SouthCoast Businesses Nominated for 2017 APEX Awards

On April 13, 2017, three local organizations that have impacted our local economy and contributed to the betterment of the community will be honored at the prestigious APEX Business of the Year Award Luncheon. Each year, the Chamber and a committee of selected representatives from partnering companies collect nominees from business owners, employees and area residents who highlight a local business for demonstrating creativity and imagination in the development of their company while exhibiting growth and contributing to society in a positive, proactive manner.

The Chamber’s APEX Award is growing into one of the most esteemed honors to receive in the SouthCoast region. Out of dozens of nominations, the selection committee will have the daunting task of narrowing down the impressive list to a single large business, small business and a nonprofit/educational institution. Last year, the recipients of the APEX Business of the Year Award were Horacio’s, The Pasta House, and The YMCA of New Bedford. Over two hundred guests attended to help honor all the nominees, finalist and award recipients for their accomplishments and community contributions.

Chamber Update A Message from the President & CEO For most strong organizations, the only constant is change. We see change all around us, and the measure of any chamber of commerce is the ability not only to navigate change but to take the lead in positive change Rick Kidder, for our members and the comPresident & CEO munity. 2017 is already an exciting year for the New Bedford Area Chamber as we look to solidify and enhance our position as the leading organization in the SouthCoast helping businesses grow. Our constant has been change as we roll out new programs, reinvigorate events and build our programming for our members. We listen and we respond.

the same time! Keytags will be available at the show and from the Chamber office in May.

Perhaps nothing is more important to our members is to have their Chamber fighting for them in the halls of government. Every day when the legislature is in session a bill is introduced that may make it more or less easy to do business. Small businesses don’t have the time, the expertise or the ability to go to the State House and fight for what is right. Your Chamber does and can do so with the power of nearly 1,000 businesses behind them to be certain that your voice is heard. We are looking into some cutting edge communication systems to generate more emails to legislators on issues of importance and have begun a new dedicated e-newsletter, The Business Voice, to keep our members abreast of issues before the state and the region that make it easy for all of our members to weigh in for good public policy for business.

The largest and best Job Fair in the region will take place on April 20, with a new venue to accommodate more companies looking for a quality work force. Emerging In Health provides just that for their clients; a more holistic take on taking care of ourselves. Unlike traditional medicine, this homeopathic approach looks at not only the symptom of the problem but seeks to identify the cause of it. Homeopathy works to stimulate the body’s natural defense system in order to restore it to a healthier, balanced state – leaving your mind, body and spirit rejuvenated. With 200 years of knowledge put into practice, homeopathy continues to be used worldwide to aide acute and chronic illness. The World Health Organization states that there is an estimated 500 million users worldwide, making homeopathic remedies one of the leading holistic options in pain management. In many cases, homeopathy not only provides support for the afflictions listed above but also in favor of: • Addiction • Trauma • Eczema and Psoriasis • Asthma • Women’s Health • Concussion & Sport-like Injuries When asked what makes Emerging In Health the best at what they do, the company’s CEO’s Alix Lopes and Kristina White boldly reassure us “… Our consulting team is dedicated to supporting our clients in discovering their own ability to support oneself in health and wellness through homeopathy and other holistic options.” Emerging In Health is an active member in the SouthCoast community and part of the Health & Wellness initiative. Their goal is to educate the people of our community on the benefits of homeopathy and its ability to provide gentle yet powerful support at a modest price, all the while developing a close relationship with

clients in order for them to receive the utmost consideration in customized care. “Conventional medicine, healthy eating, homeopathy, yoga, massage and so many other holistic options working together is the optimal solution,” Kristina states. “It is a collaborative solution that recognizes each person as an individual with individual needs. Our goal is to educate people on the success our clients see with the use of homeopathy and other holistic solutions in support of their overall health and wellness.” Alix Lopes and Kristina White recognize the benefits of becoming active members in the community and have advocated to programs such as the SouthCoast Youth Court Program, Positive Action Against Chemical Addiction (PAACA), Southeast Family Services- Family Preservation Program (FPP), and the Dorchester Community Health Clinic. Aside from their active involvement in the community, Emerging In Health stresses the importance of keeping themselves educated and up-to-date in regards to all things homeopathic. They have received numerous certifications from schools all over the country, becoming certified in homeopathy techniques by the North American Society of Homeopaths (NASH), National Center for Homeopathy (NCH), Academy of Classical Homeopathy, Florida, Teleosis Homeopathic School, Newton MA., and by attendance of the Bowen Therapy Introductory Course of 2015. Chamber Welcomes Bristol Community College Student Intern

The New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce would like to welcome Bristol Community College student Brieanna Wood as the newest addition to the Chambers team as an intern for the spring semester! Brieanna is a Communications major in her last semester at the college and will be assisting the Chamber throughout the spring 2017 semester. With an 10

extensive background in customer service and management, Brieanna will be contributing her skills to help the Chamber in facilitating future events and daily procedures. Brieanna will be working with Chamber staff on a number of projects including the Annual Membership Directory, the Home, Health & Wellness Show and the Chamber’s newest program, Shop Local – Save Now!, a key tag program that will be available for purchase to receive discounts from local retailers. Rebecca Laliberte, Communications Manager at the Chamber says “We are excited to have Brieanna with us for her internship through BCC. She has already demonstrated a high level of professionalism. We hope to provide a valuable learning experience and help her develop skills she will utilize as she continues to pursue her education and career goals. ”

Brieanna is a 2014 New Bedford High School graduate, where she became interested in TV production and advertising during her junior year. With indecision pressing her and the urge to stay local pertinent, she decided to enroll at Bristol Community College until she could narrow down what direction she wanted to head in. “It’s the best decision I could have made for myself ” Brieanna states, “I have been able to provide for myself an affordable education that has allowed me to explore the different career options my major has to offer.” Brieanna will be graduating from BCC this June and is hopeful to continue working in her field of study. With an interest in all things PR, news writing and reporting, event coordinating and broadcasting she is enthusiastic about starting a career and eager to learn what it takes to work in the professions mentioned above.

Shop Local - Save Now!: A new program to help members grow their business

The New Bedford Area Chamber is thrilled to invite you to participate in our new Key Tag Program, Shop Local – Save Now! This program will help your business to connect with consumers within the community through specialized discounts or offers, redeemable only to those who have purchased the Shop Local – Save Now! Key Tag through the Chamber.

Calendar of Chamber Committee Meetings Contact the Chamber office for more information on any of these committees.

March

Government Affairs Committee Meeting - Friday, March 10th - 8:30 a.m. Board of Directors Meeting - Thursday, March 16th - 8:30 am

April

Government Affairs Committee Meeting - Friday, April 14th - 8:30 a.m.

May

Government Affairs Committee Meeting - Friday, May 12th - 8:30 a.m.

We ask that your business put forth a unique offer for Key Tag holders; one that is not currently available to the general public. Chambers throughout the United States have exhibited success in their own way through Key Tags, so we are hopeful Shop Local – Save Now! will encourage the SouthCoast community to shop local, eat local and be local! According to a study published in 2012, shopping at locally owned small businesses generates four times more economic impact if compared to the spending of money at chain retail stores. Similarly, the recirculation of revenue within the community is at a higher percentage compared to that of national chains. This means that with every dollar spent, a dollar is staying within our local communities. Along with money being retained in our area, shopping local can also aide in the creation of jobs, advance environmental

12

sustainability, diversify the local economy, support healthy communities and create vibrancy and prosperity for all. Participation in Shop Local – Save Now! means that your business will consent to a one year commitment with the program, from May 2017 to May 2018. All employees must be aware of the Key Tag Program and in compliance with it. The Chamber will supply your business with a notice of participation that must be hung in an area that is easily recognizable to consumers. Businesses must be members of the Chamber to offer a discount for the Shop Local - Save Now! program. For general inquisitions or more information on participation in this program, please contact Ian Abreu, Manager of Business Development & Public Policy at the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, at (508) 999-5231 ext. 24 or iabreu@ newbedfordchamber.com. Key tags will be available for purchase in May at the Greater New Bedford Home, Health & Wellness Show, at the Chamber office and online at www.newbedfordchamber.com.

The Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board Received Grants from State Agencies Intended to Spur Interest in Advanced Manufacturing and STEM Career Paths submitted by the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board In early January, the WIB received a $9067 grant from the Massachusetts Development Finance Agency administered through its Commonwealth Advanced Manufacturing Futures Program . WIB Executive Director, Jim Oliveira noted “This is the third grant in 4 years the WIB has competitively proposed that will heighten awareness of advanced manufacturing career paths.” In partnership with the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, The Greater New Bedford WIB will work with local veteran advocates to provide group visits to Greater New Bedford Vocational High School’s evening machining and metal working programs, and provide guidance counselors with externships within their schools’ metal 14

working and machining shops. The program aims to promote knowledge sharing about manufacturing, increase enrollments in school metal shops and training programs and educate schools about the needs of their regional labor market and area employers. Mr. Oliveira concluded “The WIB has noted a decisive uptick of jobs within the region of this nature that call for credentialed training. Making our students and local vets aware of these opportunities will hopefully contribute to decisions to pursue credentials that provide for a lucrative career path.” The WIB was also recently notified of another competitive grant awarded in the amount of $12,000 by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s

Connecting Activities Partnership. This award will provide valuable resources to develop career oriented activities for student populations traditionally underrepresented in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines. The grant opportunity required the WIB to reach out to Greater New Bedford Regional and Old Colony Regional Vocational High Schools to create programming and awareness of STEM career opportunities and how they applied in their respective schools. Each school will be hosting Career Fair events that will be assisted by the WIB’s Connecting Activities staff that operate from the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce offices. Old Colony will be kicking off its activities with the following signature event: Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High

School and the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board partner to welcome Dr. Temple Grandin to the Old Colony campus on Saturday, March 11th at 9 a.m. For more information, please visit http://bit.ly/2isRAyB. Dr. Temple Grandin, named one of TIME Magazine's 100 most influential people, is the most accomplished and well-known adult with autism in the world. Dr. Grandin has been featured on NPR (National Public Radio), ABC's Prime Time Live, The Today Show, Larry King Live, 48 Hours and 20/20. Dr. Grandin has been featured in Time magazine, People magazine, Forbes, U.S. News and World Report, and The New York Times.
