2015 SouthCoast Women’s Forum a Success!

By Lynne Mastera, Chair of the 2015 SouthCoast Women’s Forum Planning Committee Every year the committee works hard to find interesting and inspiring topics along with the professional business women leaders to relay their own personal stories. They also have an opportunity to network and share some of their own personal stories. This year the committee decided on a panelist discussion for our forum. Our panelist group was moderated by Lee Blake, who shared some of her own inspirational story.

The New Bedford Area Chamber held its annual SouthCoast Women’s Forum on May 7th, at Hawthorne Country Club. This event has been successfully connecting women business owners and operators, educating women on a full array of business topics,

Chamber Member Spotlight: WJFD 97.3 FM “We also play all the major soccer games; we have a Woman’s lifestyle show, a political show, a Fado show and Cabo Verdean and Brasilian shows,”

Middle-age has never looked so good! At 40 years, WJFD 97.3 FM is the largest Portuguese radio station in North America and the only FM 50,000 watts in New England, transmitting in Portuguese 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. “We are an entertainment radio station with live DJ’s everyday, from 6 am until 11 pm, playing the latest Portuguese and world music hits,” explained Paulina Arruda, Co-Owner of WJFD.

With over 400,000 listeners to date, Arruda realizes how important the community is to WJFD since they turned on their transmitter on June 23, 1975 and began local broadcasting. “Our business exists because of the Portuguese community and we are proof of how big the Portuguese community in the area is and of how important the community is,” states Arruda. “We have been transmitting for 40 years thanks to the support of the community. We feel very grateful to them and we also feel the responsibility of maintaining the Portuguese language, music, culture and history, not only for all the Portuguese generations, but to all other cultural groups.”

A member of the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, since 2011, Arruda finds tremendous value in that her membership allows her to connect with a network of business professionals throughout the SouthCoast region. “Being part of the Chamber has been very important to us. It has been a way to network and get the “word out” about WJFD and also let other business know about the strength of the Portuguese in the area,” said Arruda. “It has also been important to meet other business people in the area and share experiences, as well as for businesses to come and all work together for the better of all businesses and the community.” If you would like to hear more about WJFD FM, please tune into 97.3 FM, or, feel free to log on to their website at www.wjfd.com.

On-the-job training is a training strategy that the workforce investment system can offer local employers and job seekers. This strategy is particularly important during the current economic environment. On-the-job training puts unemployed workers back to work earning a wage while receiving

training. Even better, employers can be reimbursed for the costs associated with training this new employee. WHY IS ON-THE-JOB TRAINING IMPORTANT? With many employers still reluctant to hire new staff and many skilled individuals facing extended unemployment, On-the-job training is experiencing resurgence. It can get job seekers back to work and train them to meet employer needs. This also allows people to continue to draw a paycheck while learning new skills. Both employees and employers can see the benefit from day one. Concerns of employers not interested in the long term unemployed (LTU) are being corrected. Within your own establishments, you need to throw out any misconceived thoughts about the majority of the LTU.

SouthCoast Jobs Fair Data The First Annual “SouthCoast Jobs Fair” took place on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at the Tripp Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Dartmouth. The “SouthCoast Jobs Fair,” a regional partnership between the Chamber, Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Greater New Bedford Career Center, UMass Dartmouth and Bristol Community College, helped connect over 115 local, regional and national employers with over 1,000 local job seekers and students. Employers offered internships, entry level jobs, jobs for those with a GED or high school diploma-equivalence, and those requiring as much as a doctorate. The chamber recently polled all 117 participating employers asking a series of questions leading to data that indicates the SouthCoast Jobs Fair led to nearly 600 regional hires in full-time, part-time or seasonal jobs. Ian Abreu, the chamber’s manager of workforce and business development, said the April 8 job fair on the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (UMD) campus featured more than 1,000 attendees and more than 100 employers, offering positions that spanned a diverse range of industries and professional experience. Responses from employers have indicated the fair led to hires for 380 full-time jobs, 107 part-time jobs and 100 seasonal jobs, in addition to 383 paid or unpaid internships, Abreu said.
