New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce Announces New Member Campaign The New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce will be holding a Membership Campaign on September 13th & 14th. This new member campaign will include reaching out to nearly 5,000 businesses in the Greater New Bedford area that are not yet benefiting from Chamber membership. The campaign will include an email invitation and personal phone calls from business leaders in the region encouraging them to join the Chamber. Lynn Motta, First Vice President of the Commercial Services Division, will chair this special campaign. In addition, nearly 80 business leaders have volunteered to help recruit new members to the Chamber by sharing information about their positive experiences and the many benefits of Chamber membership. “As a membership organization, our members are the lifeblood of our organization and it’s beneficial for us to add

His natural way of working with people with intellectual and physical disabilities and his talents in working in human service administration soon paved his way to a path of promotions through the organization. He has held nearly every management position at CCI since 1985, as the Manager of the Fall River Employment Services, Director of Employment and Residential Services, Regional Director and Vice President of Programs covering the Cape Cod, Plymouth, New Bedford, and Fall River Areas and finally to his current promotion in September, 2015 as Chief Operating Officer. This position is responsible for overseeing a $15M budget and over 300 employees. “Joe is an invaluable member of the Community Connections team. He is well liked and respected by his fellow employees, colleagues, people we serve and many of their family members. Dr. Whitney Greene takes the helm of the Zoo’s veterinary hospital. Buttonwood Park Zoo Director, Keith Lovett stated that “we are very excited for Dr. Greene to lead the veterinary programs at the Zoo. She brings a great mixture of education, experience, and energy to this position.” Greene who grew up in both South Dartmouth and on a farm in northern New Hampshire attended Friends and Tabor Academy. Dr. Greene was first exposed to the world of veterinary medicine while interning at the Living Seas in Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort. She holds an

undergraduate degree in Biology from Connecticut College and a Masters of Science in comparative immunology from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Whitney attended Western University of Health Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine in California which emphasizes problem based learning and hands-on experience. She completed rotations at San Diego Zoo, Mystic Aquarium, San Diego Zoo Wild Safari Park, Georgia Aquarium, Denver Zoo, Angell Memorial, The Marine Mammal Center (Sausalito, CA), the US Navy Marine Mammal Program, and specialty hospitals throughout California. Additionally, Dr. Greene interned at the Buttonwood Park Zoo veterinary hospital in the summer of 2013. Dr. Greene moved back to Massachusetts after completing her studies and recently celebrated her marriage to Josh Huntsman. She has served as a teaching assistant in Anatomy and Physiology at UMASS Dartmouth and has published research papers on dolphin cognition and behavior and comparative immunology. Dr. Greene is excited to join the team at Buttonwood Park Zoo and says she “is eager to bring more research and educational programs to the zoo and is excited to work with rescue, rehabilitation and conservation”. In her role as the BPZ Veterinarian, Dr. Greene will lead all of the Zoo’s veterinary activities including programs focused on general veterinary care, preventative animal medicine, animal nutrition, wildlife rehabilitation, and animal wellness. Additionally, Dr. Greene will be highly involved in further developing the Zoo’s endangered species conservation and research science programs.

Southeastern Massachusetts Visitors Bureau The Southeastern Massachusetts Visitors Bureau hosted Francois-Laurent Nivaud Executive Director of the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism on June 29th in Bristol County. The trip included a tour of the region, highlighting many local attractions. In the beginning of June, a group of travel journalist from the United Kingdom and Germany, visited the region on their tour around New England. A special thank you to Westport River Wineries and The Westporter for hosting the group.

The SCYPN June “Off the Clock” was held at the community Boating Center in New Bedford. Guests had the chance to go for a sail and learn the basics on sailing.

Awards, Officers Announced at Workforce Board’s Annual Meeting The Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (WIB) held its Annual Meeting June 22, 2016. At the meeting, Mayor Jon Mitchell and outgoing Chair Joseph Michaud congratulated the WIB, its staff and partners for many successes. After serving for the past four months in the capacity of Acting Executive Director/CEO, James D. Oliveira was permanently appointed to the position by a unanimous vote of the WIB. Jim’s annual review highlighted a number of high points for the WIB including adding nearly 1000 new jobs, 400 employer engagements and over 700 youth served through the New Directions Career Center and Youth Annex. Also highlighted was over $2.3mn in grant collaboration and activity in FY 2016, including a very successful Office of Housing and Economic Development Advanced Manufacturing Training Grant which trained 23 job seekers in advanced manufacturing, LEAN and 14

welding and has resulted in a 70% placement rate to date.

Four awards were given in recognition and appreciation to the following WIB members: Joseph L. Michaud, Esq., for his year of service as Chair; Carl W. Taber, for his 3 years of service as Treasurer; David N. Slutz, for his 5 years of service on the Board (departing the WIB); Ron Melbourne, for his 2 years of service as Chair of the Youth Council of the WIB.

Guest speaker at the meeting was Jenn James, Undersecretary to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, who gave a timely update on the State’s approach to implementation of the new Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA). Special Guest was former New England Patriot Matt Light of the Light Foundation. Mr. Light introduced four New Bedford entering freshmen who will join the Foundation’s Leadership Training program. Devin Moreira, Anton Scurry, Jr., Ethan Medeiros and Tyhon Pina, Jr., will be part of a class of 16 young men taking part in leadership training for the next four years.

The New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce Supported Employment Network Committee sponsored its annual public informational meeting on Social Security Work Incentives on June 14, 2016.

Ms. Thacker also presented valuable information about the ABLE, Act, Achieving a Better Life Experience, a new benefit that was signed into law by President Obama on December 19, 2014.

The presentation provided participants with handouts on Social Security Benefit Programs and their requirements and regulations. The presentation was held at the Wilks Library in New Bedford. Kim Thacker a Benefits Specialist from the Statewide Employment Services Department and Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission gave the informative presentation. Ms. Thacker explained to the audience how working sometimes affects Social Security Disability Benefits. To help the audience better understand the information, Ms. Thacker provided them with a useful packet about SSI and SSDI requirements and regulations.

Government Affairs Committee Update By Ian Abreu On Friday, June 10th the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee meeting featured Mike Foley of Foley & Foley, who offered his legal assessment of the S.B. - 2119 “Equal Pay” bill, which would require businesses to conduct audits, post salary ranges and maintain systems that ensures equal pay for women in the workplace.
