Legislative Luncheon to Feature Governor Charlie Baker The New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce will bring Beacon Hill to the SouthCoast when it hosts Governor Charlie Baker as the keynote speaker at its 2015 SouthCoast Legislative Luncheon on Thursday, June 11th. The event will he held at Hawthorne Country Club, 970 Tucker Road, Dartmouth, MA from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Check-in for the event starts at 11:15 a.m., with the luncheon beginning at 11:45 a.m. The cost of the event is $45 for members and $55 for non-members, with tables of ten also available. 2015 SouthCoast Jobs Fair an Overwhelming Success The First Annual “SouthCoast Jobs Fair” took place on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at the Tripp Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Dartmouth.

Martin Sippican, New Bedford Public Schools, Wal-Mart, The Bristol County Sheriff ’s Office, KAM Realty and Rockland Trust.

The “SouthCoast Jobs Fair,” a regional partnership between the Chamber, Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Greater New Bedford Career Center, UMass Dartmouth and Bristol Community College, helped connect over 115 local, regional and national employers with over 1,000 local job seekers and students.

“What helped make our event so successful was the fact that we welcomed a wide-range of different employers offering different career opportunities,” said Ian Abreu, Manager of Workforce & Business Development at the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce. “It didn’t matter if you had a GED-level education, or a PHD in a specific field, we had employment opportunities for everyone. We strategically set this event up in such a manner.”

Employers offered internships, entry level jobs, jobs for those with a GED or high school diploma-equivalence and those requiring as much as a doctorate.

The Greater New Bedford Connecting Activities Partnership Seeks New Bedford High School Academy Internship Host Sites for Summer 15’.

The Greater New Bedford Connecting Activities (CA) Partnership is a Department of the Elementary & Secondary Education initiative that supports college and career readiness for local high school students. Through the CA Partnership, students achieve additional learning hours by extending the classroom to the workplace, while providing them with an adult role model to offer support with one-to-one career mentoring. We broker workbased learning opportunities and paid internships for area students and, with your help, we are gearing up to provide a historic 100 paid internships this summer!

As a valued employer in our region, we are inviting you to be a partner in this initiative. In collaboration with New Bedford High School, we are seeking paid internship opportunities for rising juniors and seniors who are part of NBHS’ Academies. Through this endeavor, you will have the distinct opportunity to provide an authentic work experience and shape your future workforce. Typical summer internship opportunities consist of 120 hours of paid work experience, which can be tailored to your specific needs. For example, students may work 20 hours per week for 6 weeks, or 25 hours per week for 5 weeks. In addition, these internships can be project based and several interns can participate on one project. Please join the many Massachusetts businesses that have provided these experiences throughout the

state. During FY14, the statewide CA initiative boasts the following outcomes: • Employers invested $13.9 million in wages to support student internships • 10,324 students were placed in internships at 3,510 employer sites • 7,663 (74%) students utilized the Massachusetts Work-Based Learning Plan to structure learning experiences and productivity at their worksite

The Buzzards Bay Swim is a fun community event that supports a great cause: clean water in Buzzards Bay. Swimmers complete a 1.2-mile open water course across outer New Bedford Harbor, beginning in the South End of New Bedford and ending at Fort Phoenix Beach State Reservation in Fairhaven. Now in its 22nd year, the Buzzards Bay Swim is a signature outdoor event for the SouthCoast. The Swim draws participants of every age, ability and fitness level. Some swimmers form teams with their friends, families and fellow swim team members. Firsttime swimmers are also welcome and encouraged to participate. Over 300 swimmers are expected to participate in this year’s Swim, hailing from communities across southeastern New England and around the United States. Already, more than 225 swimmers from 13 states have signed up to swim on June 20. Junior Achievement Seeking Golfers for World-Class Tournament at TPC Boston

On Tuesday, May 26th Junior Achievement of Southern Massachusetts will hold its annual IRONMAN Golf Tournament at the TPC Boston. “This event is such a fun day for avid golfers,” said Ms. Paradis. “Participation means exclusive access to this exceptional course and its facilities, with 36 holes of no-waiting golf.” The event, which raises critical funds

for local Junior Achievement programs in K-12 classrooms, allows players to compete in a Ryder Cup style format at the home of the renowned Deutsche Bank Championship. In addition to two rounds of golf, participation in the event includes breakfast, lunch and a dinner reception, where prizes are awarded for fundraising excellence, golf performance (such as longest drive and most total golf points, as well as a team prize), and to the overall IRONMAN Champion. SCYPN V.I.P (Volunteer Initiative Project) May 20th at Sharing the Harvest

Join other young professionals for an afternoon of volunteering at the Sharing the Harvest Community Farm at the Dartmouth YMCA on Weds. May 20th from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sharing the Harvest Community Farm is a non-profit, volunteer-driven farm that aims to help fight hunger in our community. It was established in 2006 to reduce hunger, create volunteer stewardship and increase agricultural education. Charged with the hunger relief mission, as well as community stewardship and agricultural education, Sharing the Harvest hosts thousands of volunteers each season working together to grow food for our neighbors. In the past 9 months, Ms. Isabelle has shown herself to be a successful and skilled employee. Mark Jardin, the Employment Manager at Lifestream, Inc. says, “We are very proud of all that Sarah has accomplished at her place of employment.” Ms. Isabelle’s duties at Wendy’s include sweeping and cleaning the dining room, washing windows, emptying trash, wiping food trays, changing cartridges in the soda machine, making coffee and tea, stocking condiments and cleaning the fireplace located in the dining room.
