PETE JACKMAN
MICHELLE FREEMANTLE
Icelandic Landscapes
Landlines
21 April - 2 June
21 April - 2 June The New Ashgate Gallery welcomes back Pete Jackman. Pete’s new drawings and paintings are interpretations of landscapes and objects within the landscape in a semi abstract form. The current work is a result of recent visits to the north and south of Iceland. The Icelandic landscape has a pristine, raw and dynamic quality, looking brand new and ancient at the same time. It is physically and visually challenging, this informs Pete’s mark making and colour palette.
Living in the East Yorkshire Wolds Michelle is surrounded by agriculture and a constant visual source of changing field colours and markings. Yellow oil seed rape being predominant in late spring, kick started the palette for this range. Being elevated, there are some great vistas to be seen when coming off the Wolds: field markings, tractor scarring, fence and hedge boundaries all blend to create my ‘Landlines’ series.’ Michelle Creates functional ceramics that are tactile and visually pleasing, using a mix of hand built, press mould and thrown techniques. Lines and text, often snippets of thoughts or poetry written during travels, are inscribed into the surfaces and slips applied. Michelle will be showing her ceramics alongside work by Pete Jackman. . DUNCAN ROSS Ceramics 21 April - 2 June Duncan Ross’s work is thrown and burnished using many layers of a fine terrasigillata slip with resist and inlay decoration. Duncan began working with sigillata to develop a rich surface with a combination of form and pattern that would be integral to the clay. His work is represented in notable collections abroad as well as in the collections of the V&A, Fitzwilliam Museums and the Walker Art Gallery among many others in the UK. PETE JACKMAN, Lava & Moss

21 April - 19 May We are delighted to present a carefully curated ‘Celebration of Illustration’. An often overlooked art form with a diverse and far reaching remit, from cartoons to book covers scenic sketches to branding and decoration.

BARBARA BEAUMONT New Paintings
21 April to 21July
21 April - 2 June This collection of new work is Barbara’s response to the loss of green and wild spaces. As more open land is covered by buildings, it leaves less countryside to keep us in touch with the natural world. We forget what was there before - ghosts of trees.
A specially selected collection of ceramics, glass, jewellery and textiles - a must-see for gifts and special occasions.

9 June – 21 July
Su Roger’s geometric designs are inspired by designs often seen in Aztec and African art as well as the natural organic world we see in our immediate environment. Most importantly, her sketch book is always at hand to record those special occasions from which new designs will spring.
Our much loved favourite Fiona Pearce shares her passion for the beautiful Surrey and Hampshire countryside in her artwork. Her daily runs in the local countryside are her greatest inspiration as well as her travel to France has inspired the recent collection of Sunflowers. Fiona works mainly in acrylic, applying thick layers with credit cards, fingers and occasionally a brush. She has a degree in art from the West Surrey College of Art and Design in Farnham, Surrey completing her Diploma in Design specialising in typography and graphics.
Su’s ceramics are hand-built using a traditional coiling method, predominantly from white earthenware clay and colour is created with slip. The grounded, streamlined shapes, vibrant colours and modern sgraffito designs belie little of the roots of the ancient techniques she uses. In 2009, Su graduated from the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham and now runs Bus Stop Pottery from her studio in Hampshire. As well as teaching regular ceramics courses and workshops, Su shows her work regularly at local and national ceramics fairs. SU ROGERS, Large Vessel
Maker in Focus: Jane Muir 9 June – 21 July We love the work of ceramicist Jane Muir who specialises in idiosyncratic hand painted figures representing a witty and uncluttered observation of the world. Figures that stand alone or placed in an architectural landscape are hand modelled, allowing her the freedom to sketch with clay and develop ideas during the making process. Jane Muir studied ceramics at Central St Martins School of Art and the Royal College of Art. Since leaving the RCA in 1992 she has exhibited widely, notably in Ceramic Contemporaries and the V&A.
