The New Bedford Seaport Chowder Festival or “Chowderfest” has grown into a staple community event attracting thousands of residents and tourist from all over the region to the beautiful South Coast! This year’s highly anticipated Chowderfest will be held on Sunday, October 13th from 12:00 to 5:00pm, under the tent on City Pier 3. Taking place in the heart of New Bedford’s historical District, Chowderfest is an exciting way to spend the afternoon celebrating local recipes and traditions with friends and family! Every year, roughly 20 restaurants and food establishments gather for this friendly but fierce competition, battling for the coveted Chowderfest trophy. Local food establishments prepare delicious and unique chowders, soups, and quahogs for our tasting pleasure! These delicious samples are then voted on by both the people and a panel of expert judges.

Again, this year there will be VIP Chowderfest tickets for $35.00. VIP ticket bonuses include early admission (one hour early, 11:00 am), an extra vote in each category, a free drink voucher, awesome take home souvenirs and entry into the door prize giveaway which is a gift basket filled with local restaurants gift cards valued over $200.00. Regular ticket prices are $15.00 prior to event and $18.00 the day of the event. Tickets for children ages 6 -12 are $5.00 and children 5 and under are no charge. Bristol County Chamber and SouthCoast Chamber Announce Integration

The Boards of Directors of the Bristol County Chamber and the SouthCoast Chamber agreed to integrate under a single corporate umbrella, effective January 1, 2020. At separate meetings held on June 27, the Boards of Directors of the Bristol County Chamber and the SouthCoast Chamber agreed to integrate under a single corporate umbrella, effective January 1, 2020. With these votes, the two chambers have declared a goal of establishing a (yet unnamed) non-profit corporate entity with both existing chambers as affiliates. The chambers have engaged in a six-month process through Board appointed representatives of each chamber and professional facilitation. making due diligence recommendations including the following: whether to integrate, the governance model, financial viability, and the leadership model. Their recommendations formed the basis of the due diligence documents and the final Board resolutions on which the two Boards voted. The Boards of the two founding organizations provided the Integration Task Force with several non-negotiables to help frame their recommendations that included: maintaining two corporate offices, building an inclusive governance model, and building efficiencies without loss of staff positions. Kim Perry, Chair of the SouthCoast Chamber Board, said, “This integration has always been about impacts, not efficiencies. While we knew that efficiencies would emerge, the staff and leadership of each organization are its most important assets. Each organization has a long and storied history supporting the communities each serves, and in building this new model, we needed staff and volunteer leadership to know that their

continued service was necessary to the organization’s success. All companies represented on the Board will continue that service.” With combined memberships of nearly 1,600 businesses, representing tens of thousands of employees in the South Coast region, the new chamber will become the second largest in the Commonwealth in number of member companies. Once brought together, the new chamber will serve the entire South Coast region – from Wareham to eastern Rhode Island. The new chamber will maintain existing offices and staff, but new efficiencies will emerge along with a series of superior value propositions for all sized businesses, especially the small and micro-businesses that make up the vast majority of every chamber’s membership base. Brian LeComte, Chair of the Bristol County Chamber Board, said “These two healthy organizations, once combined, will present new and exciting opportunities for our business

members that only scale can provide. Whether it is a single, unified voice on Beacon Hill and in Washington or small business opportunities for growth through larger and more targeted programs for business growth, this new chamber will build on the successes of the past and reach for new heights in supporting our region’s business base.” The new organization will operate with a Co-CEO model, retaining Mike O’Sullivan, the current CEO of the Bristol County Chamber, and Rick Kidder, the current CEO of the SouthCoast Chamber, and with current technology no necessity to relocate staff. Mike O’Sullivan said, “Rick and I have worked out with the Task Force a delineation of responsibilities that will allow members and staff absolute clarity regarding whom to contact and how office operations will take place in order to maximize efficiency and productivity.”

Good News! The Diocesan Health Facilities are teaming up with Organix Solutions and ABC Disposal Service, Inc. NEW Zero Waste Solutions facility in Rochester, MA to reduce the impact of our waste, particularly our food waste. As we look for new ways to evolve as a better place to live and work, we’re moving forward as the first healthcare group in the state of Massachusetts to implement the separation of food waste from our current waste disposal. This is in an effort to reduce about 35% of our current trash which is food waste from ending up in a landfill. Instead, we will be using Organix new certified compostable green bags for our food waste which we’ll be using across our health facilities to implement organics recycling. This food waste will be utilized for composting in our region. Bristol Community College Names New Vice President for Academic Affairs Suzanne Buglione, Ed.D. of Fall River, Mass., has been appointed vice president for academic affairs at Bristol Community College. Dr. Buglione, enters her new role after working at Bristol Community College for the past 7 years. She earned her Bachelor of Science in natural science and a Master of Education in health education, community health from Worcester State University in Worcester, Mass. and Doctor of Education in higher education leadership, administration from the University of Massachusetts Boston in Boston, Mass. She has worked in higher education for more than 20 years, as both an innovative leader and instructor. As vice president for academic affairs, Dr. Buglione will provide professional leadership that fosters the highest teaching, learning and academic service standards, as well as student and institutional outcomes. Dr. Buglione will

I am honored that this building will be dedicated to Bruce Portas, a 22-year veteran of our armed forces and a Fairhaven resident. His son, Chad, and the Portas family are the lead donors to this project, and I ask them to stand be recognized so that we may all thank you.” Reid further stated, “With this new outreach center, we will be able to expand our reach to serve veterans living throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. Preparing Our Future Workforce through Internships & Activities By: Brianna Alves, Youth Services Coordinator

The Greater New Bedford Connecting Activities Partnership (GNBCAP) is a Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education initiative that supports college and career readiness for local high school students. Through the GNBCAP, students achieve additional learning hours by extending from the classroom to the workplace, providing them skills for career exploration and help build career awareness. In addition, we broker work-based learning opportunities through internships for local high school students with regional leading employers. With your help, we are gearing up to provide more career opportunities for the next academic year!

Career Fairs are designed to help students build awareness on Career pathways. Company Tours are created to help student’s exploration on Career pathways.

“My job at Toyota of Dartmouth is to recruit employees from vocational automotive schools. But when I did a job fair at New Bedford High School, I found so many potential employees that I would never see if it wasn't for this program. Hello! My name is Meighread Dandeneau and I’m a recent graduate from Fitchburg State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Communications Media. I chose to do my internship with the SouthCoast Chamber to strengthen my marketing skills through event assistance and business connectivity on the South Coast. I’ve really enjoyed my time so far, helping with multiple networking events and creating written content for the Chamber. Already, I feel much more in tune with the commerce of the South Coast. I feel like I’m getting great experience to help me enter the workforce. I look forward to working on the SouthCoast Chamber’s 14th Annual Chowderfest preparations!

SouthCoast Women's Forum Continues Interview Training Program at UMass Business School Seeks Coaches to Inspire Submitted by Paul Bacdayan, UMass Dartmouth

The SouthCoast Chamber annual Women’s Forum took place on Tuesday, May 21st at the Rosebrook Event Center. The program, entitled “Boldly Breaking Barriers,” featured two guest speakers in the unique combination of an interactive expo, networking event, and luncheon. The first of the speakers, Shaleen Title, is a commissioner on the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission specializing in social justice. Her work focuses on empowering women of color to contribute to the drug policy reform and the cannabis industry overall. In her “boldly breaking barriers” speech, she defined the setbacks and successes she’s had as a commissioner exploring an uncharted area of Massachusetts commerce.

Ashley Paré was second to speak at the forum. The CEO and founder of “Own Your Worth,” an organization dedicated to helping women negotiate pay raises and overcome workplace discrimination, Ashley Paré advocates for equal pay and female involvement in corporate America. The forum was moderated by Shelley Cardoos, Director of Programs at EforAll South Coast. The event was well-attended, with a turnout of 130 guests and 26 sponsors/exhibitors from a variety of industries across Southeastern Massachusetts, including non-profit, healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and marketing businesses.

The Charlton College of Business at UMass Dartmouth seeks business professionals to help students develop interview skills. Volunteers can choose between mock job interviews and exploratory informational interviews. Mock job interviews use a speed-dating format that allows you about 10 minutes with each student. Interviewers ask standard questions and provide coaching on the responses. Informational interviews involve about 40 minutes of Q & A with a group of students interested in your occupation, industry or career path.

“These events help students make better career choices and interview more confidently, plus it’s a great reason to visit the campus and meet other volunteers” says management professor Paul Bacdayan, an event organizer. Invitations will go out in late August for events in mid-October. Volunteers usually spend about 2 hours on campus. To get an invitation, e-mail pbacdayan@ umassd.edu.
