29 April - 17 June
We are delighted to welcome Emma Dunbar back for her much anticipated new solo exhibition. Emma paints in Hampshire and Cornwall. Her attraction to colour and the decorative qualities in everyday objects provide the foundation for her art. Emma works mainly on board in acrylic, occasionally incorporating collage with gold and silver leaf. Her training as a printmaker is evident: both in the use of blocks of flat colour and in the way she scratches through surfaces to reveal pre-laid colours underneath. This exhibition draws inspiration from Emma’s daily walks and trips to Greece, Iceland and Austria. Beautiful fruits in the
Virginia Graham is the New Ashgate Winner, Festival of Crafts (2016). Her ceramics are an eclectic amalgamation of nostalgic form and imagery, transforming the ordinary past by drawing on a wide range of domestic traditions. Virginia’s handmade pieces range from teapots to jewellery, and she also creates one-off pieces that incorporate precious stones, metal and found objects. The combination of slip casting and hand building techniques creates her signature style. Virginia makes reference to historical wares including the familiar blue and white stripes of Cornish Ware as well as industrial plumbing and Victorian fabrics. The resulting pieces are eclectic and precious with a playful humour yet at the same time are ordinary reminding us of that bygone era when afternoon tea was a serious business. Virginia lives and works in the Wiltshire town of Corsham.

Alex McCarthy’s work is inspired by the artist’s fascination for touch. His tactile work is inspired by textures that surround us such as; tree bark, natural rocks, cracking paint and marine life. Each artwork is thrown and fired several times: metal oxides add depth whilst the gold, platinum and copper lustre add a sense of opulence. Alex has a First Class Honours from the Cardiff School of Art and Design and has won several awards including the Craft & Design Selected Makers Award. He also completed the Crafts Council’s prestigious Hothouse programme for the best new talent in crafts. Alex McCarthy, Platinum Lustre Vase
