Chamber Update
A brief report on Chamber Activities from the President/CEO Every new year is a re-birth of sorts. We make resolutions, and sometimes we keep them. We make resolutions we may not be able to keep, but if we fixed everything about ourselves in one year, what good would the next new year be? The New Bedford Area Chamber is no different from the rest of us as individuals. The Chamber also makes resolutions, and all we resolve is designed to make the member experience better and better every day and to place the needs of the member at the core of what we do.

The Chamber helps the business community grow by growing ourselves, and the year ahead is targeting membership growth as a priority. You, our loyal members, can help us grow through your referrals.

NBSO Announces Educational Program Collaboration The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce a new collaboration with the Buttonwood Park Zoo for the 2015-2016 “Learning in Concert” program, Adaptations in Motion: Animal and Musical. This fall, an NBSO trio of musicians and Education Director, Terry Wolkowicz traveled to over fifty area schools to perform live music in an interactive, cross-curricular program. In this first phase of the program, children heard how classical music demonstrates the same principles of locomotion as shown in various species. Musical compositions were paired with specific types of locomotion that trace motion from ancient fish swimming in water, to Tiktaalik, the revolutionary discovery marking the fish that first emerged from water, to modern day tetrapods that crawl, climb, jump and run on land today. Following the in-school performances, all children received a free pass to the Buttonwood Park Zoo. and a special TRAM map to continue the exploration of motion in animals and music. The zoo has designated TRAM stops posted throughout the zoo where children can observe different types of animal locomotion. While at each TRAM stop, a parent can scan a QR code on their phone which will then launch a video performance of our NBSO trio playing the musical piece that matches the specific motion of each species (crawling, flying, running, climbing, swimming).

Carola’s teaching time at Gomes is due to the generosity of the New Bedford Police Department, with art supplies being donated by the New Bedford Police Union and Dr. Christopher Wolkowicz.
At the Young People’s Concert on February 29, 2016, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra will perform the World Premiere of Adaptations in Motion, where over 4,000 student composers, using various compositional techniques, skillfully create musical adaptations that replicate through music the gradual progression of ancient species who moved from swimming and gliding in water to moving, walking or running on land. The concert will also feature scientific illustrations completed by the students, as well as student video interviews and footage collected from our yearlong exploration.

News from the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (WIB) Workforce Development in Today’s World Credentialing By George Hempe, Executive Director / CEO, Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (WIB) Both employers and workers today are challenged with new realities and unknowns that current public policies and programs were not designed to address. Many factors have and are contributing to this new frontier such as The Great Recession and ever-changing industry and technology landscapes not to mention the difference in the timelines of how quickly things change today and our present educational models.
still the same: a well-educated, highly skilled, workforce which would be competitive by meeting the needs of the private and public sectors. Credentialing is one goal of the new Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). Regionally all training and education that the GNBWIB engages in through its program operators should result in a recognized credential. Below are just a few examples.
These changes include technological advancements at speeds beyond training capacity, globalization, the volatility of the labor markets, limited resources, and changes in demographics. Policies in Workforce Development and education must be literally transformed to more effectively match the needs. The goal is
Currently we are working with our advanced manufacturing consortia in the implementation of training for our employers, employees, and job seekers that will lead to a recognized credential. In this way not only the employer knows what they are getting but the employee/ job seeker better understands why and
14
where there training will lead them. We are also working on creating new pipelines of potential workers for this industry cluster. We have training for youth with our provider (New Directions) that leads to a recognized certificate in “customer service”. This is very helpful especially for youth because many employers are apprehensive about the job readiness of our less experienced workforce. Our Career Center (also operated by New Directions) offers training in Microsoft Office, Career Readiness 101, and other types of training that have recognized credentials. This increases the marketability of the labor force participating in these trainings and their value overall to the employers. The GNBWIB and its partners will continue
to follow WIOA’s guidelines and insist that all training/educational programs and courses lead to marketable skill sets that have been validated by the regional employers of our area. The GNBWIB is focused on creating a workforce system, not only managing workforce programs. The primary difference is a system supports the “collective impact” of many stakeholders coming together and aligning their strategies and resources to reach greater outcomes and objectives. In this manner, a more sustainable workforce can be developed indefinitely verses a series of programs that will lead to limited training but has less impact on the region and its economy.
