rees, Joe Szabo, Jane Silk, Jean Tolkovsky, Catherine Warren (opposite), Stephanie Wright (below).
Cast your vote! During the exhibition, members of the public are encouraged to vote for an artist; the artist with the most votes from public and judging panel is named Surrey Artist of the Year 2018. Voting must be done in person at the gallery. The winner receives a bursary of £1,000 and a solo show. This year the winning artist is also gifted a stand at Contemporary Art Fair’s annual show at Sandown Park - such an exciting opportunity!
The competition is organised by the New Ashgate Gallery in partnership with the Surrey Open Studios. It is supported by the Patricia Baines Trust and Contemporary Art Fairs, Esher, Surrey. The Surrey Life magazine, which has a monthly section dedicated to the local art scene, is the official media partner of the competition.

PRIVATE VIEW: 14 SEPTEMBER, 6-8PM Chemistry, light, skill and chance are the key ingredients for the recipe of ‘Accidentally on Purpose’. The New Ashgate Team have carefully selected a trio of artists who have all mastered working with their materials and the element of the unexpected within their finished works.
Liphook based artist Su Jameson makes one-off hand built ceramic figurative sculptures. Each piece comes from personal experience, but she tries to explore ideas that are both particular and universal. Her work aims to be thought provoking and invite re-interpretation.
Local photographer Simon Painter will be exhibiting his high energy photographs. Simon uses light and movement whilst shooting to change the focus of an image from the objects in the scene, to the light between those objects.
Lynn Pascoe creates beautiful Cyanotypes informed by the Cornish landscape in which she lives.
Bryony Rich is showing a selection of her wonderfully volcaniclooking Raku fired ceramics.

A practicing artist of fifteen years, Mary specialises in creating conceptual large scale installations, using sculpture, light and sound. Mary speaks about her work and of her installation ‘New Dawn’which is on permanent display in the Houses of Parliament; created to reflect the passionate, and at times scandalously bloody, historic campaign for women’s suffrage.
Emily Jo Gibbs is a British Artist who over the last two decades has established an international reputation for her delicate textiles. Emily gives an illustrated talk about her creative journey and making work with a personal narrative.

Parking is available in the pay and display Waggon Road carpark in front of the gallery.
